The background is a new Politico item - keep that in perspective and take a look at what I found below.

In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district’s influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

While Ayers and Dohrn may be thought of in Hyde Park as local activists, they’re better known nationally as two of the most notorious – and unrepentant — figures from the violent fringe of the 1960s anti-war movement.

Did Obama really require much of an introduction to the unapologetic terrorist: screen cap from page 81 of Ayre's 1998 book? The liberal's new political messiah may have had some pretty interesting friends. Why was Ayres calling Obama a "writer" in 1998? Or was this written at an earlier time, with their friendship going back to before Obama entered politics? Neither man is commenting on the relationship. Hmm.

Barack Obama is a hardcore leftist, so his thinking nothing of hanging out with Ayers should not be a shocker, (but of course it is to any reasonable person)--remember his voting record is the most liberal in the Senate, and also was in Illinois. He is a product of Chicago and Crook county, not to mention Illinois, which rivals New Jersey in corruption. He has associated with shady Dem money men as well--Tony Rezko.

This contrasts with his sanitized happy talk and holier than thou message.

Illinois is essentially a one-party Dem machine state, so once he won a Dem primary he has had no serious opposition in a general election.

As the clueless MSM and Dems are finding out now, he has not been vetted from the Right, (or even the center for that matter), as being a liberal is no cause for concern by the Dems.

Welllllll.... for the better part of a half-century, Germany *was* an occupied nation. Although I'll agree that being a bilingual citizen is a boon to that person and enables him to do business in the "lingua mundi", that is, the world language, which in this era happens to be English.

That, and size and proximity of European nations to each other make it a necessity, if not convenient, for Europeans to learn one or more other languages in addition to English as the "lingua mundi".

Contrast this with America's situation for most of its life, we have lived on a land mass nearly the size of the European continent. And we spoke English - there was no need to make it an "official" language, since it was a matter of fact that all business and day-to-day affairs and conversation was in English.

And, we have seen immigrants from all over the world learn English in order to make a success of themselves in the USA... Italians, Germans, Frenchmen, Croats, Swedes, Dutchmen, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Laotians, Russians, Lithuanians, Far East Indians, and oh so many more have all become Americans, speaking our common language.

Now, if we insist that we become a *bilingual nation*, we will find that this can become a curse, as we then encourage ethnic enclaves to never fully assimilate to mainstream American culture.

Now, I'll touch on the foolishness of your other statements (teaching basic bio and meteorology) later, but I'll only say that science need not exclude God. In fact, I believe that Science more often than not can point to God.

My point is not about official languages... but rather, assimilation and the willingness of foreigners to do so.

It is the fact that within the 3,794,066 sq. mi. (9,826,630 km²) that makes up the united States of America.

Contrast that with Europe (including Russia west of the Urals) which has an area of 3,930,000 sq. mi. (10,180,000 km²) that is a difference of about 353,000km² - the US being 96% of the land mass of Europe, and about half of the population, being more culturally homogenous than the 20-odd separate, culturally, and linguistically distinct nations in Europe.

Now you mentioned CA and TX (and for that matter, you can include NM, CO, AZ, and NY and NJ to your list with substantial Latino populations.

But the thing is, they, being foreigners desiring to do business and even gain citizenship here, should be the ones learning our language.

It is the same expectation that I'd have if I went to live in Japan: I could probably get by with only English, but I really would never integrate into Japanese society until I learned how to read, write, and otherwise live in Japanese.

For that matter, we are among the most welcoming of nations concerning immigration. Try moving to Japan as a foreigner - where you will be first and always be thought of as a "Gaijin" 外人 (lit. "outside person") and if you are well mannered or in the company of gracious hosts, a "Gaikokujin" 外国人 (lit. "outside country person"). And that is even if you speak the language with native fluency.

Even multi-generational families that emigrated from China and Korea, who superficially look much more like Japanese than a European, a typical North American or African do face prejudices from many Japanese and as such, some Korean and Chinese emigrants take pains to conceal their lands of origin by taking Japanese surnames and striving hard to attain a Japanese accent.

For us, you could be any color in the rainbow, and legally become a resident and a citizen, if you go through the process. And what is more is, if you learn the language, we will (mostly) receive you graciously, if you have committed yourself to playing nicely with others.

In other words, our ire is not about Mexicans wanting to come to live and work in the USA.

It is about foreigners who come here, refuse to learn our language, and refuse to participate in our culture, but demand that we acknowledge theirs as some sacred cow that must never be questioned or touched.

For an individual to learn a second language is admirable and the mark of education; for a society that is compelled to sign everything in a foreign language and to learn it when there really isn't a need to, is a sign of a conquered nation.

This post is taken completely out of context. The South Side of Chicago has many neighborhoods, and you can turn from great to terrible in such a short distance as two blocks. Hyde park is now hailed as one of the city's jewels, a neighborhood where racial integration is the norm and people look out for one another. As a married, upper-middle class white woman, I can attest that I would live in Hyde Park any day; and that you cannot always choose every neighbor when you live in a city of 8 million people. I think you do a great job of finding the real story most of the time, but this is certainly not one of them. This is not news. Frankly, this post smacks of sleezy reporting and is just dumb. I live in a high-rise in Chicago and do not even know all of the people who live on my floor...and yet you expect or report that Obama is affiliated with everyone with whom he shares a zip code all the while assuming that the entire South Side of Chicago is wasteland slum.

Dan, is it just me, or do we need to have reading comprehension classes? I did not get the same impression of your story that Jessica did. The little quote at the end of your post highlighted Barack being described as a writer, rather than some sleezy jab at the neighborhood he lived in.

IMO, the subject of the post was Barack's obvious ties to 1960s era radicals who were involved in crimes against these United States. Maybe I missed something.

The fact that this guy identifies Obama only as a "writer" in 1998 indicates to me that he wasn't clued in on Obama's professional moves which would be an indication that he just "knew of" Obama rather than "knew" him --- probably not really as close to any of the people he names as he lets on. While Obama may have been "known of" by Ayers, in 1995, this would be before even his IL state senate run.
