Now watch Harry Reid basically lie to CNN via this video at Hot Air, using that predicted short-term result to negate the statements from General Patraeus, the commander on the ground in Iraq.

This is shameful behavior. Reid does indeed have blood on his hands. And as Jeff at Protein Wisdom points out in follow up to a NY Post item, Reid is performing exactly as would a dummy of the Far Left. He's decided to allow the fringe of his party to pull his strings. Middle America will reject his party in 08 as a result.

Uh... okay, well, lemme guess, if I give my real reasons you will declare them "debunked" and thereby conclude that the only reason I could possibly be opposed to a goddamn war is "ihatebush".

But, okay. Here's a few.

1) No WMDs. And, no, I don't buy that we had to go halfway around the world to confiscate some rusted-out artillery shells full of chlorine gas. You know damn well that the only thing we could possibly give a shit about is nukes. And he didn't have any.
2) Saddam didn't work with Al Qaeda, and even if he did, it's really tough to imagining him handing over his precious nuclear arsenal to religious fanatics.
3) Iraq is a sham. There aren't many good examples of countries that European empires drew up on a map. There are a lot of bad ones. Guess which I think Iraq is.
4) It's Iran's wet dream. Of course, the nudge-nudge-wink-wink counter to this is that we've got troops on Iran's eastern and western borders and carriers (ixnay on the ubmarinesay) in the Gulf and they've gotta be scared shitless.

Which brings me to my #1 objection:

They didn't have the balls to come out and tell us the real reason they wanted to go to war, which were something like...

We want cheap oil and don't care who we have to kill to get it. (Attacking the demand side of the equation, as usual, is verboten.) And sooner or later, well, we'll obviously have to take on the Iranian government, so we'll just set up camp in the undefended shitholes of Iraq and Afghanistan, and it ought to be a small matter to convince the locals to join our grand crusade, after they've seen the peace and prosperity that democracy brought to their formerly war-torn and impoverished nations. And so, Afghan tribesmen from the east and Sunnis and Shiites and Kurds from the west will meet in the middle, shake hands with the pro-Western Iranian students, and they'll overthrow the mullahs together and there will be democracy and whiskey and sexy and $1.25 gas. Because, deep down, every foreigner has an American inside, trying to get out.

Does anyone really think that this plan was simpler and cheaper and more likely to succeed than raising mileage standards?

When this war began I had strong misgivings. The same neocons who were promising us that we would be welcomed in Iraq with cheering crowds and flowers promised Begin and Sharon twenty years ago that Israeli troops would be welcomed into Lebanon with cheering crowds and flowers. They, too, completely failed to understand what they were getting into and so admired themselves that they just took it for granted that everybody would admire them too. Just as they failed to see that the Lebanese Christians never had any intention of becoming Israeli allies (they would rather be engineers in Abu Dhabi than dishwashers in Haifa), so they failed to see that Iraq had no interest whatsoever in any 'pro-Western multiethnic democracy'. You lose the peace when you substitute wishful thinking for a clear understanding of what your 'allies' agenda is and what they are like. Like FDR thinking he could charm Stalin.

It is ridiculous to maintain that the insurgency has no popular support. Isn't the entire point of being a suicide bomber about being a hero to your people ? Isn't it about how everyone will always look up to your parents and how proud they will be ? In a clan based culture you don't go against your blood. You stick with your own. 1. If Giuliani is the GOP nominee, social conservatives will stay home. Now that the Democrats are learning to channel their inner Huey Long and William Jennings Bryan it will put the South into play. Being killed in an al-Qaeda attack is a very, very remote possibility. Having your job offshored or outsourced is a very real possibility. For most people 9/11 is played out and there is no more political capital to be milked from it.

2. Given the rage of the war supporters, this issue will tear the GOP to pieces during its coming wilderness years.
