What I'd like to know is how an Iranian official came to see it - advance copy? ha
An Iranian official on Sunday lashed out at the Hollywood movie "300" for insulting the Persian civilization, local Fars News Agency reported.
Javad Shamqadri, an art advisor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accused the new movie of being "part of a comprehensive U.S. psychological war aimed at Iranian culture", said the report.
Shamqadri was quoted as saying "following the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Hollywood and cultural authorities in the U.S. initiated studies to figure out how to attack Iranian culture," adding "certainly, the recent movie is a product of such studies."

"part of a comprehensive U.S. psychological war aimed at Iranian culture"
Oh, I am so going to go see this movie and then I'll actually buy the DVD (maybe 2 copies just for the heck of it).

I must go see it if it pisses the Iranians off.

Well, if it wasn't part of a comprehensive U.S. psychological war aimed at Iranian culture, it is now.
The promoters are probably drunk on champagne at this unexpected ad for their flick.

GW could learn from the Spartans.

The Iranian government thinks the movie industry is a tool of the U.S. Administration? And we think our intel about them isn't too good.

I guess they don't like Xerxes. He/it was creepy.

Ahmadinejad is genuinely creepy. I read they may have overdone it with Xerxes.

The Iranians should have learned a lesson from what happened to Xerxes, and this movie should serve to remind them, just in case they decide to try something like that again. The results could be worse for them this time.

I appreciate how the Iranian government identifies with a 4000 year old world-conquering empire of slavery, slaughter, and conquest. Nothing says "We're not as bad the movie protrays us" by making the primary complaint "they were just like us but really ugly". Oh, and "the White House is conspiring with Hollywood" was a really side-splitter too.
Seriously, though. Movie kicked ass. Totally going to see it a few more times.

I was going to pass it off as just another "bunch of semi-naked guys hack and slash a bigger buncher of well armed soldiers to bits" movie ala "Troy"... but mebbe I will plunk down my 80 bits and see it as well.

It is worth seeing. It's also worth noting there seemed to be an abundance of gyms back then as every adult male Spartan looks like an amateur body builder.

"GW could learn from the Spartans"
Oh yes he could...

"insulting the Persian civilization"
That would be the one that Islam destroyed to and then claimed credit for right?
Like with most agricultural empires, the truth about the Persians is likely not black and white. These empires tend to bring some level of rule of law and make kings less dangerous and bring the benefits of a central military and other institutions while escalating the degree to which atrocities can be committed. They may be a necessary transitional state in the progress of civilization. They can also have the effect of causing cultures on their borders to unify and strengthen, both through trade with the empire and out of fear of them.
The movie was, of course, a fiction based on a graphic novel based on a Greek myth about a real event. The point of the movie was message and metaphor not history. The message is that freedom is old, it spreads and it is worth defending and fighting for. This is why Iran and the hippies hate it.
It is a great movie too.

Ok even the fact that is a fictionalize version of history...he is still an idiot.

This movie is just another fiction based (to an extend) on true story and nothing more. It's just entertainment and not history.
It makes many Iranians mad because not only Iranians but almost all people in east are very aware of their history and culture. They are very attached to them. They can tell you stories, which are 2000-3000 years old. This is not so in the west. The people here forget what they have been eaten the last couple of days.
No one could say which one is better. That's the way it is. This is the difference between cultures. The important thing is to show respect for each other's history, culture and believes. That's the trick. We all want to change each other. Just accept the way people are. Respect them and leave them alone and then see how they react. If they try to hurt you THEN you can legitimate your actions.
I am sure the director of the movie didn't know this and I don't think that he claims that he has made a historical movie, since obviously he doesn't know much about history.
I say if you know you are going to hurt somebody with your action just don't do it.

a simple search using google with term "xerxes" will result in:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xerxes_I
http://www.iranchamber.com/history/xerxes/xerxes.php
http://www.answers.com/topic/xerxes
also read last half of "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/300_%28film%29"
from "Critical reaction" to the end.
