Not necessarily my reading list, but a list of some books and authors you might like to check out, if you can find them. Don't look for anything contemporary. You may need a library, more so than a bookstore for some of them.
Blue Highways by William "Least Heat" Moon - a wiki I'm glad someone recommended it to me many years ago.
In 1978, after a divorce and losing his job, Heat-Moon, 38 at the time, decides to take an extended road trip around the United States, sticking to only the "Blue Highways," a term he coins to refer to small, forgotten, out of the way roads connecting rural America (which were drawn in blue on the old style Rand McNally road atlas).
The Discoverers by Daniel Boorstin
Anything by John McPhee - The Control of Nature - Basin & Range - The Pine Barrens rate a mention, though it's hard to single out a few.
One Hundred Years Of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - I'll never forget reading the closing pages of that one.
That's enough for now. I'm surprised a work of fiction made it onto the short list. I read a ton of it when I was young but now, why read fiction, when we have our lives? ; )

"why read fiction, when we have our lives?"
That's why we read fiction. :)

It's not much of a summer reading list if there's no baseball in it. So I nominate The Head Game by Roger Kahn, any of David Halberstam's baseball books, 3 Days in August by Buzz Bissinger, and Moneyball by Michael Lewis.
As for McPhee, haven't read all or even most of his books, but the one I liked the best was The Headmaster
