I'm betting the ink ain't even dry on those newly discovered records. AP just spread some of the "universal lubricant" around and bought themselves a freshly minted person.

Not sure if everyone has seen these videos of the US military in Iraq or not, but they are pretty amazing: Hopefully our 'surge' will not include too many of these types...

Was this a trap set up by Eason Jordan? You know as to get back those dirty bloggers that disgraced him out of his job at CNN?

The Wingnut Web thought it was invincible when Dan Rather fumbled, and PowerLine caught him.

You have been trying to relive your glory ever since.

But you know what?

You all have shot your own credibility far more frequently in the 2 years since Memogate than Rather did in his 50 years in journalism.

Which is .... funny.

Oh well, you'll always have your hate.

A trap set by Eason Jordan!?!

Ahaahahahahahahha!!!

Wow. It's like a blueprint into the delusional mind.

Just a-ma-zing.

Added a link to your post at CENTCOM says AP's Iraqi police source isn't Iraqi police -- Part 29. -- http://www.smalltownveteran.net/bills_bites/2007/01/jamil_identifie.html -- A short excerpt from my post:

You know where this is going, people. Check out this paragraph from the AP piece Michelle linked to:

Hussein told the AP on Wednesday that he learned the arrest warrant would be issued when he returned to work on Thursday after the Eid al-Adha holiday. His phone was turned off Thursday and he could not be reached for further comment.

What we're going to be hearing by Saturday is:

Jamil's afraid of getting arrested so he's gone so deep underground that even his old AP contacts can't find him. But we really did talk to him last week. Really we did. Really!

You people and your hysterical conspiracy theories are just hilarious.

Doesn't it seem slightly believable that in a country where thousands of people are murdered every month that someone might be afraid of being targeted after gaining some attention as a spokesman for one of the two sectarian factions?

What exactly is your Grand Unifying Theory?

I was talking to a Nutter yesteray who was convinced that the Associated Press is advancing a Marxist agenda and is trying to bring down the United States.

Is that what you guys believe?

How many tens of thousands of wingnut hours do y'all suppose have been burned up chasing after this story? What a waste of time and energy. I'd be a lot more scared of the Right Wing Web if y'all focuses your attention on something a little more reality-based.

Do you think that if you could have proven that Jamil Hussein was fake that suddenly the United States would be winning the war in Iraq? Do you think you can exonerate Bush of all his failures if you prove the AP made a mistake?

We're supposed to believe this guy would knowingly risk his career to give stories to AP for free(see AP policy), not get paid for it, when he could have hooked up with a stringer, fed the stringer, and took a nice kickback and ran that game for the next 10 years.

Right. I can believe that ;->

Best leave this sinking ship while you got a chance. Michelle "anchor baby" Malkin is weighing you down, Dan. How about getting back to the issues that are real? Like, figuring out how we're going to pay back that half a trillion dollars (and counting) we have spent on the Occupation of Iraq.
ps. Ellison looked great standing in the House holding Jefferson's Koran today!

So, "Purple Avenger," what's your theory?

I was talking to one of your co-nutters yesterday. He insists the AP is trying to bring down America.

Is that what you believe, too?

He said that the AP is "Marxist."

You agree?

He said that he is almost ready to agree that all hope is lost in Iraq -- thanks to the AP.

Do you find this bizarre and desperate? Or is it what you think, too?

While you're at it, what do you suppose would so motivate the AP?

I will admit one thing. After six years of Bush, I'm willing to concede this point to you guys:

If I was a nutter or loon, then I too would be desperate and thrashing about looking for ANY THING I could hang on to to redeem my self-image. Like you, I would barely be able to face myself.

You all thought you were going to smash the world into submission like a grape. But the AP wouldn't let you. And you're stunned, just stunned that the Associated Press defeated the most powerful military and the Bestest President Evah.

Amazing, ain't it?

Wingnuts:

Maybe you should focus your keen investigative skills towards finding Osama bin Laden or the WMD Saddam hid in Syria before the war!

"So, "Purple Avenger," what's your theory?"

My "theory" is that AP has produced no physical evidence so far at all, only assertions. If they could produce even a single page out of a reporter's notebook with the details of a single Jamil Hussein contact for a specific incident they reported on I would change my position.

