al-Sadr Rises On Easter

al-Sadr is said to be telling his supporters to concentrate their attacks on Americans. Captain Ed reads this a little differently than I do.

Moqtada al-Sadr has decided to finally acknowledge that the surge strategy in Baghdad will undermine the basis of his power in Iraq, and has ordered the Mahdi Army to resist American and Iraqi forces trying to put him out of business.

From what I read, the message said nothing of resisting Iraqi forces, it called on Iraqi forces to abandon the US. It appears al-Sadr is concerned over the cooperation he's been seeing and is trying to divide and conquer, making this Iraq versus the US.

It's not clear just how much power al-Sadr retains, so it's hard to interpret what may result. My concern is that al-qaeda and al-Sadr will focus on killing Americans in an effort to shorten the campaign through influencing the American public and helping the Democrats. How sad that a major political party repeatedly sides with our worst enemies these days.

The lesson needed may come from Sunni portions of Iraq where Sunni groups have started fighting with Sunni al-Qaeda as they came to deplore their pure terrorism. Hopefully enough Iraqis will grow tired of this violence so as to turn on al-Sadr. That would be the tipping point for this war. But with Democrats underrmining the effort here at home, I can't rule out the possibility this could tip the other way.

The foreseeable future for Iraq may be decided within the next four to six months. Perhaps Al-Sadr has figured it the same way and opted to go all in.

Let's hope for the best for our efforts and especially for our troops this Easter Day.
