In a newly released tape, al qaeda's Ayman al-Zawahiri provides the usual talking points - see Rusty here and Laura Mansfield here for text, but look how he starts out:
We are going through a historic period of utmost importance in the history of the Muslim Ummah ... a number of masks have fallen away. It seems that the Muslim Ummah was in need of this period, for it to be shown the way; for the deception to become clear to it; for it to know who its enemy is, who is betraying it, who is loyal to it, and who is defending it; for it to be cleansed of its diseases and illnesses which sapped its strengths; and for it to make a new start
Quite a trap they sprang, given that the above means al-Qaeda has found out there are people they assumed were with them when they're not. Anbar is one such place that comes to mind. The recently uncovered plot to hit Saudi Oil fields may reveal another, particularly given some of his rhetoric below.
And when your battle plan is going forward, armies aren't usually thinking about making a new start. Behind his ridiculous bravado of wanting 200 - 300 thousand American dead, this may be the first time al Zawahiri has acknowledged a crack in the martyr's mortar, so to speak.
This is a very defensive message designed for consumption by his own, not so much us. Look how this below flows right into the next bit about the infighting in various groups.
Jihad in Iraq today, by the Grace of Allah, is moving from the stage of defeat of the Crusader invaders and their traitorous underlings to the stage of consolidating a Mujahid Islamic Emirate....
Next question:
Some level the accusation at you that al-Qaida and the groups in agreement with it and then the Islamic State of Iraq after them have all become embroiled in the futile mire of sectarian warfare. What is your opinion?
And this is almost funny. He says: This is something which no intelligent person believes...
But look at the next question:
What is the way out of this sectarian fighting?
LMAO Keeping in mind this is all scripted, his follow up question to his saying there is no sectarian strife is, how the hell do we get out of this? I'll quote a couple longer passages as he launches sort of a plea for help.
I imagine that the first step towards emerging from this affair is that those who colluded with the Americans and Crusaders in the London conference, the Salahuddin conference and the other secret meetings stop serving the Americans and empowering the Crusaders in Iraq of the Caliphate and Islam, and that the religion-traders stop forbidding the Iraqis from resisting the Americans and stop inciting the Iraqis to fight the Mujahideen
Q: But do you imagine that, among those who have become embroiled in these crimes, there is anyone who might be sympathetic to what you have proposed?
Answer?NO, and he's calling out the Saudis I suspect expressing the view that they've deserted whatever slogans they used to raise. This man feels betrayed, not confident.
I imagine that there are beneficiary leaderships, and that some of their followers may have consciences in which there is some life, but those leaderships are intent on establishing certain concepts which nullify the intellects of their followers and prevent them from understanding the Quran and Sunnah ... through claims of noble lineages and connections with the unseen, in order to use them in political conflicts which often clash with the slogans they used to raise.
Then he launches an appeal directly to the people to turn on their own Arab governments:
... there are followers running behind those leaderships, and I imagine that there must be among them people ... in which there is a remainder of life and love for the Prophet ... and which can't possibly accept this humiliating surrender to the Crusaders, ....
Thus, I call on those who still have intellects and consciences to refuse what these beneficiary leaderships impose on them and the loss of religion and life which they are driving them towards.
Surrender? I thought his side is winning this fight according to him? Doesn't really sound that way, to me. And it's worse. I am pulling the following quote up from way down in the text after he circles back to talk of Iraq. Crisis is not a word of confidence.
But some see this method as stirring up differences between the Islamic movements, and see it as fragmenting the power of the Muslim Ummah as it faces the most violent Crusade in its history, and see that priority should be given today to uniting all movements of Islamic action in an attempt to get out of this crisis. What is your opinion about that?
After some pleading, he gets to the heart of the damage done by the Dems. He uses their surrender vote to issue a threat:
Thus, I warn everyone who has helped the Crusade against Iraq and Afghanistan that the Crusaders are departing - by their own admission - and soon, with Allah's permission, so let him ponder his fate and future.
There's a tremendous amount of the usual nonsense in it. But I'd encourage you to take the time to read what you can of it and ignore the headline making bits. I doubt the bravado is what the intel agencies will be focused on.

That last quote you have there is a threat that al-Qaeda will take murderous revenge Just as soon as we leave and people stop killing them. Don't hold your breath Mr. Zawahiri.

Americanize the names and this could be about Congress.
Put that last quoted line up on billboards all across Iraq and the U.S. BOTH countries need to see it in their face.
My gut reaction is that al Qaeda is disorganized and out of touch/control. Despite his bluster, he sounds desperate.

Good news, good times. zerodegreeskelvin/BoobibBridgeport must be biting himself in the back of the neck over this post. "Saddam, Saddam, looks like you need that one-handed shootin' rifle again, your pals are getting worried. Saddam...where is that boy?" That there are no victories by the enemy proves they are winning? I don't get the logic, my dear friend, zero. The enemy isn't winning, accept for those who have the dumb idea that war should have a time table, especially one to publish for the enemy to read.
