According to an item from the Lone Star Times, Derrick Shareef previously threatened to attack a synagogue "just down the street" from the mosque he attended.
Given logistics and that there is evidently only one mosque in Dekalb, they place it at 721 Normal Road - which is also the address of the Muslim Student Association at Northern Illinois University. Website here
LoneStar also suggests a fellow worshiper may have turned Shareef in, given it was said to be someone he trusted.
At the same time, a review of the articles at the site sheds at least some light on their preferred view on Islam. If one is going to be uncompromising, it's unclear how they would be content living in a secular state governed by man made law.
The Pitfalls of Emotion
Nationalism.. An Erroneous ConceptResisting The Urge To Compromise -- The most popular catch-cry of today's generation is the word "compromise". The weak consider it as harmless, the ignorant hold it as beneficial, and the astray count it as essential. Seems too powerful a conclusion, but that's the reality. In Islam, there is absolutely no room for compromise. There is no evidence that the Prophet (s.a.w) ever did so, nor did his companions, nor does the Qur'an provide scope for it.

The 'weak', the 'ignorant', the 'astray'. I wonder if that is sequential dementia?
For sure they give no truck to compromise. They forgot the 'the knowledgeable', 'the determined', and 'the deadly'.
