The alleged outraged readers plant themselves, but that doesn't stop the Courier-Journal in Kentucky from propping them up in their opposition to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in what will be one of the closest watched races in 2008 behind the Presidential campaign. The Politico is already following the race here. This is the second smear campaign started by the likes of Think Progress against McConnell to make its way into the media. Here's the first.
There would be no controversy if Think Progress hadn't lifted a McConnell quote out of context from what was actually a positive story for McConnell:
“Our brave soldiers have protected us for six years successfully. If we brought all of them home today (terrorists) they would be back here, so we need to stay the course. It's gotten better and there is a dramatic decrease in causalities and we have begun to withdraw troops.” said McConnell. ”The polls are reflecting that there is a 15% increase in optimism in American's views about the war.
“I won't tell you everything is great in Iraq; it is not. But we want to keep a steady flow of funds so that we don't disrupt the military,” said McConnell. “Unfortunately, most of our friends on the other isle are having a hard time admitting things are getting better; some days I almost think the critics of this war don't want us to win. Nobody is happy about losing lives but remember these are not draftees, these are full-time professional soldiers.
now take a look: note how they trim the quote, just as Think Progress and about 40 other liberal blogs eventually did.
Courier-Journal: Readers express outrage over McConnell comment
In a revealing moment of candor, Sen. Mitch McConnell expressed his feelings about the men and women in uniform, who are dying every day in Iraq and Afghanistan and whom he otherwise claims to support, when he said, "Nobody is happy about losing lives, but remember, these are not draftees, these are full-time professional soldiers." ... TROY TORSTRICK
The alleged outrage goes on but who is Troy Torstrick? Just another Lefty blogger it would seem. He left his name on a blog and post dedicated to calling then serving Congressman Tom Delay a whore. scroll And between ranting about Emperor Bush, or Karl Rove and the Republicans and denouncing a war that nearly everyone supported before it started,
War will Succeed (#3083)
by Troy Torstrick on October 1, 2002 at 6:52 AMWar on Iraq will succeed in 2 respects; 1) it will undermine the war on terror by diverting resources and 2) it will drastically increase the anti-American sentiments of millions of young Arabs and radical Muslims and spawn thousands of new terrorists hell-bent on America’s destruction.
I want to know why George Bush is so determined to undermine his war on terror, which he claimed shortly after 9/11 as his reason for being. Is it so that he can use the fear created by all the additional terrorist activity against America to push America into the fascist dictatorship he has wished for publicly on several occasions?
As we all saw, he and his party had no qualms about doing away with democracy in 2000.
he isn't exactly one to talk about supporting our troops. Then they feed it back to Democratic Underground and it gets fed back to TPM just to keep it going. Maybe they'll get lucky and some other media will pick it up. That's the way the Netroots play - fast, dirty and cheap, as in shot.
“Unfortunately, most of our friends on the other isle are having a hard time admitting things are getting better; some days I almost think the critics of this war don't want us to win. Nobody is happy about losing lives but remember these are not draftees, these are full-time professional soldiers."
Every objective observer of DC politics knows Senator McConnell has been nothing but supportive of our troops. That's why Freedom’s Watch, Vets For Victory, Families United, Band of Mothers, and Gathering of Eagles see McConnell as a go to guy when delivering a petition to Congressional leaders signed by over 65,000 individuals in support of the war.
With no regard for accuracy, a continuing desire to undermine the war and also to seek revenge for the defeat of Tom Daschle, the Moveon.org types in the Democrat Party will stop at nothing to end the solid conservative Republican leadership of Senator McConnell. And when certain liberals in the mainstream media see a chance to help them out, they rarely miss a beat.
As Right-leaning members of new media, we can help the conservative cause, but we had better be on guard. You can contact the Courier-Journal here if you'd like.

