Thank you for the link Dan.
Something that I have understood from the beginning of this war, we are our brothers keepers. No, I cannot begin to understand the savage violence the people in the middle east live with each and every day, I can and do believe we should try and change that, regardless of political party lines.

I agree, Cindi. I felt like crying with Ms.Hess. Just think how many generations are going to have to pass before the trauma of this violence begins to fade - for the Iraqis as well as our soldiers who have seen the worst. And, no doubt, for those who have covered this war and seen what they soon realize will never be shown - for political reasons!
It's strange, but in all the reporting and in all the video images of this war and its concomitant savagery, what brought me to tears was when I watched the Iraqis lined up for hours to vote for the first time. All I could think was how in the world could any human ever think that it is okay to allow fellow human beings live oppressed lives without the freedoms and liberties we take for granted. I still cannot believe people think abandoning Iraq is the right thing to do.
The conviction that other people can suffer and flourish as each of us does is the essence of empathy. Empathy is the foundation of morality, and if we leave these people to suffer - their probable fate at the hands of savages - we are committing an immoral act. How easy it is for some to skip over the human nature aspect of conflict in pursuit of personal gain.
I'm so glad Pamela Hess put the human nature back into the picture.
