Update: see here for latest on charges and other angles.
Update6: Still more - the state and Feds seem to be fighting over what the definition of "bomb" is - and the two may be subject to immigration charges, as well: John Little has some interesting and possibly pertinent background on the rocket angle mentioned below.
An officer at the detention center said explosives and possible immigration charges will likely be filed Monday. A news conference is scheduled for Monday at 11:30 a.m.
The law enforcement source, who insisted on anonymity, said the materials included at least one bomb and a number of bomb-making elements, including chemicals capable of being used in the production of bombs, fuses and igniters -- small gunpowder charges used to ignite some explosives.
Update5: Oh, I get it, they were rocket scientists.
Police became suspicious when one of the men tried to hide a laptop computer. A search of the car turned up pieces of pvc piping, various model rocket motors and other items considered suspicious.
Update4: Reuters - no terrorism link. So why did ABC lede with one bomb ready and material for another at link below and take it down with no correction? I thought only bloggers did things like that?
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The FBI said on Sunday that there was no evidence of a terrorism link in the case of two college engineering students who possessed explosive materials in South Carolina over the weekend.
The two men, described in local media reports as non-U.S. citizens of Middle Eastern descent, were taken into custody late on Saturday near Charleston, South Carolina, after local police noticed what looked like explosives in their Toyota sedan during a routine traffic stop.
The FBI said the material proved to be for making homemade fireworks, not dangerous munitions.
"There's no (terrorism link) that we've identified at this point," FBI spokesman Richard Kolko told Reuters.
"They got pulled over and had just enough suspicious things to warrant investigation. We don't think there's that much to it. They had some materials to make some pretty good-sized homemade fireworks but not bomb stuff."
Update3: You figure it out, now the link says the following. They are expected to be charged with something related to explosives tomorrow. Maybe they were going fishing? They sure look happy.
There are conflicting reports as to the quantity of explosive making materials in that vehicle. FBI (website) reports are saying that there is not believed to be a link to terrorism.
Update2: One bomb ready to go, materials for another using chemicals. Also video at link. It's thought that they may be students.
Goose Creek - Two men are being held in the Berkeley County Detention Center after police find explosive making devices in their car. The men had atleast one ready to go bomb and bomb making materials that include chemicals.
Something tells me they ain't Irish Catholics: Larwyn reports CNN stated the devices were fuses and igniters of some type.
WIS News 10 spoke with officials at the Berkeley County Detention Center who said 24-year-old Ahmed Mohamed and 21-year-old Yousef Megahed, the occupants of the car, are still in police custody.
So far they have only been charged with possession of explosive devices, but the FBI is working to see if more crimes have been committed.
The Berkeley County Sheriff's Department tells WIS News 10 the two men are not US citizens.
Update: Latest wire report:
GOOSE CREEK, S.C. - Two men were detained after police found and detonated a suspicious item found in their car during a routine stop for a speeding violation on a highway near Charleston, Berkeley County sheriff's Lt. Vince Lombard said Sunday morning.
Lombard said the men were being held pending a charge of unlawful possession of an explosive device, but he would not say what the device was or what bomb technicians from neighboring Charleston County exploded about 2:45 a.m. Sunday.
The item made a loud bang, similar to a firecracker, when it was demolished.
Update: According to the AP, the two men are still being held at the scene 7 hours later and the bomb squad is going to "demolish" a suspicious device. Blogs of War links to this photo.
Cannon said two men who were in the car were still at the scene at 2 a.m. An FBI agent said officials were trying to determine whether a crime had been committed.
The Gordo’s main purpose was to dock our nuclear submarines for repairs. The weapons station was often closed to civilian traffic as they moved nukes and ordinance to and from ships with Marine guards on orders to shoot to kill.
Update: Hmm ...
State and federal law enforcement officials were on the scene after the traffic stop in Goose Creek. Television stations reported that two men riding in the vehicle were detained.
Goose Creek is home to the Naval Weapons Station and the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants have been held.
Update: They updated the video again - fuller report, no flub. Updated link from below - the Joint Terrorism Task Force is said to be on scene, FBI currently heading the investigation. you can see a bomb squad member in full gear near the vehicle when they zoom in and after the reporter finishes flubbing it over a "robot bomb squad detector thingee" ha. Word from the scene is no danger now, investigation on going and should be for some time. One report indicates it isn't clear if a crime has been committed.
More details:
WIS News 10's sister station in Charleston, WCBD, reports authorities pulled over a suspicious car at around 6:00pm Saturday. Officers asked to search the vehicles, and discovered what investigators say are "possible explosives" located in the trunk.
Once federal agents were brought in and analyzed the situation, an FBI-controlled robot pulled a bag filled with the suspicious items from the vehicle.
The two men inside the vehicle, which is reported to have Florida tags, have been detained at the scene.
WIS News 10 talked to an FBI spokesperson who told us she could neither confirm or deny a possible link between the vehicle and a terrorist plot.
Update: CBS affiliate is claiming there was a bomb

