Wright's Saddest Truth Overlooked

Everyone has noted and commented upon some of Reverend Wright's worst, most recent rhetoric. Even Sullivan has seen enough. I may have missed it being dealt with directly, as it should be - but the saddest and perhaps most revealing truth of all for Wright and likely some in the Black community is buried within it. It's the last portion of this phrase.

"Louis Farrakhan is not my enemy. He did not put me in chains, he did not put me in slavery, and he didn't make me this color."

Think about what that really means. Those aren't the words of a proud Black individual. They are the words of someone who is angry, primarily, ... because they are Black. They are the words of a racist - of the anti-Black variety; of someone who has come to view the Black race as inferior somehow.

Has Wright internalized White racism so deeply? Perhaps that explains his recent real estate choice, to retire in a gated, predominately White community.

I realize it may sound absurd and certainly isn't politically correct to point it out. But words mean things, as they say. And Wright's own words are revealing of a personal psychology as troubled as any of Obama's current political woes.

Jeremiah Wright simply doesn't like Black people. Why else would he be looking for someone to blame, or holding a grudge simply because he is Black?

What a shame Wright has apparently never come to face his own truth. Perhaps his ministry would have been that much more effective had he focused his career on truly lifting up other Black individuals who feel the same way, as opposed to looking for someone to blame for what amounts to an act of God, or genes, however you want to slice it.

When I heard him say this the first time I thought maybe something was edited...after hearing it in entirety several times...he revealed the big issue in the black community...they believe that being black is a bad thing..that they have been cursed or punished by god...

It is clear why black in America are their own worst enemy...

JOM

And they don't write goods either...

dat am be da trut~

I think you misinterpreted that remark Dan. Wright was speaking to a predominately black audience. I watched the whole sppech and heard that remark. I think he meant Louis Farrakhan did not make him light colored. In other words he was damning his white blood. He wishes he were blacker in skin color. After all who made him the color he is? Obviously some white people and some black people. And as light as he is he looks to me more white than black. Half blacks and half whites have always have had a hard time since they do not belong fully to either the black race or the white race. They are put down by both races. Now I know this is changing. But Wright is an angry old black/white man. Which ever it is you have to consider that some mixed race black man might hate his white skin and blood as much or even more than his black skin and blood. I truly believe that a racist such as Wright would not put down his skin color in front of a black audience unless he was referring to how light his skin color is. Ask around among some blacks and see how they interpreted that remark.

I understand the point, Joeb. But what about him referencing Farrakhan in the same bit. Screwy Louie isn't exactly dark? I guess he'd have to clarify it.

The fact is, I wonder if this isn't all a charade, with Obama playing along. I think Obama may have known what Wright was going to say and they are going to use it to make Obama look like a victim of both Wright and a judgmental media and audience, while diverting attention from his lack of qualifications.

Given how close they are, I don't buy that Wright is acting out on his own. These aren't dumb people. And I can't believe he wants to hurt Obama's chances. Wright may be a man of conviction, no matter how misguided - and this was the only way they could play it.

What's next? That Ayres fellow bombing a post office?

See Yahoo story on Obama's reaction to yesterday's speech by Wright. I personally think this is a clever attempt by the two of them to try and resolve the "Wright problem" since Obama is doing so badly now and it is getting worse. Here is how I figure it went down before Detroit. Wright tells Obama I will go and make some really outrageous speeches and make myself look more and more foolish and then you can denounce me in no uncertain terms. Maybe that will help you in Indiana and North Carolina. In other words Wright and Obama realize Obama is doomed unless he and Wright make a public split. Which they are trying to do. I am not buying it one bit. I think it is a clever political PR move that won't work.

There's an old saying among black folks; crabs in a bucket. You can google to get a sanitized internet translation, but it simply means that in escaping poverty and ghettoization, their own worst enemy is often their own people. Just as crabs hold each other fast with their claws and prevent escape, Wright is furious that Obama has to repudiate him.