The wrong-headed, anti-war trolls who comment here need another piece of good news to sustain them in their time of troubles. The troubles of course are the result of the MSM dam's breaking, allowing a flood of news stories that show Bush in general has proven to have been right about the threat and war. Of course many of the Dems were right about the war too, since many of them supported and continue to support the war though Congressionally approved expenditures. Guess the Dems were for it before, and after, they were against it. Here you go, Boob and friends, suck on this:
"Batiste, you will remember, is the formerly "antiwar" general who spoke out against Donald Rumsfeld, and who, until recently, was a Board Member of VoteVets.org (the antiwar MoveOn.org vets front group).
Today he joins Hegseth to write:
First, the United States must be successful in the fight against worldwide Islamic extremism. We have seen this ruthless enemy firsthand, and its global ambitions are undeniable. This struggle, the Long War, will probably take decades to prosecute. Failure is not an option.
Second, whether or not we like it, Iraq is central to that fight. We cannot walk away from our strategic interests in the region. Iraq cannot become a staging ground for Islamic extremism or be dominated by other powers in the region, such as Iran and Syria. A premature or precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, without the requisite stability and security, is likely to cause the violence there -- which has decreased substantially but is still present -- to cascade into an even larger humanitarian crisis.
Third, the counterinsurgency campaign led by Gen. David Petraeus is the correct approach in Iraq. It is showing promise of success and, if continued, will provide the Iraqi government the opportunities it desperately needs to stabilize its country.
There are two stories here: 1) A formerly anti-war general flips on supporting the war, and now believes Petraeus has the right strategy; and 2) Batiste has left VoteVets.org, and the antiwar movement, and joined up with the pro-troop, pro-surge, pro-victory Vets for Freedom.
The antiwar movement has lost one of its most powerful voices today, and it will be interesting to see whether they turn on one of their own, or come around to the view, supported by a preponderance of evidence, that the surge is working."

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Republicans maintained control of both congressional seats that were up for grabs in special elections Tuesday in Ohio and Virginia, disappointing Democrats who had hoped to extend their gains in the House.
In Ohio, a state representative defeated a Democrat making her third run for the seat. And in Virginia, a first-term state legislator easily won."

I can't find a point or a lick of sense in your post.
In what possible way do the preceding two paragraphs ameliorate McConnell's quote about the deaths of US troops? That he thinks the occupation is going well and that deaths of professional soldiers are acceptable is somehow better than the latter alone? That's a pretty thin defense, even if it were believable, which it is not.
As for his "support for the troops [whose deaths are acceptable because they're professional soldiers]", it's hard to see how or why that matters either. His critics never suggested he did not "support the troops" - in his own peculiar way. They pointed out that his comment about their deaths was incredibly callous. That's true whether or not he intended it to be supportive.
As for Troy Torstrick, it's hard to imagine why he is a focus of concern in the first place, or how your comments about his blog posts reflect on the general issue of McConnell's attitudes toward US casualties, but even taking your criticism at face value, it seems to have no point. That Tom Delay has no observable moral principle other than unbridled personal and partisan self-interest, that George Bush has not only created an American empire but placed himself above the law as its "Decider", and that Karl Rove is a putrid turd, are hardly controversial observations. As to Torstrick's remarks on the Iraq invasion, it's useful to note that both his predictions were precisely correct.
Your comments do nothing but underscore the accuracy of critics of the occupation and of McConnell's indifference to its cost. As rebuttals, they not only fail, they seem to have nothing to do with the points you ostensibly address: whether or not McConnell's remarks included "support for the troops", his remarks on their deaths were staggeringly unfeeling; whether or not Torstrick was right about the invasion (he was), he was certainly accurate in quoting McConnell's own words about the deaths of the troops.
What McConnell said about the deaths of US troops is what he is being criticized for; you have chosen to rebut that criticism by talking about what McConnell and his critics both said about other issues. As a defender of McConnel, or a critic of his opponents, you could hardly have failed more completely.

Whoa there, Kieth T. Kevin, in llama clothing. If the death of a soldier were ever "unacceptable", we wouldn't accept the death of soldiers now would we? But we accept and expect the death of soldiers in every war we ever fought and every one we will ever fight. And every soldier in this warring world knows it. Now whose eyes are you trying to pull the llama wool over? "Acceptable"? He never said it and you know it. That makes you a lousy, stinking, filthy liar who is biting the back of his neck in spite and fury because we won this war. Now, sir, does that help explain my meaning a little more clearly for you? Gee, I hope so.

"...critics of the occupation..." Oh my. So many little lies sprinkled among the big ones. Only a mouth-foaming BDS patient would call our presence in Iraq an occupation. We are staying in Iraq at the request of their freely elected government, now isn't that the truth, my dear madam, you viper?
