Update: I haven't been following this, but some people who have may be found here - scroll down. Registration required to comment.
Just heard this on the car radio while driving. Huh? Hard to know if this is another quirk of the Dutch judicial system allowing more investigation, or if someone finally talked and the jig, as they say, is up.
The Associated Press is reporting police have once again arrested three suspects in the 2005 disappearance of then 18-year-old Alabama high schooler Natalee Holloway. Those arrested were Dutch teen Joran van der Sloot and two Surinamese brothers named Satish and Deepak Kalpoe.
Update: Extradited? Hmm. No doubt Google News will eventually have more. Previous extended coverage of the crime is here.
Van der Sloot was arrested in the Netherlands, where he is attending a university, and is expected to be extradited to this Dutch Caribbean island. The Kalpoe brothers were arrested in Aruba.

Anxious to hear more!!

I am so glad to hear this. I hope they are able to put these guys away for years. Anyone who is innocent would have not lied as often as they did. Hopefully someone spilled the beans on these guys or they found the body with DNA evidence attached to it.

Great to see this is getting worked on again. It was beginning to look like the "Aruban OJ" got away with it.

Missing people human interest stories have been cannibalized by stories which include (bit not limited to) decapitation and cannibalization. I dont think people give a damn about Natalee unless it is determined that her bones were consumed by human acts.
Posted by: Jill | Thursday, November 22, 2007 at 12:21 AM
I think people do give a damn about Natalee. The press release said manslaughter, which means they have a body for the first time. The acts you mention would be murder, not manslaughter. Somebody must be talking. They probably found the body near the fishing shack where she may have been buried approx. 4:00 A.M. after Paulus said 'no body, no case'. Unless the acts are commited by real professionals, secrets like that cannot be kept forever. People eventually talk about what they know and when the charge is manslaughter they will assess their options and are more likely to talk than when the charge is murder.

Hi Dax!
I don't think they have a body, which was most likely dropped at sea. It is more likely text messages or overheard conversations that conflict with previous statements made by the suspects.

The spokesman for America's Most Wanted said the investigators went back and searched the houses, one family had replaced all their furniture and had concrete poured on the property. He didn't say who the house belonged to.

Perhaps so; topics like these draw away from the shortcomings so easily found in our politicians and policies that are the bulk of the discourse here.
As for Ms. Holloway or Ms. Behl, I would not wish to make light of their suffering ... but it is the ol' "missing white woman syndrome". It draws people's attention like a 5-day old banana peel does fruit flies.

Maybe, but I guess the reason it is on a political blog is because the issue can be thought of as political. But Mr. Riehl would have to answer that for sure.

I'm still thinking that we have much more to learn before we label the bothers Kalpoe and young mister Van der Sloot as criminals. All we're hearing is all the media has chosen to share.

==================================
A somewhat privileged young white kid who emulates being in a gang and has a large gambling debt. Two flunkies who hang around with him so they can have a chance with white girls. They are not professional criminals, just some young people who were not so nice one night when they OD'd a young lady for traffickers in the casino, who would wipe out the gambling debt on his behalf. Maybe some GHB so they could have some fun themselves before putting her on the boat to Venezuela. Too much GHB, she died. The true "criminals" will never be found but authorities will be able to hang a manslaughter charge on the Kalpoes and tourism can then resume business as usual in Aruba.

The idea that Natalee's remains may be located on the property belonging to one of these three suspects is sickening. Ice-cold to carry on life literally on the grave of an innocent girl.
Btw...I've been known to whip out a 'yepper' or two. So just get ready.

