"Oh well, all in a day's fun."

And now we all know what you do with your mother on a fun day.

"Climate change is happening, but it appears that science is split on what to do about it."

Fucking amazing stuff.

Let's see:

Snow: get a shovel
Rain: get an umbrella
Hot: A/C, go to the beach
Cold: jacket, burn fossil fuels

Why is the left so fucking ridiculous sometimes...I'm glad I am not a fellow traveler anymore with their mushbrained vomit on "climate change" and BushMcHitlerburton...

"Climate change"...the new words with shifting meaning used by the left to beat businessmen over the head with

You have been attacking their heroes-the Gorical, Wilson, and Plame. Global Warming isn't the only part of their religion.

Amazing, when you pull off all the shiny stuff it actually says "when all your scientific facts are proven flaky make up new ones and call them post normal scientific facts".

I vote for a giant sun shade over the earth. Maybe one of those "Sunsetter" things with the electric motor to spread it out in the summer and back in the winter. Screw the southern hemisphere (Guys on the team pointed out the differing seasons there so I had to resort to post normal problem solving). Ok, so now they point out that we really like the Aussies a lot so now the plan is to live underground. Sheesh, but anyway this post normal science is fun.

This is the nonsense they talk about when they say Conservatives have "rigid" minds and are "cold".

That indicates liberals have soft brains and are bad at science. I doubt even liberal scientists, honest ones, would go with this theory of non-rigorous conclusions.

WTF? I read the article by Hulme. He is debunking a book released by two scientists about global warming that contradicts other studies and is explaining why this happens. His reference to post-normal science is to the book he is discrediting because the others used post-normal science without disclosing that they did. He is describing the phenomenon of how the scientific discovery process changes perceptions over time and how science can be corrupted when it rubs up against society, power and people. He is lamenting the fact that the super-funded get to do bad science and get heard by politicos while good science is tossed aside. He explains it as being a function of scientists wanting money for their studies and to feed themselves. The book he is criticizing for starting with an easily de-bunked hypothesis is a right wing con job on global warming. He is lamenting that scientists with obvious conflicts that do not report to their readers get to write bad science books! Not surprised you would use an article that completely undermines the position you are taking as proof of your position. Not all of us who read Mr. Hulmes article are incapable of understanding it. You obviously are.

Horray! An Al Gore thread!
Man, posting these for Dan is like needing to pee for anyone else.

Well Zif, you need to go number two because you are full of it.

I knew it.

"Reminds me a little of the 20th century, when post-normality as a guiding principle had not yet been adopted by science but was highly popular with social philosophers/activists such as Adolf Hitler, Mao Tse Tung, Joseph Stalin and others."

Global Warming = Mass Murderers, check

"It speaks truth to power from the barrel of a gun, or the funding mechanism of a university, or the regulatory bodies of a government, what have you."

[Liberal] Universities and Guberment Regulators want to keep you down, check.

"In fact, almost all applications of postmodern philosophy (for that is what this crazy theory is called)--from art criticism to politics; and psychology from philosophy and rhetoric to science--result in a pervasive blurring and distortion of reality, rather than in its understanding."

Don't trust intellectuals cause they're all crazy, check.

"Have you ever wondered why the political left is so relentlessly hostile to Christianity and Judaism? The answer is simple—they are in competition with these religions for the hearts of the people."

Global Warming, and science in general, is actually just another religion. And its a religion that hates you for your Jesus. Check.

"The cornerstone of propaganda is the "big lie". (A number of sources, including Wikipedia, attribute this technique to Adolph Hitler. Which is odd, because it was actually in use well before Hitler. The Soviet Union used it repeatedly. Maybe Hitler was the first one to give it that particular name.) Well, a Danish scientist has just gone on the record exposing "global warming" as a complete myth. If he's correct, global warming may be the single biggest lie in the history of the big lie."

There's more of that 'Global Warming Nazis!' rhetoric again.

Yup, you've got it all in here Dan. Mike Hulme starts talking meta, and the entire global warming community takes one man's assertion as damning proof against 30 years of accumulated science.

You can't talk the world out of GW, guys. This is not a game of Mexican Stand-off, where, if everyone just stays cool and walks away the problem will disappear. This isn't a war between science and right-wing ideology or science and Christianity. Or science and capitalism.

But Dan needs to get off on his word-games, so I honestly don't even know why I'm bothering.

Here. Have a funny picture of the President of Iran and run along.

I predict another Dan post on the evils of the polar bear is coming soon.

The conservative has long had a wonderful relationship with science. What with Coulter, Falwell, Robertson, and Bush's view on evolution, they are certainly the movement to trust on climate science too!

Gore talks about global warming, but what science issues to Republican politicians bring to the table?

Hmmm yeah

Bonus points: Hard Right's "Gorical" Ha, functional literacy strikes again! I guess puns are too high brow for you to handle.

Concerning "science" :

"...keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen." (1 Timothy 6:20, KJV)

Man's science is at best, a guessing game based upon a few hard facts, and much speculation. Most science rarely uses words like "will surely cause..." or "definitely results in..."; rather preferring hypotheticalisms like "may lead to..." or "could result in..."

Man's best wisdom is but pure stupidity before the "foolishness of God".

Man is so foolish in fact, so as to make the claim that God does not exist. But indeed!

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." (Galations 6:7, KJV)

Post normal science == predetermined outcomes

Here, Dan. Have a head explosion.

"Former U.S. Vice President and environment crusader Al Gore still has some pull in Washington, D.C. — getting a venue for a rock concert.

The former Democratic presidential candidate had wanted to highlight the need to address global warming by staging one of seven worldwide "Live Earth" concerts on the National Mall in the U.S. capital on July 7.

But two events already are scheduled for that day on the Mall so Gore reached out to a close friend in Congress, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to use the front lawn of the Capitol — albeit a much smaller area.

Reid of Nevada and Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine have introduced a resolution in the Senate offering the Capitol grounds for the event. It would also have to pass the U.S. House of Representatives."

The left should realize that "post normal" science is a very two edged sword because it is only used when you want science to follow the polls and either side can use it. So excuse me while I sit back and wait till the enviro left wakes up to see the air and water are dirtier but Gore got rich on carbon offsets. A few are already stirring so it shouldn't take too long.

"Self-evidently dangerous climate change will not emerge from a normal scientific process of truth seeking, although science will gain some insights into the question if it recognises the socially contingent dimensions of a post-normal science."

Sounds to me like this guy is an advocate of the new non-ridig, non-accurate mode of scientific inquiry.

All that stuff about learning equations and the prime mover for a scientist being thorough understanding should be tossed out the window then...

Zif says "...thirty years of accumulated science..." back up the man-caused global warming threat. You know why he uses thirty years as the magic period? Because thirty-one years ago the "accumulated science" of climatology was backing up global cooling.

I agree with Purp. Post normal science is another way of saying post normal mathematics, post normal physics, post normal quantum mechanics, post normal logic. A most amusing, nay, a most laughable concept.

"post normal mathematics"

I do not think this means what you think it means.

Well, I googled post normal mathematics and got "The Post-Normal Times" a greens web publication apparently in business to promote post normal science, i.e., pseudo science. Is that what you mean, Zif?
