A frightening thought for any parent, no doubt.
CALGARY (CP) - Carrie Kohan has experienced the dread of knowing a convicted pedophile was stalking her two-year-old daughter. It’s been nearly 10 years since an aggressive neighbour entered her home with the intention of grabbing her little girl.
Police warned her to keep her doors and windows locked and to watch her daughter carefully. Fear eventually drove her to move away and into hiding for five years to get away from the man who already had three convictions for sexually assaulting children.
"Even now everything’s unlisted. I have to stay totally under the radar, and it’s something I have to stay conscious of every single day," Kohan, the founder of Mad Mothers Against Pedophiles, said Thursday.
So, given that child predators are often re-offenders, is it really a smart idea to take some number of them and pay them to look at kiddie porn, in some cases, when they are on parole, in the name of research?
Nearly 300 sex offenders, including some pedophiles on parole, will be paid to study computer images of children and discuss their sexual and emotional reactions, as part of a joint university study.
The joint project, by professors at the universities of Lethbridge and Toronto, has outraged a victims' rights group, which say taking part in research that might prevent future victims should be an obligation of sex offenders, "not a job."
At least 250 subjects will be recruited in Ontario, through corrections officials, parole officers, hospitals, clinics and provincial police to participate in the study, which begins this month.
The men will be paid $60 for two to three hours' work. During that time, their sexual and emotional reactions to photos and video images of children and adults will be assessed by a team of researchers in a lab.

...And people asked why I moved from Canada...
Liberalism and socialism ruin society to the core. Liberalism turns pedophiles into celebrated subjects deserving to honored.
When I was in high school a guy in my class molested 2 little girls. He got 6 months probation, when the news got out who at our school it was, he got punished by people who were better disciplinarians than Canada's broken socialist Liberal government. Then the kids who beat him him up got expelled and went to juvy for a few days.
Yeah, Liberals really care about our kids. Not. They would rather protect pedophiles than the defenseless.
Unless of course we are talking about defenseless al Qaeda, or defenseless Mexicans who want to leech off society. Then the Libs start caring.

"as part of a joint university study."
Oh shit! Someone conducting science! Save us from the research!
Didn't anyone ever tell these "professors" of "psychology" that ignorance is bliss and the best way to handle a sex offender is two in the brainpan? Rehab is for quiters.

I'm not so sure I'm outraged about this. IF there is a chance the 'research' finds something that can be fixed, good. We research and test every other aberration of the human condition, why not pedophilia.

If the research can find a way to lobotomize pedophiles so they never think of doing it again I'm for it.

I want one of those sick f#cks to come by the house. I have no intention of calling 9-11, or moving away.

Where did you get the "kiddy porn" part. I read your quote, and the way I see it, they are going to show them images of "children", not "kiddy porn". If I were constructing this study, I'd start out with kids at one end of the age spectrum or other, and analyze the comments made from the same person as the age increases or decreases. I'd also show pictures within these age groups of kids in various states of dress, from snowsuits to bathing suits, and adults in the same level of dress, and analyze the different comments from both the pedo and control group about all of these images.
There may be a common "trigger" involved here, or some other insight can be had. Yes, it seems a little wierd, and as someone who has little use for social sciences, I also think that it's going to be useless, but I don't see anything nefarious about it.

"Where did you get the"
Read what they say: "to photos and video images of children and adults"
And frankly, showing someone with that predeliction attractive images of children amounts to kiddie porn in this context. If they dont think they will be aroused, why monitor them at all? But granted, the media reports weren't good on indicating the real content of the material. Why? I don't know.
