I never completely bought that this was coming from the McCain people. The clues were too obvious, someone wanted people to think it was McCain and that makes the entire thing an attack meant to hurt all the Republican candidates.
It'll be fascinating if someone can get to the bottom of it, but I suspect that won't be easy and might even require some legal action to track IP's and so forth. That might not be something anyone is interested in doing.

Forget all the electronic sleuthing stuff. Just find "the driver" then sic a TV news crew and/or local blogger watch on him. If he was hired, he'll flip and spill it all in a matter of days.
The guy has neighbors, friends, enemies, goes to the grocery store, etc. Someone will know his face. A $1,000 cash reward for information leading to his definitive ID and a blog burst campaign to spread his mug around will turn him in under a week and doesn't require any legal paperwork.
