Update: This could be related: Virginia area - but it looks as if it was recovered. It was abandoned in a business district in DC.
Delta fuel truck loaded with 1,700 gallons of home heating oil was stolen sometime Monday night into Tuesday morning from a company in Petersburg.
"The guys started coming in at 6:30 Tuesday morning. They realized one of our trucks was missing, our newest and nicest one," says President Chip Holt of Delta Oil.
He also showed 8News where the lock had been cut by the crooks who made off with the truck, which was 'fuelly loaded' by employees before closing Monday night.
The fuel is used primarily for furnaces and for heating homes, although Petersburg police quickly contacted State Police and Homeland Security. If combined with the right chemicals the fuel could have been turned into a bomb, although FBI does not believe the truck was ever going to be used as a terrorist device.
The empty truck was found yesterday after it was ditched in a business district in Northeast Washington.
Holt tells 8News that he thinks the $4,000 worth of oil ended up in the crooks furnaces. "We'll continue to see if there's reasonable ways to do something to prevent this from happening in the future...but then again...the first and only time something has ever happened...there might be a whole lot you need to do."

Fox TV broke in with an announcement of Homeland Security concerns over a possible attack in DC due to three missing tanker trucks filled with gasoline. It was stated that where one truck was abandoned gave them significant concern.
Nothing on the wires at this time.

Let me be the first to predict that this will all come to nothing. No planned terrorist attack.

Wow. I didn't know this until I just read it. All this time I could have been getting all riled up.
Let's hope, Nowinger. This is close to me. I have to agree with you, though. With prices of heating oil and gasoline, it was only a matter of time before someone got the bright idea of stealing truckloads of it to sell for crack.

You aren't going to like this, but I believe the wingers WANT another terrorist attack to occur. Another terrorist attack will validate their worldview and hate of muslims. Another terrorist attack will quash the uprising against Bush's draconian policies we're seeing. The neocons openly admitted they needed another Pearl Harbor to get their agenda into action, I don't know why it surprises anyone that people wonder if they didn't know 9/11 was coming in advance. I don't believe that, but given what they were on record as saying, it isn't surprising many do.

Buzzy, What happened in OKC was about FBI abuses under Clinton so it wasn't a terrorist attack because it is ok to attack our own government.Just remember that making you take off your shoes at Will Rogers airport is worse than shooting a mother in the face while she holds her (assault) baby and as long as we're driving tanks over the bodies of "religious fanatics" it's alright. Unfortunately a lot of good people in one of this country's nicest cities had to suffer.

You can go to any port with a fist full of cash and have them direct deliver orders of around 2,000gal. I was thinking of putting in a large bank of oil tanks at one of the apt building I own so I could do this. Buying directly from the port saves about $.60/gal.

Lifelong Democrat, just like Oswald. And Whirledpeas McVeigh's unhappiness with the government had little to do with any sort of Christian beliefs or grievance, he was a self proclaimed atheist and also held a grudge against the Bush41 administration over the Randy Weaver case / killings by the FBI. Huh, Oswald was an atheist too. For some strange reason the media would like to paint both as far right wing gun nuts and / or Christian extremists but that isn't the case at all.
Posted by: Buzzy | Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 05:57 PM
Buzzy: Weaver= shooting his wife in the face by Hirouchi (sp?) over a shotgun barrel the width of a saw blade too short.
Religious fanatics= Waco where Janet Reno's tanks killed 80 odd children in order to save them.
McVeighs issues w/ the govt went far deeper and Jones couldn't get much for him. I knew Steven when I lived in Enid and if one must risk their life with an appointed, ACLU member, he got a damned good one.

Seems obsessed with murder and murderers too. Probably here's voices everytime he passes the columbus monument downtown........."kill whitey, kill whitey"

Speaking of farming, calving has been going rather well this year, none lost so far and eveyone has mothered up. That means no bottle feeding this year.
Now back to the topic at hand. Can you imagine how many good sized car bombs you could make with 4,000 gallons of fuel. If they wanted to they could start putting togehter enough for several large attacks. Does anyone know how much fuel Tim M. used in the Ok. City bombing? My guess is less than 4,000. He was using a mixture of desil fuel and fertilzer in 50 gallon barrels in a Ryder truck. If this is going to be used for terrorism get ready for a big attack.
Posted by: southdakotaboy | Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 07:42 PM
Dakota; that's good news if you've a decent heard. April seems early, isn't still snowing up there? What breed are you running?
Gas would not make as good a nitrogen/fuel mix bomb as diesel or heavier oil, evaporates too quickly, would still make one hell of a molotov (or many) Mixed with gelatin you have napalm. It isn't a problem though, there are no such thing as terrorists.

vetter, dude don't make assumptions about tokenism. You are not necessarily alone here. And bob seems to have little else to do but throw insults to the blogosphere so I bet he's got a big old, bedsore ridden fat ass. I'm sure you have better taste.

