US Attacked: National Guard Routed
How utterly disgusting. If this was a diversion, as one scenario suggests, we can only hope that something even more dangerous wasn't smuggled in. And if you need a better example of an alleged super power so hobbled by political correctness and weak political leadership that it can hardly protect itself, let alone wage a war - you may be waiting a long time for better than this.
I imagine the National Guard was operating under ROE's that prevented them from firing back. But, yes, armed men from Mexico entered the US, attacked a National Guard position and the National Guard turned tail and ran, probably their only alternative under President Bush's wonderful border enforcement policy.
Americans should be as outraged as they are sad, because if this precipitates any change, it'll likely be seen as a rationale for taking the Guard off the border, not giving them the ability to fight back. Face it, this administration probably fears gunning down some illegal more than it does allowing them to enter the country at will.
A U.S. Border Patrol entry Identification Team site was overrun Wednesday night along Arizona's border with Mexico.
According to the Border Patrol, an unknown number of gunmen attacked the site in the state's West Desert Region around 11 p.m. The site is manned by National Guardsmen. Those guardsmen were forced to retreat. *

Yep---Operation Jump Start does not allow our National Guard to be involved in " direct law enforcement activity." Now doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

They probably weren't issued live ammo. That happens all the time. I remember guarding a helo flightline with an empty weapon usable only as a club.

Is it my imagination or are we about to go to war with Iran via our Mexican border?

We are doomed! Nobody cares that this has happened. The republicans, democrats, msm, americans, etc. We absolutely deserve what is coming to us - a bankrupt nation that won't be able to keep up with the largess we would owe to illegal's who want free health, free education, free retirement... Nicely done Bush and the rest of the politicians that sold this great nation down the toilet.

Your government at work, folks.
No solutions for a real problem--millions of illegal aliens--entering the country bringing guns, drugs and whatever.
But Bush needs to read your mail, feel you up at the airport and have a look see at your bank records just in case you might be a terorrist or a terrorist sympathizer.
In other words, we spend billions on a relatively dim threat: one terror attack in our history, vs. no solution to a real, daily threat: millions of illegals entering from Mexico.
Yes, we are doomed.

"on a relatively dim threat: one terror attack in our history"
Successes don't matter I guess, only the failures? BTW, the trade center was bombed TWICE - remember the blind sheik?
Posted by: Purple Avenger | Friday, January 05, 2007 at 01:42 PM
okay, two successful terrorist attacks.
how many citizens have illegal aliens killed, raped and robbed do you think on a yearly basis?
my guess is a hell of a lot more than 3,000.
it does not diminish the tragedy of the WTC attack to wonder if our response has not been out of all proportion to the actual threat, emcompassing all kinds of stupid things like confiscating lip gloss and hararssing old people, that are utterly irrelevant to any terrorist threats.
we have turned a relatively contained threat...potential attack by al quada...most other islamic terror groups explicitly state they do not intend to attack American on its soil...into a global war that necessitates billions of dollars and a wholesale thrashing of our civil liberties all in the name of preventing an attack that in all liklihood we won't be able to prevent anyway.

You said it up front: disgusting. Completely, totally, 100% disgusting.
Better start learning to speak Spanish and read Arabic now....
Thanks for N O T H I N G Dubya !!

Hey don't just lay this on the President. Several high ranking congressional assholes attended rallies held by the illegal felons this past summer. Durbin even told azteca that "we will win this". So spread the shit around cause they are all equally culpable. And don't forget who is now pushing the bill for amnesty. Our fucking government is incompetent and needs to be removed from power.

Operation Jump Start?
More like Operation Dead Battery

One of my sons recently returned from Iraq; I have two more over there, one in Afghanistan and the other in Iraq.
Time to bring them home. I've had enough of the obscene irrationality of defending the Iraqis while our borders are undefended. The inaptly named War on Terror is an indefensible effort when a Syrian with Hispanic features can settle in San Diego, but we shoot his fucking ass in Ramadi. Enough!
This is the worst government in living memory, both parties.

