One of the All-time great songs by one of the all-time great bands. Talk about standing alone on an island.... who even approached these guys back in the late sixties?....no wonder Clapton wanted to quit Cream and join up with these guys (only to be turned down)
One of the coolest moments in memory was when I went to see a band up in Georgetown Connecticut and Garth Hudson was sitting in on keyboards for the regular guy who had a prior commitment.....talk about magic....

"who even approached these guys back in the late sixties?"
That would be the Hawk, Ronnie Hawkins, who, legend and wiki has it, basically built the band because he liked to steal talent from his competition, resulting in assembling the lot from various groups over time. Dylan picked them up after they left Hawkins.

I love it. My favorite by The Band is The Weight. I've got Dylan's "Before the Flood" right here. Bought the two CD set just for "The Weight". Then I just listened and it's mindblowing. Saw them in Charlotte and Dylan actually laughed and had a good time. That was a switch... as if The Band brought Dylan alive.
Best magic? Allman Brothers. wow.

"Before the Flood" is on my list of 10 albums you'd absolutely need to have if you were stranded on a deserted island. The versions of "The Weight" and "Dixie" on there are the defining ones as far as I'm concerned. Heck, the way they juice up "Like a Rolling Stone" is killer too...this could go on and on and on and on...
"Live at Fillmore East" by the brothers has gotta be on there as well....