I look at it this way.

Suppose you had a family member kidnapped and the kidnappers were demanding ransom. Naturally you want some "proof of life" before forking over the cash.

Do you believe anything the AP has put forth so far even comes close to being a proof of life?

Nope.

This story is kinda interesting. But there is a more interesting point: Iraq wants to arrest him. Don't ya wish Bush could do that in the U.S. A police officer talks to the press and the officer gets arrested for talking to a reporter. I don't know how anyone is gonna get any information about anything anymore. Why, people will even stop talking to the blogs after a bit; on or off the record. You can get arrest that way ya know.

I know the Soviet Union would support Iraq doing that. But who would of thought the great U.S. would approve as well.

Reporters and bloggers might as well go home. No info to anyone. Well unless approved by the government. Now that's freedom of the press.

But I don't think he exists. First Iraq says he don't; then he do.

"Don't ya wish Bush could do that in the U.S. A police officer talks to the press and the officer gets arrested for talking to a reporter."

Actually, a cop talking to media out of line saying something stupid can and does compromise/prejudice cases all the time with sometimes catastrophic ramifications for the prosecution. There is a reason why the larger PD's that can afford them have media relations staff.

But you knew all that anyway right?

What I don't get is since it's an almost daily (and undisputed) occurrence for multiple bodies to turn up with electric drill torture, what is so inconceivable about people being set aflame that it's dismissed as a hoax a priori.

Granted, I have no idea whether it's true or not, but it's this concept of "no way possible" that's so odd.

A simple "I'm sorry" by Malkin et al would be in order.

Meanwhile Pajamas "Media" has been headlining that Khameini is dead for over 24 hours based solely on a nameless source.

No confirmation still, but who cares? When you report someone is dead, you know you'll be right...someday.

Jamil Hussein existed up until yesterday, but he might not exist today. If Malkin gets the guy killed, doesn't that prove she's right? It will certainly teach the Iraqis a lesson about talking to the lying American press.

I was telling you all along, that trusting in the word of the Ministry of Information (which is riddled with Shiite militia members) PR guy versus the Associated Press was foolish. But once again, in you idealogical fervor to attack the "liberal MSM" your wishes got ahead of reality.

Skepticism is always warranted, blind belief that the other side is alway wrong, is just insanity.

So, Purple, your policy is not to believe any news story until you've seen the reporters notebook that the story was based on, interviewed the sources yourself, and independently fact-checked every detail? Reading the paper must be a very time consuming task for you.

The AP story quotes an Interior Ministry spokesman (Brig. Abdul-Karim Khalaf,) as confirming that Jussein does, in fact, exist, and is indeed a police officer (just as AP originally reported). Do you think they're making up Mr Khalaf also? Fabricating his admission that Jamil Hussein exists? The refusal by you and the rest of the wingnuts who have been pimping this story to admit that maybe you got a little ahead of yourselves is just comical. Egg on my face? Sure, there may be some sort of viscous, slimy substance dripping off my chin, and it's clear and yellow and vaguely egg-like, but I won't believe that it's egg until I've seen documentary evidence that it popped out of a chicken's ass! After all, the AP might have manufactured it with a cunning combination of corn starch and food coloring. The MSM is tricky that way.

Anybody but the wingnuts could have told you dopes that AP wouldn't have been getting info. for over a year from a fake police officer.

What you should be truly worried about is why and how our OWN MILITARY basically allowed the Iraqis to put a target on this guy's head and allowed them to denounce him probabably knowing full well that he did in fact exist, just as I am sure they know full well that the original story is true.

Do you fools think that every single killing in Iraq is REPORTED to the military and the police?

There is a little thing called reading between the lines that helps one determine the truth, such as when the powers that be say they have no 'report' they are not actually saying a thing didn't happen, only that they have no documentation.

However, the Iraq government and our own appears to have straight up lied because sadly, nobody has yet learned the lesson that war is not won by public relations.

I can't believe Malkin wasn't smart enough to figure out the setup that was created by some of her detractors. They've been laughing their collective hind ends off for the last 2 days.

