Kevin Drum, who actually links to enough to understand the context, points to Rich Lowry taking exception with Rudy for attacking John McCain over some flare up.
I admire the fighting spirit of the Rudy folks, but gee whiz. He's the front-runner! (According to the national polls.) There's no need to come off so defensively, and not every attack requires a nuclear response. Doing it to Joe Biden is one thing, but to fellow Republicans who aren't even a threat at the moment is probably ill-advised.
Obviously Reagan's Eleventh Commandment doesn't apply, as McCain fired first. As regards the front-runner meme, maybe Lowry hasn't been paying attention to how quickly that can at least come into question in this day and age given Hillary's recent experience.
I agree it shouldn't be all hardball all the time. But this is crunch-time and the game is hard ball in the end. If you don't like it, fine. But don't hate the player, hate the game.

I don't mind the digging... Rudy is right to hit back as hard as he did, given all the dirt and skeletons he is liable to have to keep buried.
