As it's been the subject of debate recently, this is an additional important factor thus far missed in any analysis of the Evangelical vote - via the NYT's.
Dr. Guth noted that Mr. Huckabee appeared to excel mainly in the counties with the highest concentrations of Southern Baptists, many familiar with his career from church publications. Mr. Huckabee fared less well in counties with more diverse groups of evangelicals. Exit polls showed that he received only about a third of the vote of born-again Christians across the country — roughly on par with Mr. McCain and Mr. Romney.

Ain't it cool when everyone else figures out what most people already know?

HAVE YOU HEARD THE LATEST SUGGESTION?
This is RICH. Imagine that Romney approaches Huckabee and says:
"Listen, the Conservatives of America are NOT backing John McCain and if he is nominated, we will lose in November. There is also LITTLE chance that he will actually name you as his VP. McCain has been in Washington for 30 years and owes a lot of people a lot of favors.
So what we do is that both you and I run all the way to the Convention. We stop attacking one another and just run the best campaigns we can on our ideas. Then at the Convention, whoever has the lead in Delegates, throws all their support to the other and that person wins the nomination.
Let's announce our plan at CPAC and state that our intention is to save the Conservative Movement of the Republican Party."
Lol, can you just imagine!? McCain would blow a sprocket. He would have NO CHANCE against a combines Romney and Huckabee effort. You want to see him in a red-faced rage? That would be it.
I would like to vote for Romney. I could hold my nose and vote for Huckabee. I will NEVER vote for McCain.

I tried to get Dan behind this idea yesterday, Bill. Terry Gain suggested it day before yesterday, and I suggested Dan run with it. Romney/Huckabee would hold the South, make inroads in parts of the North, win the West(other than the coast), and would be competitive in the states that will decide this election, i.e. Arizona, Ohio, Missouri and Florida. It's a great idea. It would give the establishment Repubs a heart attack.