So if the next guy writes in his Wiki bio that he was a Democrat you gonna believe that too. Wish there was a big laughing smiley to post right now. Keep it up Bob, you're the poster child for the new left.
McVeigh's bomb had a total weight of 3,000 to 4,500 lbs (depending on the source) and ANFO is usually mixed at about 50% ratio (sometimes less or more)diesel to ammonia nitrate. The ratio changes depending on if you have explosive grade AN or farm quality AN. Heating oil is similiar but not the same as regular diesel oil, more like the thinner "extreme cold" diesel but should work pretty much the same. It's also been told that he used some race car fuel (nitromethane) and had some acetylene tanks in the truck.

Well imaginwhirledpeas we run about 150 cow calf pairs. We have mostly angus saler crosses, but back in the late 80's early 90's my Dad and I switched to some Longhorn bulls for awhile. We had a great time calving (didn't have to pull more than one or two a year), but htey didn't put on much weight. Saler bulls are better overall I think.

SDB,
My ex is a veterinarian. I used to go on calls with him all the time, and before they quit the equine practice, I used to go out on horse calls with him, ..... sometimes, in an emergency when people couldn't get their bovine vet, we'd go help with a difficult delivery. I was fine with all the stuff until once. A cow could not get her calve out so my ex and a couple of guys hooked the calf's legs up to a chain and pulled it out with a tractor. I fainted dead away. :)
I'll tell you what - I have so much admiration for you guys. Raising cattle, having a dairy herd, it is hard, hard work. And you don't expect to go flying off for a nice two-week vacation once a year. shew! My hat is off to you.
Posted by: Phoenix | Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 11:00 PM
Well I and my Dad both thankyou Phoenix. Just to note we raise beef cattle not Dairy. To tell you the truth in many ways Dairy cattle are harder work then range cattle. Not only do you have to worry about calving but you also have to milk them twice a day.
As far as the weather is up here we have been getting snow but its not to bad if you can keep the cattle out of deep mud or pools of standing water. Drainage is key to a good set of calving yards.
Posted by: southdakotaboy | Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 11:07 PM
SDB,
You are right about dairy farmers. We once lived in an old farmhouse that abutted a very small dairy farm. The barnyard where the cows homed in on the range was small and separated from our yard by a nice wooden fence. Every day, twice a day, I’d hear a yalp and the cows would mosey into the barn for milking. We had a German shepard, Brandy, that was the greatest dog ever. She’d flop out on the back porch and watch the cows every day and never did she do anything but look. We had faith she’d never do a thing. One spring evening, I got out of the shower, went in the bedroom and looked out the window to note the cows coming out of the barn all frisky and light with slack bags swinging. I bent over to blow-dry my hair and heard faint barking but paid it no mind as I continued to dry my hair. Just as I stood upright and turned off the dryer, I saw the last of the herd scrambling willy-nilly back into the barn. Then I saw to my horror the farmer storming my way with a huge stick in his hand. Brandy was going nuts. I went nuts as I grabbed the first thing handy to put on - which happened to be a really short dress and ran downstairs as fast as I could. I yanked open the back door just as Brandy was getting ready to go for the throat of this furious farmer, and suddenly everything stopped as if in a movie time warp. There I was with my shoulder-length hair standing straight UP and with this little tiny dress on and nothing else. Brandy stopped immediately and came wagging her tail, the farmer nearly choked, and I got embarrassed.
It seems the cows got a little frisky with the spring air and that made Brandy get a little frisky and she charged them. She didn’t go past the fence, but the cows flipped out and went helter skelter, milk bags a’swinging right back into the barn. The cows scared the farmer who was in there cleaning up. He came for blood and got me - a wild woman trying to keep her happy dog from lifting her short dress to show herself to the old guy. And my hair.... oh man... Too funny. I’m not sure we said much, but we watched Brandy carefully after that. I know Brandy had fun. She was thinking...’Damn, I’m so lazy. I think I’ll go scare the crap out of those cows.’

