Despite well documented attempts by the Bush administration to prevent a backlash against Islam post 9/11, today it finds itself being attacked by the Council on American-Islamic Relations. What is troubling is it further exposes the group as purely a political actor of the liberal, and perhaps ultimately, actually the pro-Islamist, variety, as opposed to a group genuinely interested in the perception of Muslims and Islam by non-Muslim Americans.
A responsible group with its alleged motivations would be working closely with a Republican administration which has gone to great lengths to diffuse inter-religious tensions as a result of the rise of radical fundamentalist elements within Islam itself.
Mr. Ahmed, who spoke at CAIR symposium at the National Press Club, said the war against terrorists is driven by an "irrational" fear that the Bush administration has inculcated in the American public. The chance of being killed in a terrorist attack, he said, is 1 in 80,000 over a lifetime.
Ahmed's arguments are either ignorant, or intentionally designed to deflect from the real threat of radical Islam to America. While that threat could one day be large body counts, or an individuals fear of death by terrorism were radical Islamists to come into possession of bio or nuclear weapons, America is already seeing tremendous damage from this threat resulting from the costs and initiatives required to guard against future attacks.
CAIR does nothing to foster better relations between non-Muslims and moderate Muslims and they need to be treated more as a political organization, or perhaps even a front group for the most radical groups of Islamists, than as a group seeking to be helpful to moderate Muslims in America.
If the voice of moderate Islam in America is allowed to become the voice of CAIR, that voice is doomed to be rejected and possibly worse. Full article here.

Perhaps, but the chance of a Muslim in America being killed solely because he is a Muslim is only 1 in 100,000,000 over a millennium.
