This is what happens when you actually loose the dogs of War and take the battle to the enemy, as was done by Ethiopia (with America's help) in Somalia. I'm not prepared to say that bringing him into some peace process is a good idea, especially as it seems to be the State Department line.
But it does look as though we helped him get to Kenya, possibly in sort of a good cop bad military scenario.
NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan. 22 – The second highest member of Somalia’s defeated Islamist forces, a man described as a moderate Muslim and potential peacemaker, surrendered to Kenyan authorities and is staying at a hotel in Nairobi, Western diplomats and Somali officials said today.
Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the head of the Islamist Courts Union executive council, was part of a group of Islamist leaders being hunted down by American and Ethiopian troops in southern Somalia. He surfaced at the Kenya-Somalia border in the past week, Somali officials said, and now Kenyan immigration authorities are deliberating what to do with him.
