Huckabee's Head In The Sand Approach
Okay, we already have the NIE gaffe and the INS gaffe, but his Aids rationale is just laughable. Huckabee was calling for quarantine in 1992 and responds today here. Let's look at some history 1987-1992. Just from one news item in 1987, you have to conclude that Huckabee either had his head in the sand on the issue for years, or his position was motivated by some form of bigotry. Nothing else makes sense, given the incredibly broad public discussion over a period of years before he issued his 1992 declaration. Heck, the rock music community was big on this issue, I thought he was a fan? I actually don't think it's bigotry, so much as a sort of ignorance based upon a superficial understanding of major issues. He's all hat and no cattle.
1987:
At the beginning of January the UK Secretary of State for Social Services, Norman Fowler, visited San Francisco, and in a widely publicised visit shook hands with an AIDS patient. It was suggested that Princess Diana should follow his example, which she did later in the year.
On 31st March, at a ceremony at the White House attended by President Reagan, it was announced that an agreement had been reached regarding ownership of the HIV antibody test patent. The Pasteur Institute agreed that it would end its legal challenge, and would share the profits from the test with the U.S.
The following day President Reagan made his first major speech on AIDS, when he addressed the Philadelphia College of Physicians. Reagan advocated a modest federal role in AIDS education, having told reporters the previous day that he favoured teaching pupils about AIDS,
But on 31st May President Reagan gave a speech about AIDS at a dinner of the American Foundation for AIDS Research and particularly focused on increasing routine and compulsory AIDS testing.
The following day Vice President George Bush opened the 3rd International Conference on AIDS.
