But I can't resist - it seems the Dixie Clits were the focus of that music industry masturbatory fantasy they call the Grammy Awards. I would have watched, but my toenails were having a growth spurt and it was simply that much more fascinating to watch. That the Police were probably the best thing going tells you something about the state of the music industry today. Not that the Police weren't great in their day - and they're still excellent musicians - but why go on tour when you need another roadie just to carry the hair pieces and rejuvenation cream?
I didn't watch the Grammy awards tonight, but was switching channels around 11 and kept the dial on CBS long enough to see the Dixie Chicks win for song of the year and for album of the year.
And they wonder why the music industry is in trouble.
Yes, the web hurts them badly, but there's more to it than that. See Lorie Byrd for more. And also The American Mind.

"It's nothing new and to say that most artists AVOID political statements is just incorrect."
Kite - 7 bands/artists? You're a long way from "most". Although, I must admit, you left out Britney's "I think we should, like, totally do whatever the President, like, says, and stuff?"
Now THAT'S a political statement!

"Jesus. You guys get stupider with every breath."
"what i do get a kick out of is the monkey poo flinging of the trolls posting in the comments here all day, every day at a site which they proclaim to hate and the people that they insist are not worth arguing with"

Dan,
Grow up, willya? You are so predictable.
Posted by: Bat Guano | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 01:10 PM
The truth is that political commentary has existed in art for most of recorded time (Euripedes anyone?) and will continue to do so. Yes, Kite named 7 but you could name 70 others from the past 20 years if you chose to.

Why Darth Malice, I often wondered where my favorite winger troll wondered off to. Wow Darth, you really have gotten your circuits watered down now haven't you? We often wondered about you. I noticed that an attempt to read your profile at Freeperville revealed that you were banned. Good Gawd buddy, how does a right wing loon get banned there?
BTW, did you ever change your mind about letting your kid enlist in the military? You remember that conversation right? The one where you refused to let your kid enlist because he might end up in the war that you claimed to support? He's American right? So did you let him fight for democracy?
I know you remember me, your favorite MARINE! You know, the one that called you out for the hypocrite you were being? Nice to see that you still think the same. Always good for a laugh! Or not!

This has got to be the single most nauseating attempt at wordplay in the history of the English language. Carrot Top must be rolling in his grave.
Wait, Carrot Top's dead, right? Please say yes.

Really, "clit" is kind of a bizarre insult. "Dixie Tits" would have made more sense if he wanted to call them airheads or something. Or maybe "Dixie Twats" for the classic "Boys haff a penis, an' girls haff a vagina! Man strong and penetrating, woman weak and yielding!" effect.
But "clit"... hmm. Let me put on my Charles Krauthammer hat. Ah! Okay. Dan, like many white Republican males, suspects that he is the victim of a cosmic injustice: a whole lot of people (the ones with clits) have better orgasms than he does! Or at least more of them. Who can blame him, really? That thoroughly unsatisfying 2-minute unlubed jerk to "Anal Bukkake 7" night after night just leaves him feeling dirty, in both the literal and the metaphorical sense, although it does at least help him fall asleep on those nights when he just can't... stop... posting... until the sun starts coming up again. He wonders what it would be like to be... a woman. Yeah, he could masturbate for hours and not feel dead inside afterwards, not even have to grab a towel! He's read about those multiple orgasms.
Lousy luck. Shit, if he were a woman, he probably wouldn't even have to sleep alone. They have it so fucking easy. Them and their goddamn clits...

