Okay, that question isn't for liberals. It might be unfair to expect them to know. ; )
The real question is: Who is behind those earmarks?
Earmarks are spending measures inserted in legislation by congressmen acting behind closed congressional doors. Because they are anonymous, it is impossible to know whether earmarks benefit a particular congressman personally or members of his or her staff, campaign contributors, business partners or family members.

I'll answer for the lefties-Big Govt is their daddy!

Hahaha! On noes! Democratic Earmarks! We need to elect more Republicans so they can spend our money on more important things like Medicare Part D and giant bridges to tiny islands in Alaska! Someone protect us from the Democratic earmarks!
You guys are a riot.

Courtesy of Republican Senator Stevens - the internet tubes guy:
Dubbed the “Bridge to Nowhere,” the bridge in Alaska would connect the town of Ketchikan (population 8,900) with its airport on the Island of Gravina (population 50) at a cost to federal taxpayers of $320 million, by way of three separate earmarks in the recent highway bill.

More earmark stuff. Republican Duke Cunningham - The Dukestir - went to jail for his earmarks.
Undersecretary of Defense Stephen A. Cambone has ordered an internal study of how funding earmarked in a bill by then-Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-Calif.) led to contracts for MZM Inc. to do work for the Pentagon's newest intelligence agency, the Counterintelligence Field Activity, a Defense Department spokesman said.
Cunningham pleaded guilty last November to tax evasion and taking bribes from contractors, including the former president of MZM, Mitchell J. Wade. Wade pleaded guilty last month to bribery-related charges and to making illegal campaign contributions to Cunningham and other legislators.

Zif,
Medicare part D has paid for itself. It's a remarkable success.
To say nothing of the fact it really helps a lot of old, poor people.

"Medicare part D has paid for itself. It's a remarkable success.

Not according to any old people I've spoken to. I've got grand-relatives up in New Jersey who swear up and down about how annoying and obtuse it is.
And the fact that the drug prices are set BY the drug companies doesn't save us a fucking dime. What are you smoking?
Posted by: Zifnab | Thursday, May 03, 2007 at 12:28 PM
Ummm Zif, I talk to folks all the time who LOVE Medicare D. Far more than your whiny, entitlement sucking, mouth breathing, relatives in Joisey.

My God, what's happening here - Hard Right and Phoenix talking about how wonderful socialized medicine is.
Posted by: jong | Thursday, May 03, 2007 at 12:51 PM
Only when its Republican socialized medicine. Kinda like when Republicans run a massive deficit or hemorage pork or molest a teenager. Classic IOKIARDI.
Btw, I've yet to hear anyone pipe up about how letting the dealer set the prices saves us money on medicine. Much less how HR's relatives are simply overjoyed by paperwork.
Posted by: Zifnab | Thursday, May 03, 2007 at 01:02 PM
I wouldn't call medicare D socialized medicine. It's as close as I'd want to get, however.
Again you try to mischaracterize our views. In my case some govt involvement isn't a bad thing depending on what it is and how the govt does it. I also think most Conservatives feel the same, but I could be wrong.
Posted by: Hard Right | Thursday, May 03, 2007 at 01:08 PM
Zif, you're being a hypocrite and liar as usual. You're the ones who defend Dems no matter what.
As far as molesting minors, what does that or Gary Studds have to do with anything?
BTW, I talk to far more elderly people than just my relatives. So like most things, I know way more than you do about the issue.
Posted by: Hard Right | Thursday, May 03, 2007 at 01:16 PM
"As far as molesting minors, what does that or Gary Studds have to do with anything?"
Ah, there we have it. Classic IOKIARDI.
"BTW, I talk to far more elderly people than just my relatives. So like most things, I know way more than you do about the issue."
And you can gladly tell us about how they enjoy doing all the paperwork necessary to get their prescription drugs. Also, you can enlighten us by explaining how the government saves money by letting drug companies set rates for what they sell to the program.

