Update: The reporter, Rebecca Aguilar has been suspended. Ironic considering she appears to have also just been named Hispanic Journalist of the Year.
So much for bloggers stalking people in the news. Leave it to a real journalist to go over the top. Police say there was no crime comitted by him. He's a senior citizen, a veteran, and ultimately he's reduced to tears by a reporter following up on a story after his business was broken into twice in three weeks. Video below. Updated here.
"Are you a trigger happy kind of person? Is that what you wanted to do, shoot to kill?"
story here: A Ledbetter-area business owner fatally shot a suspected burglar Sunday morning – the second time in three weeks that he killed an intruder, Dallas police said.
James Walton, owner of Able Walton Machine & Welding in the 2000 block of Chalk Hill Road in West Dallas, was alerted to the intruder when his motion sensor system activated about 9 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Fox News is a sensationalist network. They only look "conservative" because all the other news sources are more left-wing than Trotsky himself.

Fox news on cable and local Fox news are not the same.
Posted by: Lala | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 01:03 PM
Local TV news is mostly just cheap filler material between really, really annoying local commercials. They didn't have to pay James Walton to use his story to help sell cars and furniture.
The really sad part of the story is that the crime rate is killing small Dallas businesses on the South side of the Trinity river. How would anyone get a loan and insurance to start a new business in this area?

Jesme, perhaps we should stop guessing about her intent and ASK HER....if she'll admit it at this point.
I'm a normal middle class american woman and i know how it came across to me. Pretty much how she intended.

Has he really had 42 burglaries in a year? If so, I would say that he has the patience of a saint. I would have taken action loooong before that.

To all of you who are saying Ms. Aguilar was only trying to get the compassionate side of the old man's story, then why didn't she interview him in his HOME instead of stalking him to the gun shop then asking "Whats in the box?"
She did exactly what most of the people here SAY she was doing. She had every intent of making him squirm.

Something to consider - she stopped the old man coming out of Academy Sports with his new shotgun. If she was going to interview him, wouldn't she have gone to his home or business place? To catch him at Academy she should have had to follow him there. Isn't follwing him some kind of harassment?

Ambush Journalism - the mark of unprofessional journalism.
Posted by: seekeronos | Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 03:04 PM
There are plenty of other people she could have gone after.
She could have ambushed the criminals asking why they were breaking in. She could go after the police asking why they can't protect the public. She could go after the District Attorney and find out how many of the other 42 break-ins have been prosecuted.
But no, she goes after an old guy just doing the only thing he could do.
I hope the network steps up and fires her!!

Maybe someone should check to see if she is legal...

"I think Aguilar's mental image features a poor old guy who got fed up."
And I think it features a borderline maniac who wants to swagger around with an AK-47, blowing away passers-by at random. Because firearms ownership is all about psychological instability, you know. And compensation. Though at least she seems to hold him in sufficient esteem to assume he won't just start his engine and back over her, like she clearly deserved.
Seriously, Jesme. "Are you naturally trigger-happy?" That's not "goading him for the money quote," that's "declaring him guilty with no chance to prove innocence." That's "calling him a cold-blooded killer to his face."
And, as long as we're talking perceptions and templates, that's also pretty much what we've come to expect from Professional Journalism as a whole. Particularly after the "newsroom convictions" of the Duke lacrosse players, if you need something more anecdotal.

I thought it rather shameful the way they focused on his shaky hands & said he was "uncomfortable" with having had to shoot the thugs - what, have they never heard of senior citizens with shaky hands? Leave the nice fellow alone for crying out loud, he deserves respect & honor, not criticism from the likes of her. I'm glad they suspended her, I hope they fire her next. She'd make a great New York Times reporter, she certainly doesn't belong on Fox.

Here in Los Angeles, the local Fox News (channel 11) is far to the left of any other English-language station in the area. Even CBS.
About 75 % of their reporters are card-carrying La Raza types, and it's wall-to-wall left wing propaganda. I especially enjoy the woman reporter who pronounces English named locations as Spanish terms, then corrects any English-speaker if they mispronounce a Spanish name. Needless to say, I seldom watch them anymore.
So, no surprise this was on Fox.

I wonder if Senorita Aguilar's panties are really bunched because Mr. Walton has a border fence around his property? I already know La Raza's position on this.

As a Texan who was revolted by this, I would have put her under citizen's arrest, by force if necessary, for unlawful detention.
A reporter did this same dogsh*t to a sheriff deputy friend of mine for a couple months when he shot a crack head that was actively trying to kill him.
As a civilian, I would never take the load of crap my deputy friend had to take from the head-injury estate. Nor would I have taken it from this Aguilar c*nt.
The producers should also be shown the door.

"What the eff has happened to Fox News?"
FOXNEWS is not responsible for that report. FOXNEWS is a separate division of FOX; this woman works for the FOX broadcast station and its local affiliate.
That said, I think a lot of people kid themselves about the nature of FOX NEWS. FOX- the entire company, both the broadcast and news channel- is about sensationalism. Greta Van Susteren, Bill O'Reilly, and the obnoxious, invasive "special reports" are the defining personalities of the network, not Brit Hume or Neil Cavuto.
Much like certain radio personalities, many people who don't necessarily enjoy a lot of the content watch because they ask liberals the questions that no one else will ask. But make no mistake, FOX is the way it is to make a splash.

I'm not ready to let this go and i don't think RiehlWorld should be either. What does a news show do? It reports the news. Well THEY WERE the NEWS. And now they want to intimidate and censor? Well this isn't right.

I guess Rebecca would just let a stranger take her property without defending it! Honest hardworking citizens have every right to defend their property. This gentlemen was well within his rights. I believe the reason there is so much crime and "brazen" criminal acts is that there's often no consequence for their actions. IF criminals are captured, how long are they actually off the streets before they are released to continue to take what doesn't belong to them and worse yet, take someones life. I for one am fully prepared to defend my home and property. If someone comes into our home uninvited they will be looking down the barrel of a gun and we won't hesitate to use it to protect ourselves.

Certain investigative reporters (paparazzi included), such as witnessed by FOX 4 News' Rebecca Aguilar, appear captured on their own videos as practicing illegal incarceration and/or unlawful detainment of their interviewees in order to get fodder for publication. It's as if it's a practice reporters resort to, perhaps to fulfill some quota set by their employer. Shame on Ms. Aguilar if she acts this way on her own volition.
It's no wonder that Mr. Walker was in tears, perhaps because he has been put through such badgering, intimidation, threatening and intrusive tactics by the deceased robbers, and now a reporter, all because they fail to understand that Texas Law permits home owners and business owners the right to defend themselves and their property. Mr. Walker acted within Texas law. The deceased robbers weren't stupid. Criminals also know the laws, but these two decided to break the law, and their decision cost them their lives.
By the way, what did Ms. Aguilar have to say about the Metro PCS cashier who was shot in the chest through a glass door on September 15, 2007 by a robber, while witnesses and bystanders mosied about and DID NOTHING! Did she treat the cashier with the same contempt as she did Mr. Walker just because the cashier tried to defend someone else's business as he attempted to lock the robber inside?
Tell it to FOX 4 News' Tim Ryan. He seems to have things in the proper perspective. Can't wait to hear what he has to say about all of this.