How about The Dixie Wecked?
Posted by: TheSpartan | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 01:43 PM
Uncivil bigot.
Posted by: feckless | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 02:23 PM
Dixie Clits?
That's the best you can do? What are you, in seventh grade?
Yep, good ol' Dan Riehl and the right . . . all class, all the time.
Posted by: spencer | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 02:36 PM
This couldn't be the same Mr. Riehl who whined about uncivil Mr. Stark was for holding up the,"Hannity sucks ass" sign could it? And you wonder why no rational person takes you seriously Dan?
Posted by: Rob Kaufman | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 02:47 PM
What a stupid fucking idiot you are.
Posted by: dave | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 03:03 PM
The linked Reuters article ("Stars set to party at Grammys while sales slide") typically misses the meat of the problem,
"Every day brings more bad news for the $21 billion industry, which cannot work out how to get fans to pay $18 for a CD instead of stealing music from the Web."
The truth of the matter is that $18 (or $36) CDs would sell, if they were worth the money. The manufactured crap that's offered by much of the recording industry in place of music is often not even worth stealing.

It's amazing the amount of misogynist bile spilt over one little quip:
Just so you know, we're ashamed the President is from Texas.
For this they're given death threats and called whores, bitches, cows, and every four-letter c-word in the book. You people need therapy.
Posted by: tb | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 03:30 PM
Dan, I do believe the commenters have completely abandoned Indymedia and flocked over here. All for a group of girls who sang country music, which they never bought, never listened to, and accused anyone who did buy and listen to it of being rednecks, hillbillies, flat-earthers, and every other two-bit phrase a 3rd grader might find funny.
The hypocrisy meter measuring this liberal response has now gone off the scale.
Posted by: templar knight | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 04:13 PM
Templar, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about, of course. I probably own and listen to more good country music CDs than you can name. I liked the Chicks before they ever spoke one word about our asswipe President.
I await your ill-formed response

I dunno about that, Templar. I fully intend to have a Hem song play at my funeral. Granted, their music is more beautiful and less "we'll put a boot up your ass / it's the American way" but it's country nonetheless. Jenny Lewis is also completely awesome.
Posted by: scarshapedstar | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 04:45 PM
How about the rest of the liberals here, Hayes? Do you take issue with your friends who accuse anyone who listens to country music of being a redneck, flat-earther or inbreed? By the way, what good country music do you listen to and buy?
Posted by: templar knight | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 04:48 PM
Get over it, Dan.
Posted by: katie | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 05:05 PM
Are Conway Twitty, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams Sr. country enough for you? I know a bunch of folkies who play music that is closer to Hank Sr. than most current country music. Your concept of liberal anti-country music bias is about 20 years out of date. Not that this has anything to do with anything.
Posted by: tb | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 05:16 PM
Dixie Clits?
Good to see dan upholding the conservative idea of civil discourse. More proof that the cons not only hate America they hate women also.
Posted by: klyde | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 05:16 PM
Well my favorite homophobic putz I in addition to owning every Dixie Chicks CD since Natalie joined the band I like Brad Paisley, Diamond Rio, Shania, Faith Hill and her hubby the future Senator of Tennessee, Sugarland, The Wreckers, SheDaisy, and even though I dislike their politics I do enjoy hearing Sara Evans sing and even can stomach some of Toby Keith. Nice to see you can be so wrong on a vast range of issues.
Posted by: Rob Kaufman | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 05:17 PM
I'm glad to see you boys are joining us redneck, inbred flat-earthers. Makes me feel good to know you boys are finally seeing the light.
And what the hell is a folkie? And tell me what music they play. I think you must have been with Wille on his Missouri trip, tb.
Posted by: templar knight | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 05:36 PM
Oh. Junior Brown, 'nuff said.
Posted by: scarshapedstar | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 05:37 PM
A folkie plays folk music, duh.
Posted by: tb | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 05:45 PM
And what would you call modern day folk music? Are you referring to bluegrass? I'm trying to figure out what you are listening to.
Posted by: templar knight | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 05:57 PM
Heres how the Dickeee Shits won....(real rules from the grammys)
The only people who are allowed to vote for the Grammy Awards are those who are members of the National Academy of the Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). There are only 15000 members!!!
Members must have worked on six albums (in terms of production, engineering, mixing, or being the recording artist). NARAS members are peers of all who submit their work to the recording Academy. NARAS members are to vote based upon the quality of the work that has been submitted.