Wright is such a racist, that his racism is so all inclusive as to include black people, as well as white people. In fact, Wright is actually a white man who hates black people, AND a black man who hates white people. And Jews of course. This proves that Obama is also a black/white man who hates white/black people - just like that Star Trek episode. Only not in space. He's also a stealth Muslim atheist, AND an elitist who hates working class peopl, as evidenced by his not ordering a cheese stake from shitty rube trap in Philly, but instead ordering a ham sammich - which of course proves that he is trying to convince white America (which is pure) that he is not in fact a stealth Muslim.

The devious bastard.

April 29, 2008 --

Barack Obama made a call for nonviolence in the aftermath of the Sean Bell verdict - infuriating the Rev. Al Sharpton, who accused the presidential candidate of trying to "grandstand in front of white people," sources told The Post. http://www.nypost.com/seven/04292008/news/regionalnews/sharpton_raps_obama_108577.htm

I don't know what to make of Wright and Sharpton re Obama. Sharpton stands to lose a lot of support if race relations are seen to improve with Obama as Pres. - btw the Jaguar he was driving was towed for non-payment of $900.00 in tickets - can't say it was his as he doesn't own anything, not even his suits, or so he says.

Obama could lose New York if he is seen as being in bed with Sharpton, many people have not forgotten Tawana Brawley.

Wright could cause the loss of the Jewish and Catholic votes.

Personally, I think Rev. Wright hates not only white people and black people, but all of humanity. He fed the homeless for 30 years - why not all the other hungry people on the planet? He served six years in the military - why didn't he jump on a grenade? He was the cardiopulmonary technician when Lyndon Johnson was under the knife - what about all the other people undergoing surgery on that day?

These are troubling questions.

Yes, I caught that too... "'He' didn't make me this color". At the end of the day, this vitriol is all about nursing a collective inferiority complex. Period.

Not a justified inferiority - because Blacks are absolutely NOT inferior to anyone!

Perpetuating this rage and division is not healthy for progress and unity. We need to get passed the evils of the past and move forward in love and forgiveness.

Why can't Wright see that he's playing into a "stereotype" and ironically, hindering the chances for the first real Black contender for the White House?

Bottomline: Wright is all about advancing HIMSELF and not the African-American community he claims to be ministering to!

Can you imagine if, when JFK was becoming the heir apparant for the White House run:

Some old, loud Irish drunk got up and started railing about the wicked English in America and "the Irish troubles", how being a Catholic brick-layer was the only noble profession for a Catholic with a wife and 20 children - 'twas the Irishmen's lot in this old potato-famined world... Down with America and all the Paddys who'd given up dishwashing to become lawyers and doctors!

The Kennedys would have locked him up in the basement! This is about rising above your lot and raising your kinsmen with you!!

IT'S NOT WHERE YOU START, IT'S WHERE YOU FINISH - AND WE'RE GONNA FINISH ON TOP!!!!!!!!!

Wherever there is a black racist spouting off his hate, you can depend on a liberal white lackey to be there to provide cover. scar is the Reverend's lapdog. Yip..yip..yipping and yapping in an effort to change the subject. You're wasting your time here, lapdog. You need to go to dKos, where your nutroot brothers are even asking for the Messiah to repudiate his pastor. I'm laughing my ass off at the spectacle.

"he didn't make me this color" jumped right out at me also. first thing i thought was, uh oh, he doesn't like being black. he's not a proud black man, of course, he's not proud of anything.

Wright and Hussein O are black by choice, not necessarily by birth. Hussein O's name is Hussein by choice. I guess the choice was to be part of the 'poor ole pity me' race.

Obama and Wright share that same problem of being mixed race men in a country that says one drop of black blood makes a man black. In other countries, they would be able to take pride in both halves of their racial identity. They do not feel that they can do that here because they view white Americans as having rejected them. Obama and Wright want to belong to white America; they can't. Thus, they hate whites (see Obama's book; listen to his comment about "typical white person."). They don't much respect blacks either, so they are uneasy children of no world.