Are we fighting them here now? Isn't this what the Blunder in Iraq was supposed to stop? What a bad joke the Republicans are - 'strong on defense' indeed. What a myth.

Nah, just good Democratic voters, demonstrating the level of patriotism that we've all come to expect of them.
Go amke sure they have links to your blog, Bill. Hate for them to miss that.

(whines) ohhhhhhhhhh, this is just *awful*!!!! we *knew* this was going to happen! we should just go ahead and surrender NOW, so as not to make them any angrier at us! everyone knows that confronting them, or fighting back, only makes things **worse**!!!

"Are we fighting them here now?"
We're catching them here now. I realize how disappointed you are that their bomb didn't get to self-actualize and how devastating that is on a bomb's self-esteem, but you're just going to have to cope Bill. Suck it up trooper.

Why do you suppose the MSM hasn't picked up on this, yet?
Posted by: Nice Deb | Sunday, August 05, 2007 at 03:40 PM
Hmmm, it sounds like they could just be young men who wanted to blow some stuff up for fun and not hurt anybody. At this stage it isn't 100% obvious that that's all it is, but I wouldn't rule it out.
Boys will be boys... especially engineering students.
Posted by: Nicholas | Sunday, August 05, 2007 at 08:15 PM
Engineering students should be smart enough not to build things that both blow up and look suspicious, and they sure should be smart enough not to get caught in a traffic stop. Does anyone know why they were originally pulled over?
Posted by: JorgXMcKie | Sunday, August 05, 2007 at 08:38 PM
Maybe, Nicholas ...
But I'd feel a bit better if they were engineering students named Charles and Dan, from a local college.
Those guys do look happy. Think they're waiting on CAIR to bail them out, and sue the local constabulary?
Posted by: JLawson | Sunday, August 05, 2007 at 08:50 PM
We knew this was going to happen at some point. These guys have been trying for awhile and at some point they will get "lucky". The dems and libs will not admit that this is a Global War on Terror. It means we have to fight them over there and over here.

Flashpowder, when packaged right, is just as dangerous as any other explosive. It's also a hell of a lot easier to make than some of the other binaries out there.

Charleston, SC is also home to a huge Air Force base. Goose Creek is a suburb where lots of military families live.

Apparently they were pulled over for speeding. Had they done their homework, they would've known that Goose Creek is one big speedtrap.
Posted by: Charles Nelson Reilly | Sunday, August 05, 2007 at 10:17 PM
Every town in SC is a speed trap. They could save manpower by just putting up 100 dollar tolls to drive through their skanky little towns.
I hope CAIR tries to sue the local constabulary. They, CAIR, won't know what hit them. ha

I recently participated in a homeland security training session for citizens to be aware of DLR'S (Doesn't Look Right!) and this seems to be a perfect example. We learned that terrorists have trial runs to see what they can achieve before doing the real deed and if everyone in the U.S. is alert, these people will have little opportunity to accomplish their mission. This looks very much like a practice round to see where they can get with explosives, perhaps just below the legal limit. Perhaps they deliberately got caught for speeding as part of their test. I feel this is definitely a DRL!!!
Posted by: concerned citizen | Monday, August 06, 2007 at 12:39 AM
I think this is beginning to look like a big cover up from the FBI. It started out as "explosives", one of which was put together and another which still had to be constructed. Then it moved onto being engines for rockets. But why then would a couple of immigrants, arabs mind you, here with student visas from Florida be traveling down a road (traveling in the opposite direction from Florida) that leads to the Naval Weapons Station and which also is near the local of some of the terrorist prisoners and also, something that has not been said, is the location of a nuclear power plant? Usually most folks can put two and two together. Its not like the recent suicide bombers have had weapons large enough to take out hundreds or even thousands of people. So in this case, they might have been small explosives. Yet small explosives can cause a large amount of damage if they are set off in the right environment. For instance. The aluminum plant located in Goose Creek, SC has rules and regulations pertaining to certain carry on items that are under pressure. (lighters, soda cans/bottles, neither are considered a threat if it were to explode) The reason... If one of those items were to drop into a boiler, it could cause a chain reaction and there would be a large explosion.
Things like this just aren't coincidence. There had to be a meaning behind this. The evidence is there. It's just the governments job to cover it up.
Posted by: Chris | Monday, August 06, 2007 at 01:37 AM
^^^Correcting myself from above. The nuclear power plant is in Monks Corner, just outside of Goose Creek. But not to far away.

