No Justice At Duke

Well, ... there you have it. Outrageous!!

April 10, 2007 — The office of Attorney General Roy Cooper will announce that he is dismissing all charges against three Duke Lacrosse players, ABC News has learned from sources close to the case. The reasons that will be cited for the dismissal are not yet known.

Damn it. Let's re-visit some facts. The three students are male, white and of middle to upper middle class backgrounds. Since when does someone need more information than that to prosecute, Huh? How on earth are poor and oppressed people supposed to believe there is any justice in America at all if we don't pluck up the occasional well off white male and nail his ass to a cross?

It's a sad day in America when innocent white males get to just walk away almost scott free with no more punishment than the ruining of their reputations and having been denounced by the clueless liberal faculty.

Okay, maybe they shouldn't have even been charged under the law. But what in hell does the law have to do with justice in America anymore, anyhow? We can only hope that tonight, somewhere in America an overzealous, politically motivated prosecutor is homing in on another unsuspecting, innocent party in an effort to put this right. I hear those border agents are always ripe for the picking. Perhaps we'll get lucky and they'll grab up another one of them before we wake.

Sleep well, America. And, remember, the law won't stop America from coming after you ... especially if you're well off and white. Sometimes you people just have to pay the price in order for justice to be served.

One incident doesn't really speak to larger systemic problems in higher education concerning class, privilege, and yes, sometimes race. One can speak of an "innocent party" being picked up, but unless you are going to put up some stats or reference something other than the Duke case, this is just a rant.

And don't forget: student loans can be unavailable to people convicted of drug offenses. And that can include possession.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but during the Duke case there were a number of college parties that involved white kids mocking black people. They would dress up as stereotypes and use blackface. The reason I bring this up is that I personally think there is a growing backlash against the black "victim" idea amoung young people. I think this is do in part to the whole lib idea of self esteem. These kids have all that "I feel good about myself" stuff pumped into their heads that they will not just take on this whole white guilt thing anymore.

What it really shows is law enforcement sometimes arrests the wrong guys - probably more often than we think. Luckily for these kids, their case got enough publicity so eventually the truth came out. Not everyone gets their story on Fox, 60 Minutes, every major news and cable outlet, etc. Without all that free publicity, who knows what would have happened.

Oh yeah, if you want to look at what groups are most likely to get charged with crimes they didn't commit, I'll bet it ain't white, upper-class college students going to prestigious universities.

Dan, bad news. Studies have shown that your balls shrink every time you well up, bust out the quivery lip, jut your shaky finger at the big mean libruls and claim victim status. Now, for some conservatives such as Malkin or Coulter, this doesn't matter so much (although I'm not sure about Coulter, come to think of it), but for a guy who writes puppy-adorned love notes to his scrotum, you're clearly at risk.

I love your idea to sue Nifong and the Duke staff, but unfortunately you cannot sue a public official in this instance. However, the egregious way in which this case was handled or should I say mishandled may lead to disciplinary action against Nifong and potentially disbarment!

These high profile cases involving race in any way are the bane of our society because of history. If it is a black defendant or suspect the collective "we" have got to walk on egg shells and be extremely cautious. Conversely if it is a white defendant or suspect there is almost a race to make sure the collective "we" shows intolerance for the crime and the suspect to the point where it truly has become a case of "guilty until proven innocent". Factor in a public official running a campaign or popularity contest and the truth will be muddy at best!

The only people hurt by all this is ALL OF US!!

TRUE victims of race or racially motivated crime, TRUE victims of rape, TRUE victims of any crime for that matter are less likely to treated properly and ultimately the justice system fails!

The only resolution to all of this is a true equality. If blacks are simply given the benefit of the doubt because of past inequality yet we rush to judgment on whites and almost convict them the moment there is any suspicion are we really exhibiting equality?

The so-called professors, I think someone called them scumbags, but that is too much of a compliment. A sad example of discrimination of whites by blacks, but an even sadder example of a real scumbag that would and did do anything for a vote. He should be charged as well as disbarred. For a year now, you've stomped your little feet about "due process" and "presumption of innocence", etc..

But when it comes to the people who've been locked up at Gitmo for years, with no trial, no charges, unable to see the evidence against them, unable to petition for their own defense, not able to afford or even obtain the kind of legal representation the Duke Boys graciously thanked their parents for being able to afford, you have the complete opposite response. No, for those people, you presume guilt, without question, and advocate the torture (though you wink and snicker at the definition of the word) of the detainees. You know because the government wouldn't make a mistake about who to detain. And you accuse everyone who questions your surety of "hating America".

So, tell me, honorable defenders of justice: If the Duke frat boys had been waterboarded, forced to stand for days at a time in the cold, would you have snickered and mocked them for not being able to handle a little fraternity hazing? If they had been locked in a prison for three years without trial, charges or public evidence, would you just *know* they were guilty anyway?

It's like you have multiple standards of justice. Actually, it's like you have absolutely no standard of justice. It's like you're a bunch of cowards who can't even stand up for this country's most basic ideals - you want to quiver and shake and run as fast as you can to practices that we associate with the darkest despots of history. You have no faith in Justice, and you run from the responsibility it imposes on the accusers - you convict first, then punish and applaud, as long as it's not a rich white boy on the receiving end.

The phrase is "And Justice For All", not "And Justice To Whom I Deem Worthy".

You're pathetic, craven, weak. You don't love America. No, you fear what it stands for, and run from the duty its ideals demand.