Two successful attempts--Yep, but how many unsuccessful. Bet the number would keep us awake at night.
Illegal immigrants have been crossing our borders for years and more importantly have been hired by construction companies, produce farms, as gardners for the family across the street and next door, as cleaning ladies by those same families, not to mention child caretakers. Now that the amount crossing are hitting us all in the pocketbook, we as a nation are blaming the government and yelling "Stop Them." We have had a blind eye for years--by choice because it made things easier and cheaper for us--we as citizens need to shoulder the blame. Everyone one of us that hired an illegal or chose to look the other way when someone we knew hired an illegal is what ultimately put us in the postion we are in now. Shame on us for not accepting our responsibilty. We need to stop blaming and start supporting those who are in a position to stop this influx.

Please thank you sons for me for supporting what our country stands for. And thank you for raising three children who felt (at least at one time) that the USA is a country to be proud to represent. You apparently did a very good job.

Folks in the Ga Guard the ones sent to the border are NOT armed.I thought about doing a three month stint, but since we are not allowd weapons I'll wait.

Thank you Jolari. It's been rough, all the way. We would do it again, anywhere, though, for the right reasons.

The followup story from the same source reports that:
The armed confrontation occurred around 11 p.m. Wednesday near Sasabe , about a quarter-mile north of the border. A team of four or five Guard troops, armed with M-16s , were watching for border crossers at an observation post when they spotted four men carrying what appeared to be rifles, Martinez said.
As the men came closer, the Guard troops left their post and called for the Border Patrol.
"In order to not be detected, they moved to a safer location," Martinez said. "That's exactly what we want them to do.
"They're armed for their protection. Once they are afraid for their lives, they can defend themselves.
"That was not the case."
Border Patrol agents responded within minutes and scoured the area by helicopter and on the ground, but the gunmen were not located. Their tracks showed that they had arrived near the observation post after crossing into the United States from Mexico.
So basically, the Guardsmen followed their ROE, called in backup, and the "invaders" left.

What the hell... now the Mexicans are pulling off Pancho Villa raids into US territory?
Why were these guardsmen not given weapons or ammo, or if so equipped, why were they given an ROE that required a retreat?
Why did they not shoot those invaders, and leave thier carcasses out for the vultures?
I think Rhod is right... perhaps we should let the Middle East know that it can have its way in the ME, but any attack on Americans or American territory will result in the nuking of all Islamic holy cities and any other high value targets, stat. Go ahead, build yer own nukes... but we have a head start of several thousand warheads and th means to get them over yer heads.
And while we are at it, we should draw down our presence in the Pacific as well, save for a few naval bases to meet our needs.
Meanwhile, bring back the Army and secure the borders, mine it 300m deep, and declare it an instant death zone. Gather up all the illegals and march them at gunpoint back accross the border as well.
Continental Army + Nuclear Navy + Global Reach Aerospace Forces + more nukes than the rest of the world combined = America well defended.
Our attempts to play at Empire WILL cost us our nation in the end.

"And while we are at it, we should draw down our presence in the Pacific as well, save for a few naval bases to meet our needs."
Well, that would make the Communist Chinese happy, and jeapordize other nations, important trading partners with which we have treaty commitments, but how would that be good for the United States? How does limiting the Fleet bolster our defense?
"...play at Empire", my aching butt.

I was on the border in the Sasabe area from July to Oct. this is only the first reported to the news but not the first time it has happened. While on mission there my squad was approached at about 1130 pm on a moonless night when we heard someone running up on us. we took a defensive postion and the person turned back south. It happened again at about 0300am that same night when an armed person walked up and watched us from about 50 meters. once we heard him again we again took up a defensive position and the person ran back again. although we never saw a weapon we damn sure heard one. and we were told one was found on the trail the person used to get back to the border. I was apart of Taskforce Stonewall. Virginia Army National Guard. the standing order on any altercation is to leave and do not engage unless it is to protect life.