This is going to turn out exactly like the 'bridge bombers' in Michigan who were put in jail, given no bail and called terrorists all for being arabs and having photos of a bridge and I believe some cell phones. It is idiot, red neck racists, who see terrorists under their beds doing what they do best, rushing to judgement and then lying to cover it up.
Geeze, people, the Feds can barely get convictions on terrorism charges when there is actual evidence of connections to terrorism or on the record conversations about at least the desire to do terrorist avtivities and support for terrorist goals.
Yeah, I know, its OBVIOUS they were terrorist because they were (a) arabs (b) in the same state as a military base.

You must all be so disappointed that it wasn't a legitimate terrorist attack attempt, in fact I know you are all deeply disappionted, I can tell by the level of hysteria that was seen after it was found out they were, gasp, arabs.
You are all dying for a terrorist attack to occur so you can say 'see' we told you eeeeekkkkk.
In typical winger fashion, the non terrorist event is now a DRY RUN, and/or an FBI/MSM conspiracy to keep the truth of the terrorist attack from the public. It is impossible for wingers to admit they are wrong.
When the witch doesn't confess, we need more torture!

nowinkie, you are an Arab, why do people seem to dislike Arabs? After all, the only thing they've done to us recently is fly a plane into a building, no big deal. Well, of course there is also the fact that they regularly emit videos saying they hate us and want to destroy us. Then of course there are people like you who are paid propagandists for them. winky - show me the "hysteria",
-----------------------------
Is that a joke? Read Dan's ever increasing 'hysterical' tone, read any other right wing blog and comments.
It isn't my fault that the right wing is ever hopeful for a terroist plot to be uncovered so they can justify their paranoia and that in almost all of the cases they turn out to be absolutely nothing but overzealous red neck cops, and that even when the FBI tells you there is no terrorist connection, you still refuse to believe it and insist on the 'dry run' theory.
BTW, why aren't you trashing the media for hyping this case? Oh right, because in this instance, it feeds your own viewpoint so you want it to be hyped as much as possible.
Wasting resources for arabs with firecrackers and cell phones does no good in finding real terrorists, all it does is convince people like myself that there are not any real terrorists in this country, and that even if there are, the gov. isn't capable of finding them, AND convinces arabs in this country that the gov. is predisposed to call them terrorists, so nobody in the arab community is going to talk to police, we are fast creating exactly the same kind of culture we have in the black community, where people would rather live next door to a gangland crack house than turn them into police.

nowinkie writes: "we are fast creating exactly the same kind of culture we have in the black community, where people would rather live next door to a gangland crack house than turn them into police." What a condescending and racist thing to say. There are African Americans complaining to the police about criminals all the time.
Posted by: Fred Beloit | Monday, August 06, 2007 at 12:16 PM
Oh please, give me a break. Crimes in the black community go unsolved because nobody is willing to come to court as a witness and there is a predominant culture that 'snitches get stiches' and that the police are all racist and that crime and violence are an acceptable response to our so called racist society.
How else do you think young black men get killed routinely in broad daylight in view of several witnesses and yet these murders go unsolved?
It is exactly the same kind of pathological thinking that the Palestinians have which enables them to actively promote a culture where the best thing a young person can do is commit suicide while trying to kill some random jews, any jew will do.

