So it would seem. Irrespective of his wife being from one of Sweden's wealthier families ... putting aside his own UN subsidized home and a similar arrangement for his brother ... it seems the family has been benefiting from a low income housing arrangement for years.
This is why you have to love Liberals, they're such unashamed hypocrites. Annan and his family profited legally and through ill-gotten gains while many people of the world went without. Why would he act any differently to domestic taxpayers and those in New York City in need of affordable housing?
Annan is a corrupt degenerate Liberal. As long as his own wealth is secure, he could actually care less about anyone else. His job isn't to help people, it's only to lecture others on what they should do. Thank God this moron is gone. Now if we could only get his sorry ass out of the country ... for good.
As an aside, I wonder why they kept his wife Nane underwraps all these years? Was it her wealth, or her color? Frankly, I think maybe Kofi didn't want to lose his street cred with the Third World.
As Secretary-General Annan prepares to leave his post at the United Nations, a mystery is surfacing surrounding his apartment on Roosevelt Island, subsidized by New York taxpayers, which is still in use by the family of his brother, Kobina Annan.
The apartment was where Mr. Annan and his wife lived before 1997, when he became secretary-general. The Roosevelt Island home is part of an estate of low-rent state-regulated housing. For years, the Annans saved considerable sums by occupying an apartment meant to help financially strapped low- to moderate-income New York families.

It is disgusting that wealthy people use every trick they can to save themselves some money. The bigger sin, though, is allowing the trick to be used. Why doesn't any official in NYC know about this? If they did know about this, then why all the fuss. If the NYC taxpayers are footing the bill, then they should have had a mechanism in place to monitor this type of stuff. If there is no monitoring situation, it is hard to hold anybody responsible for doing what is in their best interests - even if that means taking advantage. Labeling all 'liberals' with the same paintbrush as Annan, makes your initial arguement lame and silly. Look into Bernie Kerik's past, or Rudy Gulliani's and you will find advantages taken by them. Sir, everybody acts in their best interest, even if some of you feel it is only the 'yucky liberals'.

a damn shame that they're "just now finding out about this".

the bigger sin is expecting me to pay to subsidize anyone's housing, pay for your own damn housing the same as I do, and it will be cheaper for us all by the reduced tax load. where do you think the money comes from for the subsidy? Bet if everyone had to pay their own freight, there would be more kids encouraged to pay attention in school.

Mike W is wise. I'm not so sure NYC is getting it's moneys worth by having the United Nations on it's turf. Seems the good people of NYC are paying and paying, but not getting much in return.

The UN itself should be a federal crime. What benefit do we have with hosting that useless body of rabid America-haters on our soil?
It's bad enough that we already have one useless body of rabid America haters on our shores that we have elected ... but hopefully - they will drive the country so far off the shoulder of the road that the Right won't have to do much to get back in control. But that unelected nest of snakes (the UN) is an affront to all air-breathing life-forms.
We should have done with it and pull out of the UN, and seize/foreclose on their property in NYC if they can't or won't pay the back rent.

Seek,
I just plunked a symbolic gavel down after reading your comment. But I'm left wondering - Which is the worst 'crime' - that we allow this abomination to thrive on our soil and to fund it, or that the UN, itself, is worse. Kind of makes you wonder. Are we accessories by refusing to take a stand, and to what crime are we accessories. Whatever, it says a lot about us. Maybe we could do something symbolic like blowing up that black square rock in Mecca and justifying it by declaring we don't believe it's right to sacrifice so many sheep. The UN is next. Sheep be damned.
