Of course, Easter does bring out the compassion in me, so I'm against splitting up families. So, gather up their progeny, their papas, or mommas and mommasitas and ship them back, too. Our legal immigration numbers are too high as it is, though I support legal immigration and we should welcome in, or even back any law abiding solid would be citizens through official channels. But until then, they are just so many lawbreakers, lock them up and ship them out.

Many were angry about a White House plan that would grant illegal immigrants work visas but require them to return home to apply for U.S. residency and pay a $10,000 fine.

"Charging that much, Bush is going to be even more expensive than the coyotes," said protester Armando Garcia, 50, referring to smugglers who transport people across the Mexican border.

Here's a clue Armando, sit your ass down in the middle of the Mexican desert and eat coyote meat for awhile until your paperwork is done. LOL, in South Central Los Angeles there is a shortage of emergency healthcare due to illegal mexican immigrants using emergency rooms for primary care. The hospitals are required to furnish free emergency room care. What happens? The facilities close their E-rooms, resulting in paramedic response times exceeding survival windows for many trauma and cardiac patients. I believe about half of the emergency rooms in South Central have closed during the past few years due to severe overburdens on the health care system by mexican illegals.

I'm aware of the 2000 / 2001 LAFANS study quoted most often in a fairly sketchy Rand Group paper on the subject. It was no more than a series of self report type interviews of some 2400 illegals in LA. This is the only study to this point that I'm aware of.

Please provide some links to these "lots of studies", I'd be interested in looking at them.

That is one of the classic conservative blind-spots in regards to the US Constitution. Somehow civil rights and "all men are created equal" stopped applying to non-citizens when it became politically inconvinent. Not that Bush has been overly staunch about upholding the civil rights of actual citizens. But, yes, non-citizens do have "rights". The non-citizen is still protected by habeus corpus. He has all his first amendment rights intact - you can't arrest a Mexican national for speaking ill of the President any more than you can arrest an America. You can't drag a non-citizen up before a military tribunal or convict him of violation of US law without due process. All the rules are generally intact.

So yes, non-citizens have civil rights within the US legal system. That Bush has begun stripping non-citizens (and citizens, like Jose Padilla) of their rights has been viewed as a serious offense both inside and outside the nation.
