Conference Call: Is McCain Out To Lunch?

I don't get it: from a McCain blogger conference call - Matt Lewis:

According to McCain, if Smith was going to attack his character, then he wasn't going to shake his hand.

To Jim Geraghty:

Paul at Powerline: Will wrote that you refused to shake Brad Smith’s hand?

McCain: It’s true. This individual savaged me and my character and my integrity, on many written and spoken occasions. There was no reason for me to shake his hand. I’m not embarrassed. If someone attacks my character and integrity, I’m not going to shake his hand.

(Reaction from Jim: This is not his finest answer.)

Does McCain even know what Will wrote?? Because his response makes absolutely no sense. Will claimed it was McCain who attacked Smith's character.

When Smith chaired the Federal Election Commission, he voiced skepticism about the wisdom and constitutionality of aspects of McCain-Feingold's campaign regulations. McCain responded characteristically, impugning Smith's character. When, at a 2004 Senate hearing, Smith nevertheless extended his hand to McCain, McCain refused to shake it.

Smith, behaving honorably toward someone who does not reciprocate civilities, today says McCain has an arguable case that, not having cashed any public checks, he should be released from his commitment and the spending ceiling. The FEC must decide, but it cannot act because it lacks a quorum.

McCain has a temperament problem. He needs to understand that he isn't just "some guy." He can't afford to refuse to shake a person's hand because he doesn't like him. For crying out loud, the man has to meet with world leaders who have ordered political opponents jailed and murdered. I may not like the Chinese Premier, or King Abdullah as a person but you can't refuse to shake his hand on the ground they are big jerks. Admittedly, I don't think McCain is taking the logic that far.

Obama certainly wouldn't behave with this sort of stubbornness. Of course, from a negative standpoint there is a big problem as world (it terms of world leaders).
