Bailing out failing businesses with taxpayer money is a recipe for continued failure... Bear Stearns should have gone the way of the Dodo Bird, along with the investors who didn't see the writing on the wall in time enough to liquidate or diversify their holdings.
If (individual) welfare is bad enough, corporate welfare is an atrocity far, far worse.