All 1.5 billion of them?
It only took a handful of them to bring town the twin towers.
It's only going to take a handful to commit the next act of terror. Do we only take a threat seriously when it comes from "all 1.5 billion"?
Not a smart strategy to me.
Forums and blogs are places where people often vent their frustrations. We see our government and local authorities running around like the keystone cops. Just because a few people get a little overzealous with presumptions when these kinds of incidents occur does not mean that we are a nation of islamophobes. It just means that people are frustrated.
We have suffered a horrendous attack. Every day we are warned that more attacks are planned. It is not the episcopalians, the baptists, the catholics, or the jews making those threats.
The fear of another MUSLIM attack is very legitimate, very normal, and very real.
Discounting the threat because of some rants on blogs is not helpful.

If what you say is true, my darling, how did all those African Americans get into prison? Break in? It is pointless trying to talk to a stone. The racism still left in America comes from people like you who believe African Americans are helpless victims who cannot take care of themselves.

Dealing with terrorism in an ineffective manner helps no one, least of all the American public.
Wasting money compiling lists of petting zoos in order that some congressman can get pork money for his district via homeland security terrorism grants does nothing to protect us from terrorism.
Constantly fueling the public's fear of terrorism does nothing to keep us safe, indeed, it will eventually desensitive people to the point nobody will pay any attention.
Searching old white ladies in wheelchairs and confiscating water bottles and shampoo does nothing to keep us safe. It wastes our resources, it is a knee jerk incredibly stupid reaction to a real threat.
Revving up hatred and suspicion of all arabs and muslims does nothing to keep us safe, in feeds into what the terrorists tell their own people and works against getting the arab community to cooperate and report real, actual suspicious behavior.
Refusing to admit mistakes and rushes to judgement--like this case, and the cases of the cell phones and michigan bridge incident--by charging people with any 'crime' they can possibly come up with does nothing to keep us safe.
Hyping the terrorist threat and talking about 'hundreds' of cells or claiming that groups like Hezbollah have cells in this country just makes the government look like its lying to a lot of people who pay enough attention to the ME to know that these groups all have different ideologies and targets.
And lastly, we are spending now $12 billion a month in Iraq, the alleged 'front line' on the war on terror, which has, by our own government's analyis increased the threat of terror, increased instability, increased distrust of us among muslims worldwide and created a haven for our real enemy al quada, where one did not exist before. And by the way, what happened to those 180,000 guns that are missing in Iraq?
An incompetant war on terror is worse than no war at all.

Still haven't been "disappeared" yet, nowingker?
If we apply the standards you and your ilk have used to characterize our current President, we come up with a new rallying cry ...
"NOWINGKER LIED, 'CAUSE HE'S ALIVE!"
"... and created a haven for our real enemy al quada, where one did not exist before ..."
Tell that to any al-Quada still alive and mobile in Anbar and Dialyah ... more and more, those areas are "havens" only in the sense that they are now gateways to 72 virgins/Virginians/goats for al Quada.
Posted by: Rich Casebolt | Monday, August 06, 2007 at 01:36 PM
It is a fact that there was no Al Quada in Iraq until some time in 2004. Our own military have admitted it, just like our own military have admitted that Al Quada makes up a minority of fighters and that they are responsible for a minority of the attacks against our soldiers and Iraqi civilians.
Gee, I guess that makes Dick Cheney, of the legislative branch a bald faced liar, doesn't it?
But, we all know that Bush and his administration full of liars never let the truth get in the way of a good talking point.

nowingker writes:
"An incompetant war on terror is worse than no war at all."
I don't think anyone could disagree with that, nor do I think anyone is arguing in favor of an incompetent war.
I certainly don't see any evidence that our government or other institutions are "revving up hatred and suspicions of all arabs and muslims." Government officials are just doing what government officials do...they are covering their asses, just in case...
Posted by: David | Monday, August 06, 2007 at 02:11 PM
I see abundant evidence that we are waging an incompetant war on terror, and I see the administration, rather than admit mistakes, dig its heels in again and again in defense of policies that clearly have not worked and are not working, I see the administration claim 'successes' and thwarted terrorist attacks that under even the most rudimentary review of details simply do not hold up.
When the government hypes terror data, or claims terrorist ties when none exist and when the president and vice president spend all their time telling citizens that we are in a death struggle against radical islam that will take decades to win the obvious result is increasing hatred and fear of the targeted group.
All you have to do is read the blogs, see what local yokels are doing all across the country and its clear the result is suspicion of all arabs/muslims based only on the fact they are arabs or muslims.

