I don't get it. This is a pretty lame piece. It's mostly 13 pages of reasons to stand by the stories, or why they didn't do anything wrong while everyone else did, until you get to the end, where they retract? And this below as regards Sanchez really is beyond pathetic - it's disgraceful.
In contrast to what Franklin Foer isn't telling us, this on page ten is rather petty of them. Why was it necessary to identify Sanchez as a former porn actor? He was actively blogging in Iraq and he treated Beauchamp with far more class than TNR treated him.
It first gave the story of Beauchamp's supposed fraudulence to a former porn actor turned blogger named Matt Sanchez
Yet, while making excuses for himself at every turn and qualifying every one of Beauchamp's apparent issues, Foer doesn't tell us what it is that caused him to lose credibility in a key source:
He is one of Beauchamp's friends, and, over the course of a number of e-mail exchanges with him, our faith in him has diminished.

Rod Majors is as much of a patriot and troop-supporter as Larry Craig. They are both Christian heros and are bound to go directly to heaven.
Amen, heroes.

Way to go, Bob. No one else gay-baits like a southpaw. No one.

Former porn guy is worth mentioning, former Marine is not. It also doesn't seem worth mentioning that Sanchez got the story on the ground in Iraq.
Push the button, Frank.

According to Teh Narrative, homosexuality is useful on "conservatives" the way a silver cross is on vampires -- show it and they either run away or dissolve into goo. Sanchez was not only a porn guy, he was a gay porn guy, and thus ought to be cross, garlic, and wooden stake all in one person. When we don't react as Teh Narrative predicts it causes a distinct incongruity, a Does Not Compute moment in the moonbat sensorium. They have to keep picking at it, like a four-year-old scratching a scab.

Ric,
They can't accept that it doesn't throw the conservative community into spastic fits of fury so they just pretend it does. Like Giuliani's divorces and drag skits, and Romney's religion. They keep 'picking the scab' (as you said) because they actually believe they've gotten the reaction they wanted. If reality doesn't fit, they make it up and just keep reworking the world to fit their perfect image.

Why the smear indeed. I was unaware that TNR and the left feels sexual orientation and employment choices automatically disqualifies them, because they rely on gay hookers and bolster their credibily when they say they've been with a GOP member in congress.
What a low life hypocritical bigot Foer is.

Rod Majors does not ask and does not tell - unless it involves spreading word of the VICTORIES in Iraq. He is to be commended. A true log cabin patriot.

From Foer's viewpoint, being a blogger is more shameful than being a porn star.

This from the same crowd who thinks "don't ask, don't tell" is a crime against humanity.

Matt Sanchez repented of his sins (including but not limited to sodomy and working for the "hire of a dog", i.e. his service as a male "escort" and gay porn actor)... moreover, he has confessed his belief in the Lord Jesus Christ, and has been saved by grace.
There is no sin too foul, no deed so wicked, that the Blood of Christ can redeem us from.

I notice that Mr. Foer names a number of members of Beauchamps unit that were involved. He gives the last name of the kid that TNR claims killed the dogs and the soldier who wore the part of the child's skull on his head. I think there are a couple more besides the Jibson and Short (page 3)and Kiple (the guy sent to Germany for mental issues). It would seem that it would be fairly useful for milblogers to track down Jibson and Short and get their stories. They could also check out the prank involving the dildo Beauchamp and his friends played on the conservative Christian. After all that story was endearing to Foer and company.
I thought from reading earlier articles by TNR and their blog The Plank that they'd promised these guys that they'd remain anonymous. Am I remembering correctly. Did Foer by publishing their names break his word to them? Even if he promised it to them via Beauchamp and never talked to them the promise is still valid.
I also noticed that he claims that TNR didn't know that the two had gotten married when she was doing the fact checking. That seems odd that they didn't know about the relationship and that she didn't tell them she'd gotten married. Most people don't keep things like that a secret from their co-workers or their employer. After all there is paperwork to be filled out regarding benefits, taxes, etc.

Airedale, IIRC, "Jibson" and "Short" are made-up names that Beauchamp created along with the rest of his fiction, so Foer at least told the truth once.

If Sanchez is publicly repentant of his homosexuality this represents a tasty hat trick for the TNRians and their peers. Matt is simultaneously one of those nasty, baby-eating military types, a Born Again (a most unforgiveable breed) and a traitor to his sexual identity in which, apparently, even the gay for pay are gay to stay in perpetuity but the "straight" merely dishonest about their leanings. Against such a foe any weapon will do. What says Sullivan on this event? Never mind.
