US Prof Putting Out Enemy Propaganda Overseas

I thought this was a joke, but it isn't. I found it as I have spent several days trying to ascertain the fate of Taliban Leader Mansoor Dadullah, targeted in a recent air raid in Afghanistan.

Despite the best efforts of Taliban propagandists, claiming massive civilian causalities, as Rusty eventually posted, there were hardly any civilian causalities at all when the story was fleshed out.

Now weeks later, here comes an atrocious article illustrated with the worst of images (graphic depiction of a child in hospital) claiming massive civilian causalities and giving our enemies all the propaganda it could want under the heading of a US-based college professor: Marc W. Herold. And based upon his web page, there's no reason to doubt his contribution in distributing it. Read his article - then read the truth - there's no getting around it, he is distributing pure enemy propaganda.

I have frequently been asked (and criticized) why a development economist should be concerned or know anything about, civilian casualties of war? My answer has been that in some thirty years of teaching and researching about the Third World my focus has been upon how “development” has affected the everyday lives of people. Sadly, such development has created an “economic body count.” My interest in civilian casualties explores how modern wars result in a “war body count,” severely affecting the everyday lives of simple, innocent people struggling to survive. The very same point has recently been made by the former chief economist of the World Bank, Joseph Stiglitz, in his Globalization and Its Discontents (New York: W.W. Norton, 20002) on p. 24.

Marc Herold was the one who came up with an infamous calculation of Afghan civilian casualties after our invasion which purported to show that we'd killed more Afghan civilians than the terrorists had killed here on 9/11.

the key phrase in herold's little 'graph o' bullshit' is how he describes other people: they live their "simple, innocent lives". **classic** liberal condescension. you see, *other* people - not liberals, of course, who are deep and smart and more important than everyone else - other people are simple and childlike. basically good, if led to the proper conclusions by their liberal betters, but needing to be kept "down on the village" for their own good. like in olden days! the ones where the prof said they all shared!
