In a sad sort of way, TNR's abandonment of the troops has come full circle.
Invoking Kerry, though not directly, and as per Michael Yon, Beauchamp no longer has much of a role to be scrutinized in this story, but think of it this way, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck (writing from Iraq) for someone who has never held a job outside TNR. And after they exploit your ambition, they will abandon you with a deafening silence that leaves your name to twist in the wind, as they apparently lack the courage to speak for themselves as the centerpiece of the story that they have become due to their own incompetence and inaction.
Foer has tried to control the story, quashed interviews with other media outlets and has now sought comfort with Kurtz, who unfortunately didn't ask any hard questions at all. Perhaps it wasn't allowed?
Beauchamp is stuck in Iraq. As for Foer, he appears, for now at least, to simply be stuck.
