Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee threw out a truly dumb bit of economic populism during tonight's debate. And it seemed to resonate with, of all people, Jonah Goldberg at The Corner. Goldberg admits to being tired, perhaps he was actually asleep. What is being discussed here is a quick, short-term, shot in the arm for a sagging economy bordering on, if not in recession.
So, a road project reminiscent of the WPA, one that would take ten or more years to plan, billions and billions of dollars just to secure the right of way, and likely would not be completed until 2027 is the cure? Or are we going to pre-pay all the workers, as well as for the steel and cement? In context, what Huckabee proposed was dumb and based on his Governorship of one of the nation's smallest states. Nothing Huckabee says or does surprises, or impresses me. That any serious person would buy into it is the more puzzling issue. As he suggested, Goldberg must have been very, ... very tired, indeed.
I'd be curious to know if any of my colleagues disagree with me that Huckabee's proposed solution of building more highways — whether it's expanding I-95 or some other similar effort — instead of the rebate is a better approach than this rebate.

A poster at the Sundries Shack suggested using the money to build the border fence instead. Gets rid of a lot of the problems, keeps the money in country and benefits the entire country.
