The Not So Liberal American University System

Classic liberalism allows for the airing of different views, but does today's neo-liberal academic tradition actually hold to that standard? Maybe not so much.

A recent quote from Maloney on the recent Columbia kerfuffle:

“At the same time that Columbia invited a noted nemesis of America and virulent anti-Semite, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the university cancelled a speaking engagement from Jim Gilchrist, the leader of the Minutemen, a group that seeks to enforce America's borders,” Maloney said.

To say nothing of Columbia University's advocacy of free speech, as exemplified by their BANNING the R.O.T.C. on campus.

Oh, I see, it's perfectly okay for enemies of the United States to be INVITED to speak at Columbia, but Heaven forbid (gosh, am I allowed to say THAT at Columbia?) that representatives of the United States Armed Forces be allowed to speak to students.

Heaven forbid that Columbia University students be given the FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION or the FREEDOM OF CHOICE to be able to decide for themselves if serving (honorably) in the United States Armed Forces is something they wish to do (or not)!

And, if this little exchange between Columbia University President Lee Bollinger and Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was a Presidential Debate, I'd have to give it to Mr. Ahmadinejad. Mr. Bollinger seems to think that by asking a "tough question" and NOT demanding that his "opponent" actually ANSWER THE QUESTION that he, somehow, made president Ahmadinejad look bad, then he doesn't know shit about spin.

The only HINT of disapproval from the audience (to Mr. Ahmadinejad's comments) were in response to his Holocaust "research" statement, and when he announced that Iran had no homosexuals.

What was even more disturbing than Mr. Ahmadinejad's comments, was the applause his comments received - especially in response to his discussion of the Palestinian "problem".

Knowing that this university not only gave a forum to Mr. Ahmadinejad, but that they said that they would also have given a similar forum to Adolf Hitler during World War II is telling of their lack of patriotism (YES, it IS unpatriotic to HOST an enemy of the United States, and to give them a forum from which to spew their vitriol).

The fable that universities are tolerant and allow free discussion is perhaps our greatest myth.

Read a little history. Academic freedom applies to academics. They very wisely prefer to be immune from consequence for their views and activities. Who wouldn't?

Academics and universities do not extend that tolerance to others.

Since the university and college system is so heavily tied up into the Dept. of Education...

Any academic who receives government grants and/or other financing (to include research loans or even back down to their undergrad loans), should have to pledge an oath of loyalty to the United States, and to Constitution, as well as a statement to the effect that they shall teach a curriculum that avoids anti-American propagandizing.

Questioning policy is one thing, but agitating and brainwashing ignorant students into un-American, unpatriotic defeatists or even anti-American jihadists is positively evil and disloyal, and should be punished with every degree of severity meted out to traitors, especially during wartime.

And if that cannot be done, then the entire Dept. of Education should be disbanded: that is, rolled up like the ratty, thread-bare rug that the pet chihuahua keeps urinating on, and discarded with an appropriate level of disgust.

As for Ahmadinejad, whoever in Columbia came up with the bright idea of inviting that foul snake to spread his cancerous lies upon our sacred soil should have had his neck stretched out thoroughly.
