Fred, I'll have to disagree about the univeral health care. I had to take my elderly mother to the emergency room a few weeks ago, and even though she was in severe pain, we had to wait two hours for all the Mexicans involved in car wrecks, or having pregnancy checkups, or victims of assaults, to clear the way so us taxpayers picking up the bill for all of them could get our turn. I think the care of all these people was either paid for by the government, or else the hospital will have to eat the costs, which means mine and your insurance will continue to go up. Just so these folks can get their routine treatment in most cases for free.

This might have something to do with them coming here. Yeah, we lured them with hospitals, and schools, and roads, and cars, etc., in other words, with civilization.

I agree with Geraldo that Bill used this to have a 'special' screaming episode. Not that Geraldo pointed that out, but the issue here is not illegal immigration. It was drunk driving. Bill screamed Geraldo to the point that I was hoping Geraldo would slap him.

This should be the metric: If the drunk driver was Polish, would it have made news?

If Bill is going to crusade against illegal Mexicans committing crimes , stick to that and cover every story that involves those qualifiers. But don't use this one horrible tragedy to score talking points that don't work because the fact that the guy was illegal did not make him drive drunk.

I could not believe my eyes when Bill interviewed the father of the girl on the day of her funeral and brought up the illegal status of the driver. As if that might help the father's grief. And then Bill hammered the poor guy on what he was going to do about making Virginia Beach a non-sanctuary city. People have lost their minds.

Regardless of how far our standards have fallen under Bush the Lesser, to wit, presuming people guilty, torturing and abusing them, spying on innocent Americans without warrants, destroying the checks and balances put into place by the Constitution and spending endless millions? billions on preventing Steve and Joe from getting married and forcing women who don't want babies to have them....we are still the best opportunity on the planet for a person to better himself. Our worst slum would count as middle class in a large swath of third world. Mexico sucks. Saudi Arabia sucks unless you're a prince or friend of prince. China sucks. A good part of the world totally sucks and unless you are born into wealth you have little chance of acquiring it, let alone any freedom. Again, you don't understand that criticizing American for not living up to OUR OWN STANDARDS doesn't mean I don't understand and appreciate how high those standards are. The beauty of American society at its best is what makes the wingers and their worldview such a travesty and what Bush has done to this country such a crime.

This wasn't the first time this person was caught driving drunk....he was caught twice before and because of their policy of not reporting illegals to the Feds these girls are dead....if they reported him, he would have been deported and they would be alive.

So being an illegal made a huge difference in this case.

I think if this back-and-forth were put to the standards of logic in a debate forum, it would deconstruct. For instance, what if the guy was a regular town drunk? Or what if he were a legal Hispanic citizen? In each case, he would still be on the streets.

The emotionality of the story was crucial to Bill using it as he did. What if two illegal Hispanic teenage girls had been killed by a white guy who had two previous DUI's? That's my point - it's all chance and what-if's that don't lend themselves to cause and effect in this argument. I saw the other set of parents on TV tonight. I do not understand for the life of me how parents who have just been through something like this can get on TV and talk. I'd have to be sedated for a week.

I also think any city offering sanctuary status should be denied federal funds for anything. This whole mess disgusts me. But I cannot say that Bill was right in exploiting this accident. If anything, the town should feel deep shame, but that's going right back to the emotionality of it and avoiding the fact that every town has plenty of repeat-offender drunk drivers. I hate every aspect of this story and the microcosm it represents for several huge issues, but it still boils down to a drunk-driving accident. If solving drunk-driving fatalities in this country meant getting Mexican illegals back across the border, I bet we'd not have an illegal in the country once MADD got involved.