--but I believe the wingers WANT another terrorist attack to occur...
NW,
Do you therefore concede that the dems favor disaster in Iraq to validate their worldview? The same logic applies, the tactics are similar. Aren't you merely picking the conspiracy theory that confirms your own worldview?
Us wingers are nowhere near as diabolical as your spin doctors want you to believe. Think for yourself, man.

That is funny Phoenix. Most of my funny stories involving cows or bulls mostly wind up with me either getting kicked or chased after. I don't think their that funny, but my buddies tend to laugh when they find out how I got hurt. We are kind of a tough bunch out here and our humor tends to be abit on the gallows side.
Posted by: southdakotaboy | Sunday, April 15, 2007 at 04:03 AM
Dakota, I imagine you'll have good luck w/ the angus/salers. The longhorn is a tough old cow that was bred for hardiness but as beef goes they aren't very heavy. Folks raise a lot of angus around me these days. I'd like to have a couple longhorns for the novelty though.

"My ex is a veterinarian. I used to go on calls with him all the time, and before they quit the equine practice, I used to go out on horse calls with him,"

SDB, I have a great weakness for beef. Next time I have some I'll say a silent thanks for all your hard work. Now as for the Boob, his masturbation machine must have rusted up on him. Probably doesn't know he's supposed to clean it once in a while. He's very very cranky. Or he must be reading that the surge is starting to show some results even though it has just begun. Poor old sod. Wank on slug.

Yes the old Klansmaninstamford is just going nuts. I expect that the Dems are going to get desperate to get things derailed. My guess is that they will do as much as they can to disrupt the functioning of the Armed Forces as they think they can get away with. This is the point were they could overeach and stumble badly. I hope the Dems shoot themsevles in the foot very, very publicly.

I think you patriots are doing a fine enough job derailing things on your own.

God BLESS the SURGE!!! Its WORKING!!!!!
Posted by: BobInStamford | Sunday, April 15, 2007 at 12:09 PM
Well anyone can make things look bad if you just focus on one detail. Yes the bombings were bad,but bob how do explain away the fact that the overall death toll in Iraq is down by 45%. Think about that bob, thats almost half as many people are dead. Now what is different then what was going on before? Thats right bob the surge is in progress.
Posted by: southdakotaboy | Sunday, April 15, 2007 at 12:29 PM
You know SDB, I was reading a comment on one of the blogs by a guy named Wu. He made a very interesting point that I'm sure the Boob would like to contemplate. What we have been seeing in Iraq the last year or so was a "surge" by al Qaeda. This surge has failed so badly that they have basically been reduced to only one weapon, the suicide bomber. Surge on Bin Laddie.
Posted by: Fred Beloit | Sunday, April 15, 2007 at 12:36 PM
Thats a great point Fred. When was the last time anyone heard about a police station being overrun by the insurgents and not recaptured? Hell when was the last time that a police station was overrun at all?
I read some where that the average car bomb costs them about 100,000 by the time it is all said and done. How much longer can they keep that up?
Posted by: southdakotaboy | Sunday, April 15, 2007 at 12:44 PM
Here is a fun idea, we need to make predictions as to how the Dems will try to spin things at the end of the summer when the surge is working? What will they start to say? What will they begin to do to get on board with things?
My personal guess is that they will claim that it was their hard pressure on Bush and the Iraqi government that was the true reason for success. Look for lots of press conferences and lots of stories on the MSM about how things are getting better with lots of compliments to the Dems for forcing change on the Bush Administration.
Also look for a complete absence of the anti war left on the news. No more code pink etc...
Posted by: southdakotaboy | Sunday, April 15, 2007 at 12:50 PM
"Al Qaeda and Taliban Terrorists Facing Defeat" by NYT's Frank Rich. "It is increasingly clear that Al Qaeda in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan are failing in their efforts to drive the Coalition out of the two countries. All of the savage and desperate attacks the terrorists have mounted have completely failed in stopping the success of the two new democratic governments in the region. The only questions remaining are what date and in what manner the terrorists will choose to finally surrender or retreat into the hills or deserts." This should be a story in the news. That it isn't demonstrates the anti-American bias of our own media.