I was surprised and very happy to hear the news as I imagine the family of Natalee is elated. These guys should not be able to get away with it. It just sickens me the way Van Der Sloot said "I thought I left this behind me", and is sickens me that he was going to school knowing that Natalee cannot live on with graduating with honors and go forward with her life and career, and it sickens me to see the smiling face of Van Der Sloots father while his son is being led away like his son is a celebrity or something. It shows me that his father probably not only knows what happen but also knows where the body is and probably helped in hiding it. "No body no case" were his words. There is so much to say on this case and I know there are so many people that are wrapped up in it and want to see justice. How can those boys sleep and night. I think there are other people that might know also, probably friends of the Sloots. They have been there a long time. And since they have been there a long time they know every nook and cranny of that place. A place where to hide a body. If she is in the water I dont think she is in deep, I think she is in shallow near the edge of something and if she is in the woods she could be buried under like a weeping willow tree in a shallow grave or in the land fill. It covers a lot of ground I know. Poor Natalee God rest her soul. Those monsters, lets get some justice for the family. Were the old copper or gold mines or refineries searched? Also, did any of the close friends of the families do something unusual around the time of her disappearance. I think the Kalpoe boys mother knows in her heart that they did it. I would like to think that one of the boys had a conscious and would fess up but hardly doubt it. Usually in cases where there is more than one culprit someone talks but in this case I believe it is the Van Der Sloot dad that is making sure the glue stays on the lips. I think the police know more now in this case but are keeping a low profile as to why they are bringing them in. Another thing I would like to say is that I don't appreciate the way Arubans were telling the press and searchers to leave. It concluded me to believe that they hate Americans and the only reason they want us there is to collect money from us.If it were their child that was missing you can bet they would not leave one stone unturned. Or would they? Maybe they don't care about their children the way Dave and Beth cares about theirs. I would not go to Aruba not only because of Natalee but because most of the Aruban people seem to be rude and mean not to mention have no compassion.

That it did... guilty as charged. :)
But in my case, it had less to do with any lingering interest in Missing White Girl who went missing (and probably dead at this point) than it does in a slight academic interest in why people will care much more about the MWG than a missing women of colour or even a missing white woman of average looks and modest family income.
"--- Maybe just alot of new people that dont know how this site got so big. ---"
I dunno if Dan's coverage of MWGs was so substantially the bread & butter to his blog's rise to fame... maybe so. I was initially attracted by his political blogging, and as I've been visiting here for only a little over a year... I guess I missed the "main event" such as it was. :P

I really don't think a body was found, it has been way too long. If she was dumped in the ocean, not much would be left by know except perhaps her bones, skull, but the fish, sharks all that is out there must of eating her up. Two years have passed.I also dont think her body was buried, because she would have been found when the tragedy occured in 2005, Aruba is a pretty small island and hundreds searched for her. She might have been cremated or thrown at sea. The problem from the very beginning of the probe was that Joran and his guys had almost two weeks to really clean up their tracks, before they were finally arrested.
So either someone is taking or the prosecutors again don't have any real proof to stand in trial and the boys will be set free again. I doubt this will ever be solved, unless Joran cracks, and that is highky doubtful.
Posted by: Gia | Friday, November 23, 2007 at 12:08 PM
A trial or plea deal that would convict Joran and the 2Ks may not be the really big news that emerges from this story. A bigger story would be revealing the identity of those who helped cover up the matter....I seriously doubt that those 3 could have by themselves engineered the complete vanishing of Natalee Holloway's body with apparently no other witnesses.

Really, it's the fact that she's "white" that stimulates your academic interest? Well it must be racism, pure and simple. This is all a laboratory experiment and all of the posters are your guinea pigs. You can use this blog to prove your thesis that all caucasians are racists. So now that your social discovery is out for all to see, do you suggest we make a penitance for not blogging about MBW or missing gay women or missing Chinese women etc. etc.? Perhaps justice can be had by sentencing every causcasion to whip himself/herself 20 times with a wet spaghetti noodle (of course this will benefit white Italians but I cannot think of a better atonement at this point).

"I brought her back to the hotel".
"I left her at the beach".
The text message pings may tell the true story.
Why did it take so long to get the pings? According to Fox news, apparently the pings came from cell phone towers in places like Venezuela and it takes a while to trace these things. Why did no one mention this possibility 2-1/2 years ago? Greta, didn't your staff think about this? Then there is the matter of wiretaps between K and JVS. Eventually, the truth comes out.

