On CBS News when asked about Global Warming:
And we ought to declare that we will be free of energy consumption in this country within a decade, bold as that is.
I think he actually meant oil - he's advocated being oil free before. Now tell me that isn't insane? In ten years, no less. That's not an intelligent response. And note: he completely dodges the question:
I don't know. I mean, the honest answer for me, scientifically, is I don't know. But here's one thing I do know, that we ought to not let this become this big political football and point of argument. We all ought to agree that we live on this planet as guests. I think Republicans have made a big mistake by not being more on the forefront of conservationism.
All the candidates responded, see Fred's response below and read the rest here.
There are a lot of unanswered questions. We don't know to the extent this is a cyclical thing. This may or may not effect very much. The extremists are the ones who want to do drastic things to our economy before we have more answers as to how much good we can do and whether people in the other parts of the world are going to contribute. It's the fact that our entitlements are bankrupting the next generation. We're spending the money of those yet to be born and we can't continue that way.
Couric: You think that the state of entitlements is a more serious problem than global warming?
Thompson: It's a more obvious problem. I mean, ultimately global warming may be a greater problem. I don't think we know the answer to that. I can't give you a list of specific items I would address. I think research and development has got to be at the top of that list.

If that sort of moronic statement from Huckabee doesn't wash him out of contention in Iowa, then we should give Iowa and it's strange inhabitants to Canada and call it a nice day.

I'm beginning to feel like I'm piling on in your comment section.
But, how many times does this make where Huckabee's best answer is, "I don't know?" Seems there is an awful lot he "doesn't know" that he should know by this point in a campaign if he wants to be elected the most powerful leader of the free world or really of the whole world.

Either that, or let all the states move their primaries to Super Tuesday except for the mega-populated states like CA, NY, FL, MA, TX, OR, and WA which should hold primaries in March to be fair.
Furthermore, the ultimate in POTUS campaign finance reform: forbid POTUS campaign donations entirely; and let private donations be made to the party instead, which splits the donations evenly among competing POTUS candidates in their respective parties.

As for the oil comment - that is utter foolishness.
We haven't even begun to seriously consider FUNDING research into alternative energies much less come up with anything that will get us off the Arabian oil teat in less than 30 years.
The only short term alternatives we have is to manufacture more nuclear power plants, develop solar power concentrator tower technology, and develop the ANWR resources, as well as develop the technology neaded to extract oil from the shale deposits in the Rockies... and then see if we can get our farmers subsidized not to grow stuff to startusing thier land to grow hemp and sugar beets to be converted into ethanol.
In short, a multi-pronged assault on solving our energy problems must be effected... and soon, lest Hubbert's Peak overtake us.

There has to be some point in time when Gilchrist, the Minuteman Project, and some evangelical leaders become embarrased by their endorsement of the second most liberal Republican runnning for President.
