But I can't resist - it seems the Dixie Clits were the focus of that music industry masturbatory fantasy they call the Grammy Awards. I would have watched, but my toenails were having a growth spurt and it was simply that much more fascinating to watch. That the Police were probably the best thing going tells you something about the state of the music industry today. Not that the Police weren't great in their day - and they're still excellent musicians - but why go on tour when you need another roadie just to carry the hair pieces and rejuvenation cream?
I didn't watch the Grammy awards tonight, but was switching channels around 11 and kept the dial on CBS long enough to see the Dixie Chicks win for song of the year and for album of the year.
And they wonder why the music industry is in trouble.
Yes, the web hurts them badly, but there's more to it than that. See Lorie Byrd for more. And also The American Mind.

Hmm, well, at least Dan acknowledged the existence of the clitoris.
It's a start...

But i find it amusing that your the judge on whats classy and whats not Bob. I can obviously tell by your views on this blog your a liberal and at last check that was the "Baby-killin', Gun stealin', Tree-huggin', commiunist" group thats currently trying to destroy this country.
Yeaaaahhh...you sure sound like YOU should be the one who decides whats classy and whats not.

Strange that the Dixie Chicks won a grammy when they couldn't hardly sell a ticket to their last tour. I saw that they were going to be the show along with Al Gore and decided to read Newt Gingrich's book instead.

Actually their tour, their movie, and their new record did very well in terms of sales. But don't let being full of shit stop you.
"I saw that they were going to be the show along with Al Gore and decided to read Newt Gingrich's book instead."
There's clue #1.

How did Anna Nicole Smith become the new winger darling? Hmm:
1. Money-grubbing.
2. Not particularly bright, interesting, creative, talented, articulate, well-read, etc.
3. Junkie.
All of the elements are present.
Posted by: Legalize | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 09:30 AM
I prefer "Ditzy Chicks", really, your formulation doesn't make sense. Its not even really an insult to call someone a "clit", as opposed to ass or dickhead :p
Also, now will they stfu about being 'repressed' and 'punished' for their outspokeness?
Posted by: darcy_lane | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 09:30 AM
"Also, now will they stfu about being 'repressed' and 'punished' for their outspokeness?"
I suppose that depends on whether or not they continue to get death threats from members of the Party of Life.
Posted by: Legalize | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 09:47 AM
Hell, i'll take the politics out of it. Their music is just plain awful and the whole "I'm such a bad girl and im not a goody goody" routine is just so...UGH.
The fact that they won any grammys is astaounding to me, but then again "My Humps" by The Black Eyed Peas beat (Cable Car) by The Fray...soooo...that should tell you alot about who's doing the actual voting. I mean...their abyssmal sales and vacant tour stops should have been a great indication that they pretty much suck, but noooooo they get a grammy anyways.
Same goes with the Academy Awards...doesnt matter that some of these movies didn't even make back what they cost to make...ohhh noooo...they "made a point" and it was the BESHT M0V1E EVAR! Stupid ignorant voting masses....*grumble grumble*

So awards should be decided by sales? Good movies/music etc that are missed by the mainstream are highlighted by these awards as they should be. If it were all about sales we'd see nothing but teeny bopper bands getting awards. I think it's sad when bad films like Titanic are rewarded by the academy fgor their mediocrity when there are about a half dozen movies that year that were better.

Whats wrong with basing awards upon success? Isn't that the point of your work? I mean..sure...sometimes someone will make a movie to make a point, but is that the ONLY reason you work? Nope. Most people get in to the business for the fame and fortune and THATS FINE.
The new Pirates movie...made like....400+ million. Last I checked it was a huge success story over another movie such as....Little Miss Sunshine. Why shouldnt a success be awared with some recognition?
Last movie that WASNT a wide-spread blockbuster that was DESERVING of an Academy Award (it SHOULD have been nominated for best picture) was Pan's Labyrinth. Watch it and I dare you to disagree with me.