oh goody, a winky "fact", doesn't quite live up to the usual spew -but funny just the same
got any more for us?
Posted by: charles | Monday, August 06, 2007 at 02:33 PM
I completely agree that there are mountains of evidence that we are waging an incompetent war on terror. I do not believe we should be fighting a war on terror at all. Terror is not the enemy. Terror is a tactic used by certain muslims in their war on non-muslims, or anyone else they deem un-islamic.
I would also agree that there are many people who are suspicious of all muslims/arabs. Suspicion is not the same as hatred and unreasonable fear, although I will admit that there is often only a short leap from one to the other.
John Doe does not fear all arabs or all muslims--only the ones that are trying to kill us.
John Doe does not hear or see protests from muslims when their religion is used as a basis for attacks. He only hears about riots and killings and protests when cartoons are drawn, books written, or when "islamophobic" speeches are given.
Militant Islam is in this country. There is no denying that. It has to be dealt with. If the muslim community isn't seen stepping up to deal with it, then they cannot be separated from the threat.
Right now, the biggest voice in the US from the muslim community is coming from CAIR. If I were a muslim, I would change that as quickly as possible.
If there are lots of "moderate" muslims in this country (and I believe there are), they need to figure out a way to deal with the elements in their community that are proponents of violent jihad and the establishment of sharia.
I don't believe that what is written on blogs, in general, is indicative of what everyone in the country believes. In general, only the most opinionated and passionate people will post on blogs and forums. Most Americans are quite reasonable.

I'm 99.9% sure that if I was stopped with a digital camera and a load of cell phones I wouldn't be charged with planning to blow up said bridge or that if I was stopped speeding w/firecrackers and a lap top in my car the cops wouldn't close the road, throw me in jail w/out bail, tell the press I had a completed 'bomb' and bomb making devices before any tests were done and then charge me with some cockimaimy felony explosives charge.
What's the common denominator? Arab men. The fact that they ARE arab men makes them suspected of terrorism when in the exact same set of facts if they were white men or asian women, no charges would even have been made, let alone terrorism charges.

"Arab men. The fact that they ARE arab men makes them suspected of terrorism when in the exact same set of facts if they were white men or asian women, no charges would even have been made, let alone terrorism charges."
As it should be. We are not being threatened by white men or asian women.
I'll quote you from above:
"Searching old white ladies in wheelchairs and confiscating water bottles and shampoo does nothing to keep us safe. It wastes our resources, it is a knee jerk incredibly stupid reaction to a real threat."
I agree. We are being threatened by (mostly) arab muslims. Why suspect white men, asian women, old white ladies in wheelchairs, when the threat is from arab men? Poor allocation of scarce resources.
I don't know how the "arab students with firecrackers" incident will turn out. Trumping up charges against anyone is a foolish strategy. We don't yet know how this will turn out. The facts have not yet been disclosed. If in fact it was all a knee-jerk charade, then shame on the keystone cops.
Posted by: David | Monday, August 06, 2007 at 02:57 PM
Most Americans are quite reasonable.
----------------------------------
I used to believe that, but no longer. I've seen my country increasingly go to the polls and cast their votes based on arbortion and gay marriage, ignoring issues of crime, health care, the economy and every other real problem we are facing. I saw half the country vote for George Bush a second time, and even today, when he's made a mockery of American democracy, almost of a third of Americans still support him. I see a country that knows more details about Natalee Holloway than they do global warming or the war on terror.
We have become a country that doesn't have the time or patience for the big picture, we're so used to soundbytes, quick fixes and 24 hour news cycles that's all we understand anymore. If it isn't sexy or can't be explained in 10 seconds, we're bored. We're bored with democracy, too, every election cycle more people give up, and assume that since government is corrupt and incompetant, why bother, better to focus on ourselves and our families...

Wouldn't it be better to base suspicions on evidence instead of religious affiliation or ethnicity? It's fine to say, hey, these arab guys are near a military base, from out of state, they've got a lap top and some weird looking 'potential' fireworks...let's check it out. No problem.
But, when we get into closing the highway for hours, telling the press that they had 'bombs' and 'bomb making devices' and then possibly charging them with felonies to save face, instead of saying, 'hey, it was fireworks afterall, sorry....' is when we cross the line from reasonable suspicion to persecution based on ethnicity and that does no good. Ruining the lives of two arabs college students because some podunk cop over-reacted and then everyone else over reacted is stupid and counterproductive.
If they made a mistake they should just admit it instead of trying to turn nothing into something so they don't look foolish.
