Of course Harpers and Unthinking Progress would see this as a former President being told to heel. They are liberal and mustn't allow logic or reason to interfere with their ideological mental illness. Jimmy Carter doesn't get to set foreign policy anymore, thank God. It isn't like he didn't make enough of a mess with it in his four fetid years.
Carter and his foolish supporters think they are so right about everything, they can't even comprehend how sending the wrong message to Assad would only make things worse. Not only did Bush have the right to tell Carter to sit down and STFU, he had a responsibility to do so. In fact, what they should do is bump Carter's meds just a touch more so we would never have to listen to him again.
President Carter: Bush Ordered Me Not to Go to Damascus
More evidence of the White House's partisan manipulation of relations with Syria emerged yesterday, as President Jimmy Carter told a gathering in New York about his recent request to visit Syrian President Assad. The former president stated:
“I have known President Bashar al-Assad since he was a college student, and I thought it might be helpful if I went and urged him to support the peace process in the Middle East. But for the only time in my life as a former president, I was ordered by the White House not to go.”

Even if he is being told to "heel"; so what? As you said; he's not the President anymore. He doesn't get to set foreign policy, and, by sticking his nose where it doesn't belog he's hurting the country not helping it.

Jimmy C eff-ed up Korea big-time when he went there despite Billy Jeff's orders in '93 and negotiated a treaty that subsequently saw Dear Leader take the money and do nothing. Balloon-woman Albright waddled over later to proclaim Bj's successful diplomacy, but the Dems are not grown-up enough to conduct any real foreign policy, especially if it takes intestinal fortitude and guts, which they are lacking.

Assad's idea of how the peace process works is to blow your political opponents to pieces...like Hariri.
Syria believes in a "pieces process", not a peace process.

vetter, they are probably all devout Christians paying tribute to and glorifying the resurrection. Either that or they are hatching plans to initiate socialized medicine, retreat "over the horizon" of Iraq, and nationalize industry.

I appreciate how after 6 years of consistant clusterfucks in the Middle East, Republicans still have the balls to start talking about the pros and cons over other Presidents.
But you're the same whine-o's who called the British pussies for not shooting their way out of Tehran Jack Bauer style and bemoaned the fall of the British Empire because Tony Blair didn't convulsively start slapping the nuclear button a week ago.
So yeah, Carter was an absolutely horrible President compared to George "Mission Accomplished" Bush.

right *again*, ziffy! wow: that's twice in one week.
carter is, in fact, the worst president of the 20th century; and tied with buchanan for the "worst ever" crown.
next to those 2, everybody else doesn't look so bad all of a sudden. harding, fdr, lbj, nixon....those dudes look downright competent next to poor stupid jimmuh.

"But you're the same whine-o's who called the British pussies for not shooting their way out of Tehran Jack Bauer style ..."
But they didn't object to being taken to Teheran. They just lay down pussy style and enjoyed it, going by the grins on their faces in the Telegraph's pics.
By the way it was bad enough Pelosi screwing Lebanon by telling the dorktator that the road to peace in Lebanon goes through Syria. The Syrians didn't make a big enough mess before the "Cedars Revolution" apart from killing off Lebanese politicians like in a turkey shoot. Goodness only knows what the dhimmacrat would have said.
