Update: Of course Jennifer Loven of AP fame gives Kerry equal ground, they're just trading barbs.
You knew it was coming, courtesy of the San Francisco Chronicle, the newspaper of would be Speaker Pelosi's home town and crowd. Remember, these are the people who keep sending Nancy Pelosi back to the House year after year.
Q: Should Kerry apologize?
Amy Altschul, Oakland
Why should a person apologize for telling the truth? The truth is, for those who are not educated, the military is one of their only outlets. This does not mean the people are stupid, it means they are uneducated. Their lack of education often means the military, which currently means Iraq.Vernon Burton, San Leandro
For what? Telling the truth? If a few more so-called leaders started telling the truth about Iraq, maybe we could save some of those lives that are being thrown away for nothing.Miriam Rosenau, Berkeley
No way. Since when are you supposed to apologize for telling the truth?Richard Brinton, Salinas
It would be a step in the right direction if Kerry would apologize for being a spineless worm when it comes to confronting the bloody war-mongers in the White House. He actually doesn't have the heart or the will to challenge Bush on his war crimes and corruption.

Apologize for telling the truth? How about apologizing for being pompous a-holes?!?!?! I wouldn't p*ss on them if they were on fire, much less fight for them

Well, which is it - the truth or a botched joke? He claims he was trying to make a joke about Bush.
Hey Kerry, here is a joke (read and learn).
George Bush regarding Pelosi: "You know, the top Democratic leader in the House made an interesting statement recently. She said, we love tax cuts. Given her record, she must be a secret admirer."
(I laughed for days over that one...)
p.s. Kerry, apologize to our Troops!

Apologize ... and then leave the Senate Mr. Kerry! We don’t need professional politicians like you there.

Kerry says his statement was a botched joke against Bush. That can't be: Bush is educated. The four quoted comments in the post say nothing about Kerry's words being a joke against Bush. In truth, three underline that Kerry was, indeed, talking about the soldiers.

This idiot can't even spin the spin right.

Kerry is so smart and better educated that apparantly he can't even tell a "joke" without insulting the very people he wants to be Commander-in-Chief to. What a brilliant guy!

"That can't be: Bush is educated."
You have to remember: JFK is from an alternate universe where he's a genius and Bush is a moron. He's been surrounded by toadies who told him how brilliant and sophisticated and educated he was all through the 2004 elections.
Nevermind the fact that Bush got slightly better grades at Yale and slightly better standardized test scores. No matter how smart you think Bush is (or isn't), you must admit that Kerry's a little bit less smart.
Kerry was talking about not paying attention in school. Not necessarily dropping out. He could very well have meant that Bush was a lazy slacker who coasted through school, didn't learn the lessons of history, and as a result, made a stupid mistake in terms of Iraq.
I'm not saying I believe Kerry 100%, but I'm willing to believe it could have been a botched joke. There is nothing--not a shred of evidence--that it could not have been a botched joke. There is certainly reason to believe he might have meant it, or that it was a Freudian slip, but there's no incontrovertible proof. I don't think we will ever have proof, one way or the other.

I live in SF. Comments from the paper like that are so frequent. It figures comments like that would come from an area where everyone has gone to some distinguished school and see people who didn't go to Harvard, Yale, etc. as being common and not being intelligent. In all honesty, I'm sure those same people have never busted their butts for something. Oh well.

I read the part of the "joke" that was left out was the punchline, which was - "just ask Bush." Even if you add that line, it still does not mitigate the insult to the troops. It only points to Bush sending our troops to Iraq. Bush is not the one in Iraq, so the comment was clearly about the troops who are.
Now, the Republicans, they know how to pull off a good joke. Here is yet another example for the Dems, if they don't get it yet:
During the off-camera White House briefing, (Deputy Press Secretary Dana) Perino was asked where Snow was.
“Tony is at the seamstress getting his suit stuffed,” she said.
The remark alluded to Kerry’s written statement on Tuesday, which had said: “I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh ...”

Is the Commanders of the American Legion, the VFW, and the AMVETS all right wing nuts? They have all asked for Kerry to apologize to the troops. Kerry went before congress and slandered his comrades in Vietnam by saying that they were rapist and murderers, so whats new?

Pelosi is rich. Kerry is now that he married the widow of a Congressman who died in a strange plane crash(alot like that baseball). Jane Fonda arranged it and what is Kerry if not the war protester? Kennedy was rich too, but there was that other plane crash, not that Conn and Mass are at war or is that universities and not Congressmen?
Rich people sticking together. Not that they made the money themselves.....

LJH...
Huh?

kerry was the principal spokesman for vvaw. the vvaw hatched a plot in 1971 to assassinate politicians and senators who supported the vietnam war during the senators christmas break. kerry supposedly voted against it and shortly after dropped out of vvaw. vvaw and ivaw are now working against war in iraq. nice group of people still supported by the monied far left- not. perhaps ljh was reminded somehow of this.

Hmmm, the people quoted on the SF Chronicle link - I did a google search on them, namely because I recognized one of the names -
They appear to be regulars of the Chronicle and/or SFgate - more than once they have had their picture and/or letters to the editor/comments published.
Looks like the Chronicle and SFGate go to their bullpen regulars for their "informed comments"....who'da thunk it????/

kerry, get over yourself, you have a pattern of being critical towards the military, it was not a joke but your feelings coming out of the closet. l don't want to hear about the three months you spent in Nam, three months does not make you a veteran, it makes you a reject. The USA military has more class, honor, bravery and determination that you could ever have, so my advice to you is go home, sit by the fire and roast marshmallows dipped in heinz ketchup. Hey one more thing, you are stuck on stupid.
