As with many things, we tend to take blogging for granted in America. And while what bloggers accomplish here matters from time to time, it's hard to compare it to something like this. Read it all.
Having failed to stop the cyber-dissidents broadcasting to the world, the authorities have simply switched off the internet.
Now Ko Latt and his blogging comrades have abandoned their keyboards and gone underground, sleeping in a different place every night, watching and waiting to see if the democracy movement has been truly crushed or is simply on hold. “When things were hot on the streets, we were not the main worry,” Ko Latt says. “But as the situation cools down, they will follow us. They know who we are, they know we are bloggers, and I am afraid.”

and so the light of free speech goes out in the socialist republic of burma. ah, well. as the great socialist lenin noted - as he was ordering the execution of millions of his own people - "ya gotta break some eggs to make a socialist omelet." socialists/progressives/liberals REALLY don't like unauthorized speech, as a look at china's 'internet information control' policy or the democrats 'earmark secrecy' policy clearly shows. (for further edification, see any liberal university's "speech codes". straight outta orwell.) we might also note that venezuela & bolivia's once-free press is slowly being strangled by THEIR socialist dictators, too.
liberals will of course reflexively deny this is a trend, and attack the messenger.

Liberals/progressives/socialists, just like any tribe or collection of humans, crave power: the ability to subject and reduce others outside their tribe to obedience.
The difference is their utter ruthlessness and inhumanity they are willing to stoop to in order to get their way.

The US and all the other 'free' embassies over there should setup some nice, open WIFI access. Turn the embassies into 'freedom' hotspots. (Just don't be caught standing outside with a laptop taking advantage of it!)