I'm wondering if any of you actually knows any black people.

From Glen Greenwald at Salon.

And Dan, you ever here of the saying if your not part of the solution you're part of the problem"

"Why the Jeremiah Wright story deserves more attention"

"I think the most important thing to note about the Jeremiah Wright Story is that we're a Nation plagued by exceedingly few significant problems; blessed with a quite healthy political culture and very trusted political and media institutions; composed of a citizenry that is peacefully content with its Government and secure and confident about their future; endowed with a supremely sturdy economic foundation free of debt and other grave economic afflictions; vested with the ability to command great respect and admiration from the other nations of the world; emancipated from the burdens of war and intractable conflicts which have toppled and destroyed so many other great nations of the past; and, most of all, we're becoming freer and more prosperous by the minute.

Not only that, but we have an extremely impressive, serious and honor-bound ruling imperial class devoted to the preservation of all of these blessings.

So it isn't as though we really have anything else to talk about besides Jeremiah Wright. There are some countries in the world -- probably most -- which have so many big problems that they could ill-afford to devote much time and energy to a matter of this sort. Thankfully, the United States isn't one of them. I believe it's critical that we keep that in mind as we discuss him for the next seven months."

"if any of you actually knows any black people"

Well, let's see. I lived next door to a black family for ten years or so in a duplex as a boy within a working class neighborhood. Does that count? Last year I went back and took pictures of my house, including the black family living in it now.

We often played pick-up sports games - Black versus white - in one local field growing up since we both hung there. And I remember my first fist fight with a black friend in my class growing up ... 5th grade, I think. One of us ripped the knee in our pants wrestling around and it got serious. But we remained friends until after high school.

Does any of that count?

Oh, and after some friends took someone else's side in another fight I had, another Black friend had to explain it to me when I questioned it. See, the kids were black. He said, when it all breaks down, you have to remember, there's you, and then there's us. Black will always back black and vice versa.

But I don't believe that's always the case, though it is certainly a reality in many circles still today.

That line jimped out at me and I realized just how full of hate Wright is. He hates blacks and whites, he hates himself. As a mostly white guy playing a black guy Wright has to do a Kubuki act of his own. That was part of the act.

jumped

Willie,
I'm related to blacks through inter-racial marriages. Also, I worked for an international airline which employed every ethnic group so I have lots of friends and acquaintances of all colors. The best funeral I ever went to was for my black Baptist friend, they sung him to Heaven. My daughter's best friend in grammar school was a black girl. However, in high school they parted. The blacks sat in their corner, the Spanish in their corner, the whites in their corner. That's how it is.

"See, the kids were black. He said, when it all breaks down, you have to remember, there's you, and then there's us."

Dan & lala: That is exactly what I meant by my post. Being aquainted with and "knowing" black folk are quite different because there are things your aquaintances wont tell you. It seems here that some people dont know that mixed race folk like Obie are outcasts to racists on both sides. Mr Wright looks more Italian than SS African. A friend recently told me that though there are white people "they" would do anything for, in general they all hate whitey.

Fascinating. Rednecks offering racial commentary. Stick to nascar and troop-supporting, patriots - it suits you better!

Again, congratulations on the SURGE - it's WORKING!!!

One of my black friends told me that they cheered when the last white family moved out of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn years ago. She didn't pull any punches when talking about race and neither did I. Another black friend, who married a white guy and had two children, had to move out of the interracial neighborhood she was living in in the Bronx because her children, who looked white, were being threatened.

I found the American born blacks to be much more resentful of whites than the foreign born.

On a side note, last night on the news they were showing the foreclosures in Stamford.

Re. Wright: "Louis Farrakhan is not my enemy. He did not put me in chains, he did not put me in slavery, and he didn't make me this color."

