Fair enough, but your etiquette towards former office-holders is actually higher than that expected towards the Queen, as Mark Steyn pointed out. It's 'Mr President', 'Governor', or even 'Mr Ambassador' six times in a sentence, when the guy was ambassador to Whoop-whoop for three weeks in 1953. Her Majesty gets that once in a meeting and then 'ma'am' after that.

Are you guys sure you didn't just invent a new kind of royalty? :-)

If I met our PM, I would just call him 'Mr Howard' and he'd be happy.

We don't need to worry about that here, Aussie. Our royalty have enough money that they don't really have to mix with us common folk when they retire.

Screw the Queen? Why does that sound familier? Oh ya....