Little Michele was blinded by the idea that she was going to singlehandedly bring down the Associated Press and strike a blow for 'truth'...

This is what happens to ideological zealots when they are forced to confront actual reality: they get shown up for the gullible fools they are.

The nutters WANTED it to be true that AP was not only so sloppy and stupid they couldn't tell or didnt' care who was or was not a police officer. The nutters WANTED and still WANT it to be true that no military linked militia killed those Sunnis as was reported. The nutters WANT it to be true that AP was aiding the enemy by reporting false bad news from a terrorist operative plant.

The trouble is, in reality AP would never be so sloppy as to give the individual's name and occupation and quote him on the record unless he was who he said he was. If they had been quoting an unnamed source, it might at least have been plausible that they got lazy and snookered. Same thing with the actual incident, AP went back and interviewed multiple people and confirmed the incident did occur just as they had reported it, but the nutters couldn't comprehend why anyone in Iraq wouldn't want their name put in an American wire story about Sunni assassinations so they determined it was AP making it all up.

Dear god, it amazes me that people this stupid every got into power in the first place. The only thing you nutters are right about is that our country is going down the tubes, you are just wrong about most of the reasons why.

Michele is an ass and a fool.

Malkin and Flopping Aces are going to Iraq anyway. Eason Jordan is paying and providing security. The policeman they were going tohunt down has been ided by the Iraqi government. He may have been their version of Homeland Security or something and AP chose to try to cover up his id.

Alot of people were thinking sniper shooting Malkin, but then she explained it's really Flopping Aces who got all excited. So, if you check Eason Jordan, he is a retired CNN guy and Malkin is a retired Newspaper reporter. Eason is dating Pearl's wife as: 'A Mighty Heart. The book is currently being adapted into a film starring Angelina Jolie and Dan Futterman' is being shot amongst Al Quaeda terror threats probably because the stars guards beat too many reporters.

The thinking now is EID. All three from the MSM. The security has to gone over and there are all these new rules for contractors. Going is probably a mistake. The Iraqis have already compromised.

The deal is this:

The nutjobs (Malkin, Confederate Yankee, et al.) don't have to be right.

And they don't have to apologize.

They only have one purpose: Bash the media, in an ongoing attempt to undermine Ameicans' confidence in the media. This is what allows the Rush Limbaugh crowd to literally disbelieve anything. If Rush Limbaugh told his audience that there was no state of Colorado, and it's just a fiction of the liberal media, 98% of his listeners would agree with him.

They have totally insulated themselves from reality.

That is the function of Michelle Malkin, Bill O'Reilly, and the rest. They exist to create a smoke screen that confuses the public.

The sad/funny thing is that the consumers of the Rush/O'Reilly/Malkin product are dupes. They are deceiving their own audience. And the audience laps it up.

Well, the real sad/tragic thing is that it appears millions of people are stupid enough to believe this stuff.

If you ever wanted to know how Hitler was able to perpetrate the holocaust in a country where he barely won the election....take a look in the mirror.

Fear, hate and propaganda are powerful things. It is much, much, MUCH more convenient to believe easy lies than complicated truth.

Thus, the easy lie is that we are 'really' winning in Iraq and every setback is due to MSM being a tool of the enemy. This is comforting, it let's us believe in our own goodness and invincibility.

The inconvenient complex truth, that we are not winning in Iraq, that we got into something we didn't understand [see paragraph above, our Iraq Plan was based on the easy lie, a false reality] and that military and technological superiority are not enough to 'win' in this type of situation.

That is a scary truth that people don't like, it makes us seem vunerable and not that smart.

Fear and hate mongers simply pick a convenient target...Arabs, media elite, Jews...whatever fits the bill at the moment and take aim.

Sadly, they will always have a ready and willing audience.

Mr. Riehl-I commend you on letting dissent be published on your comment page.

The buffoonery of con accusations are actually endangering lives.

Nothing new there though.

Assrocket was gravely wrong a while back. Never saw an apology or even admittance of how bad he screwed up.

I might be a hypocrite and dead at times, but I'm a big enough man to admit it.

R U?

I agree with Martin. Malkin's page wouldn't publish my mockery of her "faux" journalism.