Quote: "Think about what that really means. Those aren't the words of a proud Black individual. They are the words of someone who is angry, primarily, ... because they are Black. The above is a link to the New York Daily News article about the trial of the 3 cops who shot Sean Bell. Rev. Al Sharpton is threatening to close down New York City because of the verdict. The News allows comments on their articles and, as of today, there are over 3000, probably a record.

"Rev. Al Sharpton is threatening to close down New York City because of the verdict."

I assume this was in the 'SOUTH' Bronx? Fifty shots?

Willy,
No, it was in Jamaica, a section of Queens, yes, it was "50 shots". Actually, the So. Bronx is getting better. It doesn't look like a bombed-out WWII city anymore.

Thanx Lala, Actually I was being snide because everyone knows racism/injustice only exists in the south. IE South Bronx, Southsdide Chicago, South Central LA, South Boston............

I visited a fire station (Engine 82) in the Bronx back in the 70s....sweet mother!

"Rev. Al Sharpton is threatening to close down NYC..."

Wow, I didn't know that guy had that kind of power. He's bigger than King George. What's a NYC liberal to do?

http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=1&aid=81052

Sharpton is planning on closing the George Washington Bridge. Most New Yorkers won't mind, they hate New Jersey drivers.

Willy,
My husband was a fireman in the South Bronx when it was burning down. His company did 5000 runs a year. At times they had to be accompanied by the police as they were being shot at from the rooftops.

The book that was written, wasn't it Report from Engine Co. 82? Were you there because of the book?

"The book that was written, wasn't it Report from Engine Co. 82? Were you there because of the book?"

Yes, I had read the book and since I was in the city for a few days we went to visit the station. At the time I had a habit of visiting local houses whenever I could and comparing notes with brother fire fighters. T'was an eye opener, not nearly as impressive as I imagined and I was happy to leave it behind me.

"-- Sharpton is planning on closing the George Washington Bridge. Most New Yorkers won't mind, they hate New Jersey drivers. --"

Heh. Funny cause its true.

"-- Is that why young black punks disdain nicer looking, far worthier, black women, to shack-up with fat, plain-looking, slothful, drug addicted (is always convenient to have the "pusher" at home) trailer-trash white "biaches" (so inbred that they have an instinctive compulsion to go panting after anything black to expand their stagnant gene pools) that they can parade as sorry-assed "trophies," like the latest pair on Nikes, only to breed more mongrel
"Obamas" with them??? --"

Yup. It's those black people who are always taking cheap shots at white strawmen and acting so crazy.

Really, I lost faith in the "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" meme about junior year in college after they'd finished deregulating tuition and started jacking up tuition rates as fast as physically possible. Then the price of gas shot up. Now the price of food is spiking. You can only get financially raped by "the man" for so long before you get the feeling that the system is out to screw you.

People bitched and moaned about big mean old government regulation in the 80s. Then they deregulated the Savings And Loan industry and less than a decade later it crashed. People whined and complained about all those high, high taxes. So Bush gave us a slew of tax cuts. Six years later the economy is in recession and wages are completely stagnant. No "trickle down" in sight.

Then a black guy runs for President and the only thing any TV station can cover is how "angry" his preacher is and how "unpatriotic" a missing lapel pin makes you. No one is talking about taxes or deregulation anymore. No one wants to discuss Iraq War policy or Universal Medicare. Policy positions are off the table because the people have spoken and the media knows these are issues their wingnut patrons are going to lose.

Better to run 24/7 hit jobs on Obama from now till November.

And, lest we all forget, Pastor Hagee much? If we're going to start waving religious affiliates around as permission to blackball candidates, everyone on these boards should be voting for Hillary Clinton. McCain's closet homophobic anti-Catholic psycho preacher is no more saintly than Obama's Friend of Farahkan.

So while the GOP lines up behind Mr Magoo - the foreign policy expert who can't distinguish Sunni from Shi'ite and self-admittedly doesn't know economics from the back of his hand during an economic crisis - the rest of America watches in horror at the train wreck of media coverage that insists on talking about everything except what we care about.

"Pastor Hagee much?"