Zif claim they claim to have a great free system in Cuba, though Fred Thompson disagrees. Go to Cuba Zif. Get well soon, but stay there.

Hey genius, what Rep molested a boy? Foley was chasing an ADULT. Hence the Studds comment. Not to mention where did I say it was ok? Nowhere. Try refuting what I DID say...not that you can.
Also, the majority of people I spoke with didn't have a complaint about the paperwork. You also assume that by letting the drug companies set the price, that no savings can be obtained. I'm not surprised though as you think evil corporation are behind most of the bad things in the world. You need to be on Memantine or Zyprexa.

Dan Riehl's daddy is Ann Coulter. Sorry to break it to you dude but I went to grammar school with him before he had the sex change thing. I introduced him to your mom.

Lighten up Dan. Its just a joke. You conservatives have no sense of humor. Like ole Andy Coulter used to say, "Those third graders should be lined up in front of the monkey bars and shot." What a great guy he was. Thought he had a better chance of making it as a T.V. "constitutional lawyer" without the penis. The old blond bimbo affirmative action thing.

Or did you want to talk about Medicare Part D?
Posted by: ec1009 | Thursday, May 03, 2007 at 07:44 PM
Zif,
Medicare part D has been a success because of..... wait for it....capitalism. The drug companies had to compete with one another to get customers. What do you suppose they did to get customers? Raise the price of drugs? The government working with private industry turned out something good and every drugstore and participating drug company in the country busted chops to make it easy for senior citizens. The combined effort to help the seniors was so amazing that all in charge were flabbergasted that it worked so well.
As for our deficit - Google it and check out our GNP at the same time. Our economy rocks. Bush's tax cuts have managed to cut the deficit exponentially faster than anyone thought. To manage this in a time of war? Pretty amazing .....

Pardon my interruption here, as I am normally just a lurker, but after reading Zifnab's ill-informed comments about Medicare Part-D, I had to laugh. Hard Right, Phoenix, Fred Beliot are correct that Medicare Part-D actually does work and saves money for the elderly. How do I know, you ask? Well, I work for a major, nationwide HEALTH Ins. Company, who offer Medicare Part-D, and supplements and all of our customers who use this program tell us that it has helped immensely. Now they do not have to worry about whether to by food or medicine. Now they can get both. So as for a Government program, it really has done rather well. Now Mz. Clinton's "Universal Health Care" would break the bank and everyone paying for it. ie: TAXPAYERS. Ever wonder why we (taxpayers), do not have the same healthcare that our Senators and Representative have? Why don’t these same Senators and Representative pay for their own healthcare like everyone else? Medicare Part-D actually helps those who need it and your assumption that is doesn’t shows how ill-informed you are on that subject.
and jong, why haven't the MSM told the American people about Senator Fienstien's(?) "earmarks" that made her husband and other relatives millions of dollars in contracts that she sat on the committee who handed these contract out too? Randall Cunningham got what he deserved, but why all the silence about Senator Fienstien(?), maybe because she has a (D) behind her name?
Posted by: Pothus | Friday, May 04, 2007 at 03:44 AM
I'm against basically all earmarks, including Feinstein's. If she did something wrong, they should go after her. But if you look at the numbers, they've exploded with the Republicans in power.
So how come US citizens pay more per capita for health care than any country in the world, but we still have millions uninsured?
Posted by: jong | Friday, May 04, 2007 at 01:03 PM
We pay more because we have the best health care, Erica, haven't you noticed? We do have millions who are uninsured. We also have millions of drivers who are uninsured. We have millions who have no life insurance. Are you expecting to pay for all this insurance? Or perhaps you are in the group that constitutes about half our population who pay no income taxes whatever so it won't cost you anything?
Posted by: Fred Beloit | Saturday, May 05, 2007 at 01:50 PM
Best Health care? By what measure?
And comparing motorists without insurance or people who don't pay taxes is to poeple without health care is utter BS.
