Rangel On Draft: Too Bad He Isn't Serious
Yet, again, Charlie Rangel plans to put forward legislation on re-instituting the Draft.
We should have a two-year service commitment for a designated number of 18 year olds.
Some could play a role in support of our war fighting capability. But the majority could serve the nation well in a number of other ways, from the border, to airports and docks, etc.
But Rangel's just a fool playing politics, so I doubt anything will come of it. It isn't the first time.

The obvious ploy here is to damage the current gung-ho, highly motivated volunteer army and replace it with a surly, reluctant, low-morale non-volunteer army, plus finally get college kids off their non-liberal-enough butts and make them protest the war. Rangel wants to up the ante for use of our military to the point where the US won't act militarily unless the US mainland is attacked directly, and then only to drive the invader out and bar the door.
Dems and anti-war types are very dismayed at the lack of activism and war-protesting going on by our nation's youth, the lack of bad press and photo-ops of federal troops, state militias and cops oppressing these kids, marches on washington, sit-ins in the admin buildings, etc. etc. so they figure reinstating the draft will get them off their slacker asses and into the streets.
They are also hoping, I'm assuming, that a Dem president never has a need to use the US Armed Forces, because they would be just as hamstrung as a Republican. But people like Rangel and the nutroots feel like any use of US power is oppressive and wrong, so destroying the finely tuned machine that is our army would be a GOOD thing. And the draft would be a good start.
