I don't have much confidence in the Maliki government to crack down on the Sadrists, but we'll see. I think it's more a move to prevent US intervention in that regard, than anything else.

HA!HA! The US is supporting a Shia government that is a sattelite of Iran! Another Mission Acomplished from the Enlightened Supreme Leader!

the sending of three divisions of us troops to Baghdad is really the sending of an army to invade Iran. the Bushies are determined to tangle us into a wide war in the mideast with no allies. (Brits will supply a hundred troops) and we will be up the Persian Gulf without the proverbial paddle.

Did you two even read the link?
It really is a sickness - this hoping we will fail. Now they're hoping the Iraqis will fail when they try to make a move on their own.
What on earth would make you two happy, anyway?

Honestly I think that al-Maliki understands that only by shutting down all of the sectarian militias can Iraq continue to be a nation. Whether he can do it remains to be seen.

These preconditions need to be in place before you can suppress the insurgency:
[1] There must be a government that is viewed by the Sunni minority as legitimate. The current Shia-dominated farce of Iranian alligned Islamist fundamentalists isn't it.
[2] There needs to be Iraqi police (not soldiers) on every street-corner controlling the rampant crime and violence. The current Badr-brigade dominated thugs dressed in police uniforms randomly killing Sunnis isn't it and Mahdi Militia members serving as "community protection" in Sadr-city and the south isn't it either.
