Why is McCain losing so badly when it comes to fund raising? Well, he doesn't at all inspire the Republican base. And I think one reason for that is how he has abused them over the years to bolster his image with the media. Using others like that is a sign of low character and now McCain has done it, again.
I'll happily concede that radio talker Bill Cunningham using Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event is the wrong thing to do. I have no problem with that tactical judgment. But think objectively on what really happened in the case of McCain's recent event.
Cunningham did the same shtick he always does. Without some special instructions, that is precisely what he would be expected to do under the circumstances. Someone supporting McCain by organizing the event was looking to get a little mileage by trading on Cunningham's local celebrity - whether it's your cup of tea, or not, doesn't matter.
Assuming he wasn't paid, but even if he were, Cunningham did a favor for McCain and was promptly humiliated publically for it. There's no honor at all in what John McCain did.
If he wanted to act honorably, he should have apologized to both Cunningham and Obama - Cunningham for having put him in the position his campaign did, given McCain didn't appreciate the Hussein comments. But McCain didn't do that.
He tossed Cunningham under the Straight Talk Express and never really took responsibility for creating the entire incident in the first place. That isn't character, it's shameful self-promotion, or ignorance, at best. And it's the same thing the Right has been seeing from McCain for years. So, any notion that it was some kind of Sister Souljah moment for McCain is simply too dumb for words. McCain doesn't need a moment to alienate Right wing talk, or grass roots conservatives. That notion is simply absurd.
Ultimately, the incident was just one more reason for conservatives to let McCain twist in the wind come election day and an additional sign of the poor character that makes him unfit to be President.

Perhaps it is a matter of tactlessness on Cunningham's part. Frankly though, I see no problem with the fact he used a middle name (however unconventional).
But there is a difference that can be conveyed in his intonation:
"Barrack Hussein Obama" is the man's full, proper name. There should be no particular evil in uttering it. And as far as I can tell, he spoke it in pretty much an even tone.
But the media has spun it so that it was as if he had said:
"Barrack... Husss-SEINNN.... (dramatic pause) ... Obama." If in fact he had said it in this manner, then I could see how the charges of saying a man's name can freight it with all sorts of nastiness and vitriol.
And McCain for his part... is a fool for being so quick to toss Cunningham under the bus.
He has no reason not to hammer home every inch and micrometer he gets against the Dhimmicrats... but now he himself is showing signs of being Dhimmified.