I'm sure that on some level, race does perhaps enter into the equation (since Caucasians are still the majority race in the USA and Canada) and a certain knowledge that sordid details sells papers and advertising time on TV, radio, and internet media.
However, I am not trying to prove that "all caucasians are racists" ... in fact, most people are very racist. We are simply programmed that way until we are educated to suppress our urges to identify (even to the point of irrationality) to people of like skin colour and appearance.
Or, until we are redeemed by the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all may be saved, and return to the true brotherhood we have as a human family through our Creator.

Dear Beth:
Being a bereaved Mother myself who has lost my only daughter in an automobile accident, my heart & many prayers go out to Beth Holloway Twitty & David Holloway. Believe me everything that you are doing to try & find your daughter & also to find the person or persons responsible are totally the natural thing to do & I wish you all the success in the world getting this accomplished. I hope & pray for Natalie & your sakes it will be very, very soon.
I lost my daughter when she was 21 years old in a horrible automobile accident on Dec. 22 & her funeral was on Christmas Eve Day. Her name is Anne. Anne died instantly of her injuries. I know all the facts that caused her death & was able to have a funeral for her within a couple of days. I hurt to the core of my being over this every single day & I know I always will. Beth & David I cannot even imagine what it has been like for you not knowing any of the particulars or who exactly did this unthinkable thing to your precious daughter. All you have to go on is who & how you feel. I admire your strength & perseverence more than you can ever know.
Beth I also went through a separation & a divorce the following year after Anne's death for what I really think are similar reasons.
Just know that the hurt & pain you feel are felt by everyone who cares about you & about Natalie. Anyone who doesn't understand don't matter anyway! One thing my pastor said to me that always stands out in my mind is, "THE MORE YOU LOVE, THE MORE YOU HURT".
May God bless you both during this very difficult period in your lives. I hope this issue is resolved as best as possible. I wish you both a brighter, happier future with the love of you daughter always in your hearts. You are in my prayers daily for this stage of your hurt & loss to at least end with the truth being revealed & proper steps taken after that. I pray for your future that it will be happier & that you will find some peace from this.
In Christian love,
Ellen
PS: Somehow I hope you get to read my post & whether you do or not I had to write this & hopefully you know in your hearts there are many, many people out there pulling for you!

Ellen-
I'm so very sorry for the loss of your daughter. I'm sure that extending your prayers and good wishes to the Holloways helps you in your own grief. Anyone with children or without cannot imagine the horror of going to bed every night not knowing where your child is. It must be like living a nightmare without ever waking up from it !
God bless you and your family.

I see this is good news and somewhat sad news at the same time. I hope that they really DO have something this time and are not putting these 3 young men (as well as the families, of course) through all of this again for nothing... or just to prove that they still want to solve the case by the imposed deadline of Dec. 31 when they have to release them as official suspects or hit them with a charge that sticks... I do believe that Aruba has always wanted to solve this case. I do also feel the the immediate forced involvement by the Twitty-Holloway camp magically arriving and being confrontational in the middle of the first night that everything had occurred hampered the investigation from the start. I was visiting on the island at the time and it all stays very clear to me. There were many odd events brought on by the Holloway camp. The Arubans weren't totally to blame for the initial misteps. The words out have already been contradictory, so yes, here we go again. The Procecutor seems to feel that they have evidence that Natalee is dead, but confirms no body. Wiretaps? When? It has been my understanding that the Kalpoe brothers and Joran had not been speaking and have not been on good terms since the whole event had begun. I want justice to be done and Natalee's family to finn peace and closure, but not at the expense of 3 young men who just might get railroaded here. I just hope that all is handled fairly here. I am concerned, but remain very interested and am optomistic that closure may finally be near... I just hope it is just and fair.

I move that Rush to Judgment be tabled until the Dutch legal system plays itself out; that American neophytes cease insinuating US presumptions onto a foreign legal system; that The Mob learn the difference between "evidence" and "innuendo", and pick up a book longer that 20 pages and read it straight through -- do *some*thing to train its attention span to being longer than a Sesame Street skit they were weaned on.