I told you the country music I listen to. What's your fucking point, anyway?
Posted by: tb | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 06:14 PM
Gram Parsons, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Merle Haggard, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Emmylou Harris, the Jayhawks, Buck Owens, Hank Williams, Rosanne Cash, Uncle Tupelo, etc. And of course the last five Dixie Chicks releases.
That country enough for you, dumbass?
Posted by: Isaac and Woody Hayes | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 06:19 PM
Curiosity, that's all. Does there have to be a point to everything?
Posted by: templar knight | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 06:21 PM
You're a real conversationist, Hayes. I bet you're proud of your abilities. What a lying little shit you are.
Posted by: templar knight | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 06:26 PM
You said that liberals were "hypocrites" with regards to the Dixie Chicks because we don't listen to country music. Since the last part is false, and one doesn't really follow from the other anyway, I thought you might want to explain yourself further. Can you? Or are you just floating with the vibes, saying whatever the hell you feel like?
Posted by: tb | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 06:37 PM
To go all Dick Cheney on you there, temp: Go fuck yourself.
Posted by: Isaac and Woody Hayes | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 06:37 PM
poor poor temp, you are so misunderstood, you are almost always dead wrong every time you type something. Gee, at least a broken clock is right twice a day so maybe someday you will get something right. By the way I forgot 2 of my favorite bands, Alison Kraus and Union Station & Nickel Creek. Maybe you should stick to topics you have a clue about but I guess we would never see another post from you if you did that.
Posted by: Rob Kaufman | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 06:45 PM
I'm a big fan of Loretta Lynn's last album which was largely ignored by country artists (they don't know what they were missing). And while my favorite artist, Elvis Costello, isn't a country artist per se he has recorded a couple of country albums "Almost Blue" and "Kojak Variety". Willie, Waylon and Patsy also grace my collection.
Posted by: TheSpartan | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 07:10 PM
"Curiosity, that's all. Does there have to be a point to everything?"
Really? I thought the point was that were were defending
"a group of girls who sang country music, which they never bought, never listened to, and accused anyone who did buy and listen to it of being rednecks, hillbillies, flat-earthers, and every other two-bit phrase a 3rd grader might find funny.

So, if we don't listen to country, we're hypocrites.
It turns out that the inverse is not true, though - if we do listen to country, well, that just doesn't matter then.
Do I get to play the hypocrisy card now? :)
Posted by: scarshapedstar | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 07:49 PM
You've never seen a clit, have you?
Posted by: merlallen | Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 08:21 AM
Liberals don't like country music?
My wife, who's been a clogger, line dancer and two-stepper for fifteen years and dances almost exclusively to country, would be exceptionally surprised to hear that.
Posted by: Brian | Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 09:15 AM
I don't know a single liberal who likes country music. If you liberals and your sockpuppets say you like and buy country music, then I am wrong. If, however, you are just lying, then I am right. Probably a little of both, but when I say liberals, there are always a few exceptions. I even met a liberal a few years ago who actually had manners. Doubtful I will ever find another. But I'll keep looking.
Posted by: templar knight | Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 10:43 AM
"templar knight"? Dude, I think you're overcompensating.
I'd like to add to the pile on top of tk's head Johnny Cash, a real lefty man of the people and the kind of guy wingnuts can only wish to be. Because great art doesn't come from fear and hatred.
Also, The Flying Burrito Bros, Waylon, Merle, Kitty Wells, Bob Wills, Bill Kirchen, The Maddox Bros and Rose, Cub Country (check 'em out), Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, Patsy Cline, etc. etc. Notice how many of 'em lean to the left?
I think I'm gonna name my new band The Moonbat Trolls.
Posted by: NoOneYouKnow | Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 03:23 PM
Oh, and "Dixie Clits"? That's sad in so many ways I don't know where to start.
Posted by: NoOneYouKnow | Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 03:25 PM
"I think I'm gonna name my new band The Moonbat Trolls".
Sure couldn't disagree with that name, NOYK. I'll anxiously await your first cd, which should be titled "No one you would want to know".