if theres one thing that likely bothers dan more than the dixie chicks, it's hip hop.
Hahahah i love watching wingers squirm painfully at the sight of it.
And all this "the dixie chicks tour didn't make any money" nonsense
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Chicks_discography
Hmm... they've had 6 #1 songs... Their 2006 Album reached #1 on sales charts
so ok, perhaps they aren't selling out concerts the way the ludacris, jay-z , or even the rolling stones still do, but i dont think they're broke. It's certainly false to claim no-one's listening to their music!
Haha, but whatever wingers, at least a hip hop artist didn't win. There's a whole slice of american culture that is inscrutable for you.
Posted by: LOL | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 10:27 AM
Actually Templar they won FIVE awards. That just shows you how far the lunacy of the judging community has progressed.
Posted by: Kite | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 10:28 AM
Kite I haven't seen Pan's Labrynth but I'll check it out. Pirates was a fun movie that made tons of money, but it's not great film making by any stretch. Little Miss Sunshine is a great story with fantastic acting performances and it was one of the best movies I saw this year.
Success is one factor, but quality is another. The Backstreet Boys broke all sorts of sales records, are you going argue that they produced the best music of their era?
Elvis outsold Bach and Mozart, is he a better musician? Just because something has mass appeal does not mean that it's quality.

Yeah, okay. They're terrified that their base of support, "moonbat nation", has shrank to... let's see... 216 out of 300 million Americans. Wouldn't want to be in their shoes!
Speaking of real 'Murican country artists, did anyone catch this?

I'd have to agree with you on one thing... I'm sure you are an expert in masturbatory fantasy.
Posted by: Robert | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 11:14 AM
TheSpartan - Well, I must say I agree with you on that to a point. Some movies that don't sell well can be better than some summer blockbusters, but the frustrating part is that most of the big sellers really don't get any recognition other than the paychecks. Which, I guess if you made 400+ million on a movie you wouldn't care either way, but most critics/reviewers just bash the hell out of the best sellers and then complain that some preachy short-film didn't get the money they claim it deserves.
The point I make is that most award programs such as the SAG's, Oscars, Emmys, Grammys are "tainted" by biased judges and voters. It just so happens that those awards are controlled by a majority of liberal leftists. It wouldn't be right if a bunch of right-wing bible thumpers ran the show either....it's just not geared towards building a pure academy.
Example: Brokeback Mountain. Why was it nominated for so many awards? Was it because it did so well in the box office? Was it because it was a GREAT movie? Both of those answers are a resounding NO. It was recognised simply for the fact it "broke bold boundaries and explored forbidden themes" It wasnt awarded upon its weight as a good film....it was nominated because it was "bold". Personally, that shouldn't be how a film is graded. The acting was pitiful and the story itself was droll...
Crash was an example of a perfect movie. It invoked alot of themes and thoughts amongst people while not being so intense that you just couldn't connect or felt mad. It explored the aspects of racism but it didn't make you feel like a racist while watching it. The music was phenomenal, acting was powerful, and the feel and pace of the story was placed just right to keep you interested till the end. It made a point, but it didnt cram it down your throat.
Lets go back to the Dixie Chicks. Can the sing? Yes, they do show some shred of talent but they aren't the greatest female artists on the circuit. You have to ask...how exactly did they make their fame? Was it their powerful and moving music? Not really...
In all truth they gained their fame (or infamy) by opening their mouths and screaming about the president. The Hollywood crowd...hates the president. They get nominated for top grammy awards (despite the fact their sales were far lower than some of their opponents) and got those awards.
It's a biased award show. If it was run by a bunch of right-wing church guys and they nominated some christian-rock group against a hard rock group like say...Tool and they awarded the church rock group based on their own personal views...it would still be wrong. The point i'm trying to make is we have grand awards being given out to mediocre artists but because those artists will support their personal agendas....they get the big awards while someone else more deserving gets left out in the cold.

