h/t Instapundit for linking Mark Tapscott's reaction to George Will discussing supporting John McCain. As with many conservatives, Mark's biggest struggle seems to be around "What will McCain do if he takes office?"
I feel the very same thing on a host of issues. While reading Mark's post it occurred to me, I wouldn't loan my car to someone if I had no idea how, or where they were going to drive it. And that concept is a fundamental problem for me when considering voting for McCain to assume the highest office in the land, firmly reinforced by a second deeply troubling issue.
I know how Democrats act. I also know that the only way to fight them is by electing strong conservative leadership to the legislature. Between his defacto controlling the flow of RNC cash and support as President - and the concept of "Party Loyalty" to which DC politicians always fold, more or less, how is it one is supposed to fight a John McCain, if and when he starts governing like a Democrat? Short answer, you can't.
A McCain presidency could very possibly lead to conservatives not having any truly effective voice in government for four years, if not longer. And here I thought conservatives opposed euthanasia.
Perhaps I was wrong.

Dan,
So why don't you start campaigning for the Democrats now?
There are few things I can think of that are as quaint as people who ran around four years ago saying that the Democrats were borderline traitors on the war, but are practically giggling with glee over the idea of handing the military over to Hillary or Obama.
America is at war. Period. If that isn't the only issue you're thinking about, then there's something wrong with your prorities.
Ever since the Democrats won Congress, conservatives have been saying that anything less that full-throated support for the troops is a betryal. How is giving the White House to the same party who would withdraw them in disgrace any less of a betrayal?
I hate to cite Mitt Romney as a source because I loathe him so much, but he was right in his withdrawl speech. This isn't '76, where you can just take your ball and go home, damn the consequences.
"Supporting the troops" cuts both ways, Dan. You can't use it against Democrats and then turn around and abandon the issue because you're pissed about the BCRA and immigration. If nothing else, at least the Democrats are honest about what they're going to do.
If you believe that Democrats are soft on terror, then you should do everything in your power to stop them. If you don't, then you're even worse than they are. You would be a political opportunist during a time of war, secretly hoping for defeat so that it can be used for political advantage.
What's more important, the War on Terror or an already defeated imigration bill?

The war in Iraq is important to our national security. But to pretend other significant issues do not threaten to destroy America is ludicrous. The outcry by the Hillaryphobia" crowd has begun in earnest. We have to elect McCain or the war is lost.Bull-we have to elect conservatives to the House and Senate to insure the war is won,and Juan McCain's plan to reward illegal aliens with citizenship is never passed.I will work as hard as I always do to elect conservatives.I will also work hard to mobilize other conservatives not to vote for a man who has voted against conservatives on all the other significant issues that threaten to destroy us!I'm sure all the Republican first, conservative second crowd will join the political hacks in supporting Juan. But those of us who write-in the name of a real conservative will be laughing our butts off as Juan seethes in anger when we destroy his political career.I think it is interesting that you pseudo-conservatives expend more energy attacking conservatives than you ever did attacking the liberal McCain. But then again,McCain has made a career of attacking Republicans far more tha his liberal pals-Kennedy,Feingold,Lieberman,and Edwards!

While I would have to agree with you Skippy Stalin, at least on the issue of supporting the troops; at what point does it become self-defeating? If our borders are opened up and we lose national sovereignty, what will those troops come home to? If the known instances of middle-eastern terrorists crossing the Southern Border are to be believed, what about all of the ones we do not know about? How many dangers have been allowed to openly cross the border that basically has no defense at all? Will John McCain seek Juan Hernandez approval before he selects Justices for the Supreme Court or will he do a Jumpin' Jim across the aisle as he has so many times with the likes of Kennedy and Feingold in an effort to destroy the basis for this Constitutional Republic and Nation of Law? What route will McCain take with the Security and Prosperity Partnership that until recently, openly posted on its web site a braggart's portfolio of "accomplishments" it had made without the approval, consent or for the most part, even the knowledge of the American People? The question does not become one of supporting John McCain simply as a show of support for our troops but whether supporting John McCain will ultimately lead us to the point where we have no National troops left to support. I think maverick is an unfitting term as a maverick is seemingly an offspring whose ownership is unknown. McCain is more like an unpredictable tornado that may take down that tree that was getting ready to fall over on your barn but it may just take the barn down with it. At what point does it go from good to bad to worse and who will control how that happens? We the People?

I heard an audio of a reporter stating that she had inquired McCain or McCain's campaign about how they intend to win. She said they stated that they are not going to be running a Bush style campaign where they are looking to stoke up the conservative base, they said they are going to be going after independents and moderates and were confident they could make up the difference in a loss of conservatives. This is more evidence of what they intend to do, and that is to lessen the influence of conservatives as much as possible. I don't understand how conservatives that support him don't see that which is right before their eye's, they are simply slitting their own throats. Its incredible.

What troubles me is how blind to the fact that McCain can't win his hysterical supporters are.

Oh! What an egomaniac you are, boy! To compare the USA to YOUR car, your personal property bought and paid for by you ("I paid for this country!!) as though your pulling a lever once every four years makes you the sole owner!
Well, boy, USA ain't yours to dispose of! We all get a say, and yours is just one pull among 120,000,000!