Show me which 20 years McCain spent in Hagee's church and which marriage Hagee performed and which of McCain's children Hagee baptized and then you'll have a valid comparison.

Hagee endorsed McCain. He was never an advisor of any sort.

Apples and oranges much?

Anyone ever heard of Father Michael Pfleger?

Obama is "counseling" with him now.

Seems the first one wasn't enough nutty to teach him a lesson.

Heh. Pass the popcorn please.

Bonus question for JustOneMan:

Who said "I seek daily to imitate his faith"?

Oh, we can definitely play the "Apples and Oranges" game. That Obama sat through 20 years of sermons and didn't bail off a two-second video clip is forgivable. I can go and listen to Joel Olsteen every day for a year, and I'm sure you'll find something he said that will put your knickers in a twist. But, you know, Olsteen is white so we hold him to a different standard.

McCain, however, got to play the 11th hour conversion game. He actively sought out Hagee's endorsement when he was perfectly free to shop around. Like Bush before him, he'll make the long walk to Bob Jones University once he's done kissing the dead hand of Jerry Falwell and making a donation to the 700 club.

McCain gets to play fair-weather friend to the evangelicals today after he hung them out to dry in 2000. And he's not doing it because he suddenly became a Southern Baptist. McCain is playing this up because he desperately needs the Hagee Church and Liberty University and Bob Jones and Pat Robertson to channel him the millions of dollars necessary to run a campaign.

Obama sat in his pew every Sunday because he was actually attending Church. McCain is pandering to the psycho sect of the religious right wing because he's maxed out his credit cards and needs access to Jesus's ATM.

"Apples to Oranges" indeed.

I wish! The black guy would have done me a favor... running away with my wife! But, as to my assertions, just open your eyes and look around you...that is unless you live in the Ozarks.

I almost fell over when I heard him say it. But my first, and continuing, thought is still this, "Yes, this explains his irrational hatred of man. What he cannot bring himself to do is reveal, even to himself, whom it is he really hates. It's not Whitey, or Jews, or America. They're just receiving the displaced anger he has for the one who 'made him this color:' God."

Wright is not just a preacher, but the son of a preacher. Well-versed in scripture, he knows God created him. And he cannot hate Him. But this does give new meaning to scripture: "If you hate any man, you hate Me."

Lulz. Ah, Believer, I'm betting you pulled that off a Focus On the Family newsletter, didn't you?

Ah! Quick! A gayz! Run for it!

But seriously, that was some awesome projection right there.

Quote: "Yes, this explains his irrational hatred of man. What he cannot bring himself to do is reveal, even to himself, whom it is he really hates. It's not Whitey, or Jews, or America. They're just receiving the displaced anger he has for the one who 'made him this color:' God."

I think you are abosolutely right, Believer, and that Rev. Wright is angry at society, the world, and God, because what he hates the most in this world is "himself" - being "black"!

Unfortunately this inferiority complex is actually more prevalent amongst black people than it can be imagined. Look at once wildly successful Michael Jackson transforming himself from a snob-nosed nappy-haired boy into an almost
"Nordic" woman. Or, as I previously pointed out, how it seems young black punks must "prove" themselves by parading around inbred white women, no matter how fat, slothful, homely-looking, or disgusting they may be. Or how so many blacks seem to be so pathologically rabidly "proud" of their "blackness" that it most likely belies their inner insecurity and the fact they are overcompensating for their subconscious inward feelings of shame and inferiority.

It seems you can take the American negro out of slavery but you can't take the "slavery" out of the American negro. It's a shame that after over one hundred and fifty years they still wallow in it and poison young generations of blacks with their racial trauma and their eternal resentment of "niggerhood victimhood"!

Not me. Perhaps it's because I had this crazy idea early on not to follow BLACK POWER.

I never hated white people; I saw no sense in it. All it does is strip the black--or any color--individual of the power to control their own life.