Flipping the channels and saw D.C. win -imm. knew it was political and continued flipping. Awards are made up B.S.-it's always only about the $. Funny though how these artists are all available at walmart and target. No conflict of interest there.
Posted by: splashtc | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 11:43 AM
Kite --
The Dixie Chicks already had sold millions of records before their off the cuff remark about the President. Secondly, they actually are talented. Honest. Not my cup of tea entirely, but their talent is really without question.
The fact is most musicians steer clear of political statements and the award shows are not political theater insofar as the industry is about making entertainment product with the broadest possible appeal (that would be politically neutral, wouldn't it?). 99.99% of the acts at the Grammys have nothing to say about politics. Period. If you see leftist liberal hobgoblins backstage at the Grammys, you should take a little breather.
Posted by: scott | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 11:49 AM
The bumper stickers say, "The Dixie Chicks Were Right." They replace the ones with "Don't Blame Me, I voted for {insert name}"

Posted by: scott | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 11:51 AM
Sorry, Kite, but the Chicks won 4 Grammies in 2003 BEFORE the controversy. So, your point about them gaining fame for opening their mouths is just plain wrong.
Posted by: smedley | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 11:53 AM
"Was it because it was a GREAT movie? Both of those answers are a resounding NO."
Did you see Brokeback Mountain? It was a great movie, the writing and acting on all counts was phenomenal. Heath Ledger is positioning himself as one of the great actors of this generation. Just because you don't like the subject matter doesn't mean it wasn't good filmmaking.
Posted by: TheSpartan | Monday, February 12, 2007 at 12:07 PM
people actually watch that (Grammy)shit?
personally i don't like the chix, that kind of music never appealed to me, and whatever awards they may or may not win don't really matter in the grand scheme of things
what i do get a kick out of is the monkey poo flinging of the trolls posting in the comments here all day, every day at a site which they proclaim to hate and the people that they insist are not worth arguing with
what would they do without you Dan?
i am singularly unimpressed with their lack of intellectual acumen
willfully obtuse and vile auto contrarians who march in lockstep to the orders of the "great leftist collective"
whatever happened to individuality? i think it was bowled over by pc social engineering

Musicians steer clear of political statements? Really? Let's review.
Nine Inch Nails - During the last few years they were invited to play at the MTV music awards. They originally planned to play the song "The Hand that Feeds" with a modified picture of President Bush on a giant screen behind them. Although it was changed at the last minute....they still tried.
Green Day - A constant vocal voice against the Administration. Their new album has many political allusions within it. Although they don't bash them during their shows (at least not that i've heard) they have constantly spoke out against the administration.
Barbara streisand - I don't even have to name all of the times she has used her public image to bad mouth the president.
Dixie Chicks - See current topic and their past records for reference. We should all be familiar with it.
Kanye West - His infamous "Bush doesnt care about black people" comment. He has since then melted down.
Lets see about the movie stars.
Matt Damon - Said if he could pay for Kerry to win the election he would have.
George Clooney - Constant critic of the administration. Uses his public image to also push forwards global warming and enviromentalism.
Leonardo DiCaprio - See George Clooney above.
-----------------------------------------------
Back to music shall we?
Creedence Clearwater Revival - It's a stretch back in to the 70's and before but they used their music to speak out against governmental establishments.
Tool - Have used ALL of their albums to one way or another bash religious faith (mainly judeo-christian) and have make political stunts spoofing the Bush administration and then making fun of Jesus. (in the form of a april fools joke).
Now, these people have the right to say what they want too. The first amendment protects their right to complain about whatever they want...so i'm not saying they should be silenced. What I AM SAYING is that TONS of entertainers use their public images to push forwards political and social agendas. It's nothing new and to say that most artists AVOID political statements is just incorrect.

The same people who think the Dixie Chicks don't make money anymore think our soldiers still support Bush policy in Iraq.

"Its not even really an insult to call someone a "clit"..."
It is if one is afraid of, and therfore hostile toward, women.
The first step in allowing yourself to hate a group of individuals is to dehumanize them. Reducing them (via labeling, as Mr Riehl does here) to portions of their genitalia is an attempt to reduce his own fear by making them less human (pieces, not persons) and--given the associative location of the clitoris--make himself feel more powerful because, given his presumed heterogenous equipmrnt, he would be able to penetrate their defenses.
Poor sad little man. Therapy is indicated.