Compliments to you, even if you are horribly wrong about stuff.

These guys will NEVER admit they were wrong about anything.

If you ask them, most will still say that somehow Saddam was able to smuggle all his WMD to Syria right under the noses of 140,000 troops and sat. imagery that can tell what kind of gun you are carrying.

It is only a matter of time before they decide that while Jamal may be alive, he's just a dirty, lying terrorist anyway and deserves to be arrested and 'harshly interrogated' for the having the unmitigated gaul to tell the truth to an American report about an atrocity.

Don't forget, these guys want the same thing to happen to American reporters and their sources, they want them all put in jail and accused of treason, national security violations or anything they can think of. Why?

Because far from wanting the 'truth' they want to simply control the flow of information so they can maintain their illusions. If no bad news is reported out of Iraq then we are winning. If nobody publishes the Abu Giraud prison abuse photos then no abuse occured. If nobody investigates the rape of a 14 year old Iraqi girl by our troops then it did not happen.

Belief=Reality

George Orwell would be so proud.

The morally flawed nutters on this Blog are now dismissing the value of the information regarding the confirmation of Hussein's tenancy in the Police Dept. Now this fact is inconsequential but it was pretty G. D. important before when the Hee Haw peanut gallery were using it to discredit the story of Shite Militia attrocities. The majority of the intellectual community are in agreement that there is a serious sectarian conflict in Iraq but handfulls of crude intellect like this Riehl dimwit cling to the same old tired right wing idiotlogue (not misspelled) that the green sprout of western democracy will emerge from the sands of the middleast if only the left wing press will stop sabotaging it with their lies ??? Idiots your end is near. I havent met a nutter yet that I couldnt best in straight forward debate and there certainly isnt any nutjobs here with any convincing argument.

I'll echo Martin's comment above...thank you for allowing dissenting views on your site. Many of your right-wing brethren are too cowardly to accept anything but praise and laudatory affirmations. I give you credit for that.

But Dan, for you to end your latest comment by stating “Like most bloggers following this story, all I have ever wanted is the truth” rings hollow.

If you wanted truth, why did you tow the wing-nut line that the AP was making this up, or trying to discredit the war effort, the Iraqi government, or whatever the reason du jour was? Would you really think the Shia-led government, or even a military press relations person (whose first interest must be the mission) would be more credible than an independent western news organization?

Was this actually an attempt to establish truth, or just another effort to discredit the MSM?

This is more than a black eye for the 101st Fighting Keyboardists; it truly reveals them as apologists for a failed policy and calls into question their own credibility. Which now, more than ever, is close to zero.

Less than zero.

The breathlessness which Michelle and the rest of the wingnuts catalogued the 'disappearance' of Jamil, their croaking about why can't AP produce him if he's real, and their absolute belief in what the Iraq Ministry and our military said is truly pathetic.

Of course, now that the Iraqis have admitted he does exist, existed all along, is and does exactly what he said he did, and added in the fact that they are arresting him for talking to the press is now BESIDE THE POINT.

Dan tries the old shell game trick, now it isn't about Jamil being an invention or a non credible source, its back to the Sunni massacre. But AP has already verified that it occured by interviewing additional witnesses, which of course, isn't enough for these nuts. If AP were to produce and name these witnesses, who would then surely be arrested or mudered themselves, they would find another reason to cling to their belief that nothing bad was happening in Iraq that couldnt' be solved by some nice, positive stories.

War by press release. Okey dokey.

"But Dan, for you to end your latest comment by stating “Like most bloggers following this story, all I have ever wanted is the truth” rings hollow.

Thanks for the comments regarding allowing dissent. Contrary to what some seem to believe, my goal is not to constuct a false narrative, but to maintain an on going dialogue which, ultimately, might lead to a little truth. My ideas and opinions loom only because they are at the top of the page, but, no, they are not always right. Some would be surprised to learn that, having worked some in journalism and having studied it, my goal is not to destroy media, but to help re-shape it for the better for all.

I'd advise my Liberal commenters to think twice about jumping on the MSM media bandwagon, simply because this time their poor reporting was attacked from the right. The quick hit and often superficial nature of journalism today takes its victims from both sides of the ideological spectrum.