I'm not disgusted with being African-American, because I don't identify myself that way. I have a name and a personality, and I'm a United States citizen. There are precious few places on Earth with comparable opportunities than the United States, and I'm thankful everyday that I was born--to a single mother--in this country.

Ultimately, I am the only person I have any control over. I can't control how a white person feels about me one way or the other. I can't control how a black person feels about me one way or the other; a Hispanic person feels... an Asian person feels.... You get the picture.

CHANGE--real change--begins with oneself. It takes a bit of responsibility and self-inventory--along with HARD WORK and SACRIFICE--but it can be done.

These are a couple of guidelines. This is what I'd say to Jerry Wright(who is NOT a reverend).

1. Be happy! Find something in life that makes you happy. For me, it's writing stories and watching cartoons from here and Japan. Joy is power--nothing can hurt a happy, joyful heart for long.

2. Don't hate the player. Don't hate the game. Play the game. Learn the systems of life and understand them. Figure out how they work.

3. You are not the center of the universe. Earth--the planet we inhabit--isn't even the center of the solar system, let alone the galaxy or the universe. So cease with the insistence that God/the country/white people/the world must STOP to address your puny grievances.

4. Count your blessings. There are days that suck, but keep in mind that it could ALWAYS be worse. Always. You could be black in Saudi Arabia instead of the US--and you would not be treated well. ABDUL means black, but it also means slave. I am not a slave--because of a bloody war fought long before I was born--and (the REAL God willing) I will never be a slave.

5. I hear there's plenty of space in Cuba, if America merits damnation.

= = =

It would take too long to air out my issues. My country is flawed. But then, my family is flawed. I am flawed. To be flawed is to be human.

Should I cease loving my family because of their flaws? No. I feel the same way about my home, the United States. I live here, and I want my home to stay in one piece.

My brother wants me to vote for Obama. I would like a black American to be president--I'm not anymore immune to that than he is. But Obama is not the one. We've waited this long; we can hold out for a better candidate.

Now that's...HOPE. :)

anubis soundwave:

I hope you find a way to share your thoughts with as many as you can - both black and white. You have a maturity and wisdom so many young people, especially, need to hear. Not just Jeremiah Wright.

Yes, it is sad that, with all the promise he offered, "Obama is not the one." My hope is that this controversy will spark a soul-searching for both Wright and Obama. I hope their friendship is not destroyed.

I have a sense Wright fell away from the faith of his own father, and he's been lost for some time now. But like the prodigal son, I hope he returns home. And introduces Obama to real Truth. The Truth that unites every man, one to the other.

It would be wonderful for all of us if we saw two men return to the national stage - hearts changed - showing far greater wisdom and judgment.

And then, I feel certain, we'd be comfortable allowing one to lead our nation.

Re "Louis Farrakhan is not my enemy. He did not put me in chains, he did not put me in slavery, and he didn't make me this color."
Rev Wright has an interesting way of making himself representative of all black people. He feels that attacks on him equal attacks on the black church ie he IS the black church.(wow) He also appears to feel he represents all who were in chains and all who were in slavery.I have to assume this since he has personally been neither in slavery nor chains. As to his color; he appears to be fairly light complected which indicates to me he comes from a mixed ancestry. Possibly he resents that fact. He may feel that abuses by some of his white ancestors were the cause of his complexion which he resents. Or, true to form he may feel he represents all those who God chose to bless with that particular shade. In any case this man has a mega ego. He also appears unable to justify his own resentments by calling up actual events in his own life experience; prefering to call up historical abuses of the past which occured between the white and black races in America. It is always interesting to observe self proclaimed representatives of a particular group; self proclaimed advocates of those who can most likely do far better without the advocacy. I will give Rev Wright this much. In his on lunatic way he is more honest than Obama and more consistent.

Dear Believer,
Re the last sentence of your post:
When pigs fly.

Dear Totally Heterosexual Conservative,
You are on to something.
I am reminded of Dave Chapel and his blind black, white supremacist.
I reguarded that bit as the most original joke I had heard in a long time.
