Commentary seems to like McCain, so it isn't surprising that Jennifer Rubin would call attention to some recent poll internals. But there are some other curious ones to me that she happened to leave out. See below.
First, with Hispanic voters, McCain leads 60 percent to 16 percent over Rudy, while Romney draws only 10 percent. These voters are 10.7 percent of the GOP electorate and were thought to be a source of strong support for Rudy. But the numbers tell a different story. McCain may get a further bump today with the endorsement of Senator Mel Martinez, who may not be the favorite among conservative Republicans nationally but is very popular with Florida’s Hispanic population.
Even more startling is this nugget from the poll: McCain leads 37 percent to 25 percent over Romney among voters who say the economy is the number one issue.
And so he does, which is important to 19% of voters. Yet, Terrorism is important to 22% of voters and Romney bests McCain 32 to 30, while with the 17% that view immigration as important, Romney cleans McCain's clock 36 - 16. They're basically tied on health care, with McCain up 3 on social security. That's not surprising given that the Senator should probably be collecting it, as opposed to crafting legislation on it, given his Chuck Norris certified advanced years. Just sayin'. Oh, and McCain also wins big with self-described liberals - 54 to 6 for both Rudy and Mitt.

Ah, the Republican Party. Where we'll actively hate you just because you have appeal outside your base. It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling when a political commentator takes a look at a conservative candidate's poll numbers and declares the candidate in question is getting too many votes.
When Romney finally does win the nomination, I will be eager to see heads exploding on the right as his rhetoric pulls a complete 180 in time for Nov 8th.

Islamboy, you have Republicans confused with nutroots, although there are some Republicans I might just put in the nutroot category with you. If you think your nutrootery(ha, a new word) will expand the base of the Democratics, then you are nuttier than I thought, and I think you're pretty nutty. In a good kind of a way.