Many seem to be forgetting that this story factually changed from the AP's first telling - from 4 mosques, to one, etc. And simply proving Hussein's existence does not confirm the immolations. That remains to be done.

Yes, the Iraqi government could be working a cover-up. However, it is just as plausible that AP was taken in by a source. It does happen and there is plenty of history to prove it. Go back and look at my recent post on Katrina and the AP, a classic case of their spreading some amount of false information through the desire to be first, if not right.

I have no more intention of stopping my questioning of the MSM, than I do of shutting down dissent on my blog. And so the story goes on, this discussion is not at an end. And no matter its result, a better media and a more informed consumer is still my primary goal.

I do not think it is 'just as plausible' that the AP was taken in by a source they've been using for over two years.....unless of course you start with the assumption that AP doesn't care about the truth or the facts.

And since when is there a problem with a single source story speaking on the record, an employee of the government?

Answer: Only when he tells the wingnuts something they don't want to hear.

Geeze, if Dick Cheney says something on the record, do we need a second source? Hmm, well, that might be a bad example, since most of what Dickie has said on the record, most emphatically, has turned out to be untrue.

The righnutosphere is always on the lookout for some rumor emanating from the Internet swamps that they frequent. Anything that appears to criticize their Inperial God Bush the Great or his policies, is hysterically seized upon, aggrandized, and declared yet another manipulation from the media.

See, what they want to believe is that the situation is just peachy in Iraq, save for an IED or two, and a few dead US soldiers, that democracy is on the march, and that the insurgency is in its last throes, all thanks to the Magnificent Benefactor of the Universe, George the Great. Anything that contradicts their la-la land vision of the world must be false, hence their hysterical witch hunts. The fun part of this collective dementia is that they are proven wrong time after time after time.

Re la Malkin: anyone who thinks that the cowardly skank will actually go to Iraq is an idiot. She is already backpedalling.

Here's the thing, even if Michelle does go to Iraq does anyone think she would ever admit she was wrong?

She is going to report that things are much, much better than the media says they are, that [shockingly] nobody would talk to her about the Sunni atrocity, she is going to say that the troops are behind Dubya 100%, and that they feel victory will come as soon as the MSM stops reporting bad news.

There is no way she will come away with any other viewpoint than the one she has set out with, that is how the ideologue works.

Should Michelle chance upon any dead Iraqis she will determine them to be dead terrorists, should any errant GIs tell her they think they are dying in vain and want to go home, she will chalk them up to MSM plants or dupes of the liberal traitors, should any actual Iraqis cross her path with less than glorious things to say about Herr Bush and our Glorious Liberation she will dully turn their names over to Iraqi police for investigation as terrorists.

Its as easy as that.

FYI,

You had all better hope that officer Hussein doesn't 'disappear' one day only to show up dead with drill holes in his legs.

I guarantee you MSM would have a field day with the idea that ring wing blog nutters got some poor Iraqi policemen killed as result of their senseless vendetta on a guy trying to tell the truth.

Better hope he lives a long life, Danny boy.

Bring back the head of Jamil Hussein

Michelle Malkin
Our Lady of the Concentration Camps

Officer Floppy
Flopping Aces Security Services

Dear Mrs. Malkin and Officer Floppy,

It looks like the francosphere is in full bore celebration mode now that Jamil Hussein's arrest has made you look like fools. I hope you don't let their laughter get to you. It doesn't matter that you wrote dozens and dozens of posts claiming that Hussein was a fictional AP source. It's the reason you did it that's important. Hussein's quotes to the AP were losing the war for us. You stopped him. I think that makes you heroes.

Think about it. Nobody gave a damn about Hussein until you started raising hell about him. Obviously, someone in DC heard about it, and decided to get the goods on AP's treachery. They asked the Iraqi Interior Ministry (can we end this fiction and call it what it is, the Mahdi Army, now that we've all seen the hanging video?) to look into it, and, now he's sitting in their jail being interrogated with one of those old Sears arc welders.

