By the way, the issue of slavery before the "civil war" was not its existence but whether or not it should be expanded into new states. Therefore it is both an issue of slavery and of states rights. Not all of the 13 states that became confederate states seceeded because of any percieved threat to slavery and four slave states did not seceed. Of course niether did DC, but then, it isn't a state. Kinda begs another question. Now that Virginia has apologized for slavery, shouldn't Massachusetts be next? I mean since they were the first colony to legalize slavery, doesn't seem like they should have led the "we're sorry" parade?

FDR did such a lousy job, he won reelection in 1936 and 1940 by landslides. Damn good record for a screwup.

In 1936, Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected in a landslide victory. He carried 46 out of 48 states, losing only Maine and Vermont. His popular vote victory was the largest up to that time, and is still one of the largest popular vote majorities ever. Yet, his victory was a surprise to many and had some interesting results.

In 1949, he again won in a landslide, beating Wilkie 449 to 82 in the electoral college.

As for the depression, GDP which had fallen for the previous four years started going back up shortly after Roosevelt was elected, largely in response to his economic initiatives.

As for the concentration camps, it was Roosevelt that lead us into war and defeated the Nazis. If it had been left up to the Republicans at the time, we'd have left England and Europe to fend from themselves. Wilkie ran on an isolationist platform and warned the electing Roosevelt would lead to war.