I hope his capture doesn't affect your plans to go to Iraq. That'd be a shame, especially now that you've made it possible to win this war. Heck, you ought to go there to at least pick up his head if for no other reason. I'm sure the Interior Ministry Mahdi Army will have prepared it for you by the time you arrive. Wouldn't it be great to have it to show off at the next Pajamas Media Christmas party? While you're in Iraq, you could also spend an afternoon taunting Hussein's now-fatherless children by poking them with sticks. I bet you'd enjoy that.

Heterosexually yours,

Gen. JC Christian, patriot

Man, yyy, if they gave out Pulitzers for comments, this would be in the running.

Absolutely beautifully written. Astonishingly clear and cogent distillation of the entire mess.

A lot of repetition here, eh? I'm not sure what the gloating by our three-initial friend is about, really. The repeated theme of "you guys are stupid nutters, but because you're dishonest you'll never admit it, why I'll bet..." is not particularly persuasive. Not that my stupidity in particular or right blogger stupidity in general are impossible, but because there's, uh, not much evidence. Lots of schoolyard insult - which of course convinces ME anyway that I am up against a fearsome intellect that I cross only at my peril.

Make a damn coherent argument so we can have a discussion, dammit.

yes, virginia, there is a jamil hussein....

"Lots of schoolyard insult"

oh! the faux indignation!

it's your eff-up; own it.

KEvron

For weeks now, Danny has been urging for the AP to be held to account. He has been convinced of their perfidy by his own understanding of journalism (however limited), posts from other bloggers that followed exactly the same thread he so hated in the MSM stories, and press releases from the JOC and the thoroughly infiltrated Iraqi MOI.

It's funny when you think about it, when you bandy about the meme that a news service is in the back pocket of the insurgency, and thus guilty of stabbing American troops and policies in the back, that being shown to be wrong is so easily dismissed. Particularly when the sources of the denial are the JOC that gave us the Pat Tillman, Haditha, and Jessica Lynch stories are still touted as superior sources of information. Not to mention the MOI, whose credibility is only called into question when they confirm the existence of the officer in question, but about whom nothing is mentioned when the report is that the Imam who confirmed the story recants after their visit.

So, it appears that the officer does exist, and may be arrested for providing information to the AP. And yet, none of the bloggers who gleefully, and mistakenly, jumped on this train, in hopes of undermining reporting out of Iraq, have nothing to be held to account for. That's...interesting.

Perhaps your demand for accurate reporting could begin at home, as could your insistence that those who get it wrong be held to account. It doesn't really matter, though, given the vanishingly small percentage of people who come to you for accurate reporting. And Happy Holidays, Danny.

Let's see. The lunatics on the extremist right challenge AP and the wingnuts lose. So, do the freaks of nature apologize and move on, as normal people would do? Does that really below-average-intelligence Michelle Malkin say "I'm sorry?" OF COURSE NOT! They lack even the basics, the fundamentals of integrity and grace. They are liars, they are America-Haters. Well, the feeling is mutual: America hates them. I only wish we could deport these "Support the War by Staying Safe Here in America" cry-baby cowards to Iran.

Dear Mr. Riehl,

Congratulations on your efforts to seek the truth. I see in the responses generated here that Jesus and his trusty bully, Satan, have allowed their brokeback henchmen to join hand-in-hand. That is a testament to your good work, son. Fair is foul and foul is fair and all that. I'll take care of the boys - I don't like having my creations mocked. You keep up the good work.

God

The war bloggers are a sorry lot. They do not know what is the truth. They can not even admit they are wrong when FOX News says they are wrong. They are not following Rupert Murdoch script. Red neck do have little brains. That is why they voted for a clown to be President. But now that the people of America have kicked out the sicko Republican majority over the will of the war bloggers, we will see more details of the GWB lies about WMD, Iraq, torture of American and foreign citizens in violation of US Constitution, violation of American civil rights by NSA, CIA and DOD. The swindling of American by Halliburton and Oil companies.

The war bloggers and the neo-cons are whinning at the giant loss of power. The war bloggers are a real asset to the Democrats. Keep it up and we will the more of the senate go Demo and the Pres go Demo.

once again, dan, another riehl-stupid mistake you won't ever admit to making.

lack of credibility? did you know you were really just talking about yourself and all your armchair-warrior winger buddies?
